Hanyu update/Olympic berth criteria

Nope, my English must be failing me because I can't imagine a scenario where they would exclude him. Even if he is injured, he will be chosen and the JSF will be visiting every shrine in Japan to pray for his health because he and Uno are the best chance Japan has for medals and they would be stupid to ruin it.

As for the selection criteria, it is just a selection criteria, nothing more. It's not like it is some sacred text that can not be altered or that changing something in it will cause the apocalypse. can we stop talking about this now? its only one person who keeps starting up this argument, its clear no one in the world else feels like yuzuru wont be selected as representative because he's NUMBER 1 in the world in figure skating. rabbit1234 please just drop it, you're making people stressed out for no reason. You're worried about figure skating being a fair competition? well guess what? It's not buddy, as much as everyone wishes it might be figure skating will never be 100% fair. Even so, what's less fair to you: letting the number one figure skater in the world go the olympics over an inconsistent skater who gets 7s and 8s for the components, or barring the number one figure skater in the world from the olympics because he was injured at the time of All Japan, which btw, is only one criteria of being chosen as a representative???

I don't see how sending Hanyu to Korea can be controversial as the current men's field of Japan is virtually not as much fierce as the situation in 2014. At that time, Takahashi, Kozuka, Oda, Machida, Hanyu, Mura and others were vying for Team Japan. Hanyu's position is not comparable with Plushenko and Kovtun in 2014 because Japan has THREE spots for the Olympics in 2018 and except Hanyu and Shoma, the Japanese men's field is not like the current Russian ladies (quality-wise..the latter's ho-hum though) My concern is about whom the Japan fed will send to Korea as the third man. Mura and Tanaka are all inconsistent and struggling with injuries while I wonder how Murakami is doing these days. I don't have a slightest idea about who will grab such an opportunity at Nationals.

Is there a deadline for the Olympics? For example I'm a 100% sure Yuzuru will be named for the Olympic Team whether he competes at Nationals or not. But if he (or Shoma, Mura, Tanaka... whoever) is injured and unable to compete come February, until which point can a substitute be named?

I don't know the official rules, but I know that when Michelle Kwan was put on the Oly team in 2006 after she couldn't skate at nationals due to injury, she was able to go to practices and pulled out with enough time for Emily Hughes to be her sub - and the games were already ongoing (IIRC). I assume that they have up until just a few days before the event to use their substitute(s). That's why a lot of countries bring their first alternates... or at least have them on speed dial. It's just a bummer they don't get to participate in the opening ceremonies if they wait that long.

Yes absolutely. And to be honest, even the 'third' japanese man is lucky to have Yuzuru and Shoma bringing the third spot. Because they just aren't good enough. If Yuzuru won't go, there are two skaters from Japan that can go who won't be able to crack the Top 10, imho. That is really the worst case scenario. And that makes it so diffferent to 2013 Nationals. Japanese men in general were much better.
