Jason Brown

First???? As in, *not* last? the apocalypse is coming early....

As Mrs P told me regarding Nats (where he drew last in the SP), it's usually the FS where he's ended up skating last. So there's still a chance we'll avoid the apocalypse. :)

I have to say, I've found this competition really frustrating. I guess most people attending are fans of specific skaters, so aside from a few blessed souls who do post info / clips of US men, there's been so little information.

Anywat, can't believe SP is tonight! Wondering if I should brave the early rounds or sleep in til 5:00 am....

I agree, so few fan cams, so few reports. Not that I read one word of Korean, but still....all under wraps:scratch2:

Bless all of you who awaken to watch (at least all of you in the US of A). SD was on at a semi decent East Coast time, but the rest:no:

Now you know how I feel at every other competition featuring Team Australia (particularly Boston Worlds where Brendan had the misfortune of being in the same practice group as Hanyu...)

True! I do think that people here who are attending a GP etc do at least try to provide info and updates on particular skaters when asked - I know I do, and others have as well. I think in this case, the audience seems to be smallish and probably mainly fans of Hanyu, Uno, Jin, Yan, Martinez, the Korean skaters, and Chan.

There will likely be better reports from Worlds.

Well another thing to keep in mind that the U.S. men did not arrive to the 4CC venue right away because they trained in the Olympic training rink in Chuncheon. Really the audience only had access to the U.S. men on day 2. And day 3 men's practice (in the practice rink in the basement) yesterday was during competition so there weren't going to be any reports.

Actually, we might see some reports today during the men's warmup.

Oh I didn't realize that - thanks for pointing it out. I guess warmups should start in about 40 minutes so yeah, maybe we'll hear something.

By the way, I was too lazy to get out of bed and log on to Ice network this morning to watch the ladies, so I watched the Chinese tv livestream (link in post 9 of the links thread) on my phone. It was awesome - very little buffering. That may not be the case tonight for the men though!

Here's hoping that Jason has a clean and beautiful skate tonight.

The Octupus? Pretty good when he's not waving his tentacles 😄 As Karne mentioned, the Kaz Sport stream was pretty good last night too.

I don't think so. It's zhangyu television. No pink octopus. Its a direct broadcast. It's the ISU stream I think and commentators were very circumspect - not like the Russian ones. According to whoever linked it, they're broadcasting the entire comp. I get the feeling men are super popular in Asia though, so i don't know if it will continue to work well.

Yep. When I got home from work and fixed an issue with my computer, though, I was able to pretend to be in Canada and use the ISU stream, which was practically flawless (unless I reloaded GS too many times).

Don't get me started on the idiocy of the ISU stream being blocked in Australia but not in Canada though.

Was surprised Jason did not do the quad since he said he would go for it and was sorry for the flub on the axel... Still in the top 10 and think he is planning the quad in the free. I have faith... His sights are long term... It ain't over till it's over folks! Nice to see Grant and Jason back to back .. both programs were beautiful but IMHO Jason has the edge.. ;)

The protocals make for fun reading:
* The judge from China gave him zero GOE for his camel spin (everyone one else gave him 2 and 3)
* The judge from NZE gave him the second highest PCS (even higher than PChan, only lower than Yuzu
* And the tech caller deemed his 3Z UR....but not the 3A he fell on.

I have faith in the long game also.

He hasn't practiced the quad in the SP, so I didn't expect it.

I thought it went all right, I'm just really sorry about the fall.

I have absolutely no comments about the PCS. I would, generally, quite a bit for what he got (I am looking at you judge number 9), but just, when PChiddy gets 8.75 on skating skills, it's time to just not comment. Overall I think it went well, and the FS to come!

Ms. Sung-Hee KOH is judge 9.

I guess you could look at it this way---Nathan had to do multiple quads to get the judges attention on PCS. Jason has gotten those scores in spite of his TES. He might have received higher PCS than Nathan had he skated clean. But yeah the PCS scoring was kind of wonky today.

What concerns me most is that Jason's jumping still looks much weaker than it did at SA - although it's a million times better than NHK. In general he's not getting anywhere near the height and distance he had earlier in the season. In part it looks like a lack of muscle - his legs seem much thinner. It also seems like he may not trust his jumping yet, at least on the 3a and 3z. Hopefully he'll be able to improve those things before Worlds. I really hope he will consider working with Frank for a week or so.

As to the PCS and some of the GOE: I can't even. The only upside is that if Nathan wins Worlds, Jason can come as low as 12 for three spots.

I don't know, I think for being only four-weeks from Nationals and considering his performance at Nationals, he's probably where he needs to be. I didn't have super high expectations for this competition.

The stress fracture is a reset of his season, so I don't think it's even realistic he would be at his Skate America shape right now.

Also the 3A mistake didn't seem like a confidence issue --he had fully rotated it and it barely interrupted the program -- just seem like the landing didn't stick. The lutz UR is a bit mysterious to me-- but that jump is being done with his stress fracture leg -- he had problems with that jump both times at nationals too...But oddly enough his 3F-3T looks great, which is also on the same leg.

Unfortunately, I always have high expectations for Jason! But you're right, of course, that it's only been a month since nationals, and that the stress fracture was not just a little blip on his season.

I do think that he's not really attacking his jumps yet, which is what I meant about trust. I think Johnny Weir mentioned in the Nats FS that he was timid picking in for lutz and flip due tothe injury, and I kinda see that here, as well as...not exactly a hesitation on the axel, but something close to it.

Anyway, it's possible he's pacing himself for the free skate, so we'll see.

For anyone who hasn't seen the 4CC SP yet, here it is:

A heartfelt performance from Jason, who always manages to draw me in, no matter what the jumps are. For me, he is a bit of a magician. He was so strong and solid on his jumps at Sk Amer that by comparison these do seem a little on the timid side. Hopefully he'll have some healing time before Worlds. What a warrior though -- always trying to give 120%. Hope he comes back super strong in the free!
