Ilia Malinin

I hope that he tones down the SP a bit just for this competition so he'll have a higher chance of getting the SP mins. Don't want a repeat of Cup of Austria....

He got it. Skated his junior program and made the tech mins easily.

Been a fan of his since he first started on the JGP in the 2019-2020 season. Glad to see him go to Worlds.
Aw you beat me to it to report it! But yes! YAY! Now he can go crazy with the quads tomorrow! My county being represented at worlds for the first time since…Michael Weiss!

I hope he pulls off one of his "Instagram combos" to shake up pre-Worlds. It's the perfect time. International event with absolutely no pressure. He's already achieved what he came for.

I love this interview with Ilia:

It's going to be super fun watching him.

Edited for new Phil Hersh article on NBC Sports:

Out of curiosity, why does Ilia use his mother's last name rather than his father's?

From the Phil Hersh article:

"For the record: Malinin took his mother’s last name – in its traditional masculine form in Russian – because both parents were concerned Skorniyakov would be hard for people to pronounce, especially by Ilia’s school classmates."

Great interview. I find it fascinating that his parents coach different jumps for him. I guess it makes sense if each were better at the different jumps. And I can't wait to see his young sister Liza!

Good luck Ilia at Worlds - hope he has a fantastic debut!
