Ilia Malinin

Well he got you a medal for your wedding, perhaps not what was expected but I'm happy for Jun and Shoma too. Coming from where he was last year at Worlds, Ilia should still be happy. He needs to work on that choreography a bit more.

And congrats again for your special day. Too bad you had to get up so early! ;)

I was already awake at 6 am lol.

I think he has been underscored in both the worlds and world team event

The scoring for his short program wasn't too bad, but given how they judged other skaters they held him to a higher standard in the free program. Especially with how a couple other skaters were handed 10's for programs with major errors despite simpler content.

I hope next season will bring better scoring after a summer of conversations behind the closed doors.

The last time a female skater scored 10's she skated the most complex female content in history and executed everything perfectly. People found reason to criticise this despite there not being any way to actually improve the program it was perfect. Sure, maybe she could have done 5 quads but that's never been achieved cleanly.

Whereas at the team event we had skaters are scoring 10's for components skating relatively simple programs (one skater in particular doesn't even have a quad) with numerous errors.

Ilia comes out, makes some errors sure, but the skaters receiving perfect scores for some components had sloppy programs too.

I understand the argument that components are separate to jumps, but in reality it's never been like that only when they want to punish someone. There's always been a correlation between complexity and components.

One skater has a clear wrong edge on his lutz combo but three judges gave him 5's, mostly 4's. What is going on? Ilia's correct 4Lz executed perfectly receives mostly 3's a couple of 4's. I'm so confused by all of this. Ilia and his mother looked as confused as I am.

Congrats to Ilia. I wish he would have done a bit better in the FS. He needs to work on some things this summer but he is such a talent.

Looking forward to seeing Ilia and NC at SOI Chicago.

Congratulations to Ilia (and others!) for surviving this LONG stretch of Worlds, ice shows, and now WTT in Japan. That was quite a LONG trip to Japan for him.I am more interested in how he did over all than in scrutinizing every jump and every point...To go even further than that, I love what I saw OFF the ice with him. Starting with that crazy question in the Worlds SP Press Conference where someone asked him "How do you plan to beat Shoma Uno?" The look on his face was priceless, as if to say "Huh? What kind of question is that? This isn't sumo wrestling!". He quickly gained his composure though and gave a very thoughtful answer. He seemed to enjoy the extracurricular activities like playing baseball with the guys, doing the sauna thing, enjoying the food (eating w/ chopsticks; I'm so jealous), mingling.

IMHO this was a great way for him to close out the season. They all looked like they were a little tired by the time they got to WTT, but he survived like a champ. I'm hoping for a great off-season for him with work on his skating skills, and I'd love to see him work with different choreographers and get great programs. I'm not quite sure who would be a good choreographer for him. Maybe take a little break from lots and lots of quad training. I'm sure he's feeling he's an indestructible teenager, but staying injury free is really going to be key.

I agree Arriba. He showed a great improvement in the short at WTT so lots to look forward to. He said he was going to focus more on artistry because he knows he has to. Jun has emerged. Shoma is established and will only get more polished and strong if he continues past next season.
I watched the free program and was as surprised as Ilia seemed to be at his placement. Some of his well executed jumps were scored low, IMO. He's smart enough to get the message, if they're sending one. When his quads failed him and he blew the axel, he had some artistry to rely on but it wasn't enough today. He learned this at World's too. He's young enough and smart enough to continue on his athletic path and add the artistry.

Benoit is too much the other way at this point but maybe that type of choreography 3 years out from Milan might be worth exploring. I love David Wilson. Rohene, maybe? Raf and his parents, mostly his parents, have managed him well to this point. He's respectful and appropriately a teenager. It's so nice that the top guys seem to get along as friends but they keep their eyes on each other for the competition and adjust accordingly. WTT let Ilia know he's accepted and that's a lot since he is so unique.
I can't imagine the hype he'll be under in 2026 especially if his quads are still so numerous.
