Javier Fernandez

A few things from recent days:

Javi's athlete profile page is available on the official Olympics website. It's quite long! But I'm sure the 70kg for weight is incorrect. I mean, just look at the size of the guy! He's tiny in every dimension! I think I saw 63kg a few years ago, and he actually looks skinnier these days.

I’m with DelRetiro in this. It’s clear that the data is not accurate in many cases but I think something near 70kg. could be real.
I remember reading an interview with Javi, maybe a two or three of years ago, where he said that he was doing his strength training on the ice, because they didn’t want to increase his muscle mass. But, for the last couple of years, he has been showing pictures of his weight training off the ice; I guess he needs to strength his muscles in order to protect his bone structure from the impact of the jumps (at 26 he’s aging, you know :palmf:) and that might be the reason for the increase in his weight, without gaining volume, and one of the causes for his issues with stamina in the FP.
I have a personal story about real vs perceived weight. A few years ago, I had a female gym coach who was the same height than me (1.60m). I was fit by then but nothing near her, she had a beautiful body, her legs, arms and core were rock solid without being bulky, she was a couple of sizes thinner than me and she weighted a couples of kilos more than me: my best guess was that she was around 50kg but her real weight was 60kg!

Woooooow there's a REALLY long accompanying article on Javi published by Spanish Eurosport in time with the documentary! And to top it off, artist Phil Galloway has created illustrations for the article!!! There is a La Mancha themed one with Javi as Don Quijote, and there is also a Star Wars one with Javi and Yuzu doing lightsabre fight :eeking:, and a third is a collection of sketches of Javi's Modern Times program! :luv17:

Well, the first time I saw Javi live at close range was the small medals in Stockholm 2015. And it really struck me only then how SMALL he is. In pictures and on tv he looks so much bigger than what he really is. The 173 cm height is roughly correct (with shoes on ;) ) - he has stood in front of me on level ground at an arm's length twice and we are about the same height (and I am 170 cm).

But no way can he weigh 70 kg - he is slender and slim and light like a bird... Hanyu's weight is in the PC files is 57 kg and he is about the same height as Javi, Alex Shibutani at 183 cm has weight info at 73 kg. Adam Rippon (170 cm) 66 kg, Aliev (178 cm) 64 kg. So, 70 kg with that midriff that almost of vanishes when he turns sideways, don't think so. Also Deniss Vasiljevs is really not 165 cm tall any more - he was just about taller than me already in Ostrava last year... But funny that Kolyada has his height at 176 because it is almost 10 cm less in reality.

Javi's profile info for ISU/PC also includes Najarro as his choreographer - as far as I know, he has had nothing to do with the current programs. Plus Daniel Peinado as his coach - Javi did work with him about two years ago or so whilst he was in Spain, but I have not seen Peinado in any of the pics etc from Spain (or elsewhere) since then really.

E

PS The mag cover is just horrible - I had to look twice to recognize him! If it is photoshopped, then the "improved" Javi is so much uglier than the real thing.

And PS 2: Olibritt - rink results is far superior to skating scores or the other free score databases for figure skating.

I'm so envious that you've seen Javi not just in person but so up close! The camera must really add kilos because Javi doesn't look that thin on TV, in interviews, or in photos. Slim yes, but quite muscular for a slim guy, and his legs are surprisingly thick. Well, not really a surprise, given how hard he trains. Next time you see Javi, ask him how much he weighs. Normally that question would be considered inappropriate, even rude, but just tell him that nobody on Golden Skate believes he weighs 70 kg. He might laugh at the question, or he might look at you like you have three heads. Not sure

I especially loved seeing Javi and David working together! So often these type of things focus on Javi training with Brian, and it was wonderful that David was featured so much this time. He has such a gigantic role in Javi's success, and rarely ever gets to share the limelight. :luv17:

Great that they shot so much in Toronto to give us a proper look into Javi's daily life there. And nice of Javi to allow the crew into his private sphere to shoot in his apartment even, talk about Jorge being his best friend and such. It makes the documentary that much more personal. But Effie looks rather overweight, doesn't she?

The Olympic Channel's profile on Javi is now part of their Figure skating stories to watch preview video. I guess they didn't get the memo about Javi's 6th title. :rolleye:

A new interview with Javi in La Vanguardia.

And finally a Eurosport interview found its way to youtube, with some really sweet Javi moments. When he responds SuperJavi to the superhero question and then bursts out laughing is adorable. Same for the fridge question. :rofl2: :luv17:

This article focuses on Yuzu (I borrowed it from his FF) but it says Javi will get to Korea on the 11th with Tracy and him :)

It’s a shame he won’t be at the opening ceremony (I would have loved to see him as the flag bearer again) but an extra week of training at home without the Olympic craze will be good. And I have read some staff caught a stomach flu virus so it’s safer for him that way too

I'm glad he's skipping the ceremony. Have you read about the extra cold temperatures there? Open ceiling stadium and -12 degrees celsius... just stay home and warm!

Thanks for posting the article on Brian - happy and relieved to get that bit of news! The (almost) complete radio silence over the past week has been (almost) too much to take

It's almost as if they're treating this like any other competition, right? Arrival on Sunday, practices during the week and then competition time at the end of the week... He is an old dog even when it comes to the Olympics (third time!) and maybe has no great need to get the whole experience anymore.

E

Totally agree in being glad Javi is skipping the opening ceremony. He's had that experience already, as well as the honor of being the flag bearer for his country. This time he can focus on the competition only. There's really no need to be exposed to that cold in an unheated open stadium, or spend a full extra week in Korea with limited training time compared to what he has at home in Toronto. Who knows? It may turn out to be an advantage for Javi over all the guys who have to do the team event.

I have understood from skating forums that being a flag bearer might bring bad luck in competition...

Good that he and Hanyu along with Tracy Wilson will be arriving later...

Definitely! It will be way too cold at the opening ceremony, it’s best to be overly precautious.

As eppen said, they are treating this as if it was just another competition. I think it will be very positive to reduce the jitters and thinking ‘omg it’s the Olympics’ and be affected by the pressure.

I had the pleasure of skating 'with' Javier yesterday at the Toronto Cricket Club.

I'm an adult skater, skating at one of their adult sessions, which he used to practise. Tracy Wilson asked me if it was okay for Javier to share the ice with me. Hell yeah!

We cleared the ice to be treated to a program of his. I believe I witnessed a quad in real life. Hard for me to tell difference between triple and quad.

Hanyu is nowhere near as tall. He is quite short.

Well that sounds pretty cool :eeking:

Lucky you!!

:luv17: How cool to hear that! They're really using every moment of preparation before going to Korea in the weekend, I guess... But am happy to see also that all's well - getting a little jittery before the Games...

I think that Hanyu is about Javi's height based on photos - here's one from ACI last fall when they're standing on the ice next to each other more or less straight (Hanyu could be a cm or two taller even these days...).

A little making of video from the El Pais Magazine Icon photoshoot to make this Friday a bit better after the rather dismal team event men's SP last night (from the European perspective). And here's the interview plus some of the photos.

I hope Brian has a strategy of some sort to deal with the rather early competitions (although Javi will be on ice in the later groups).

I think I read sometime this season that Brian was preparing his skaters to get used to compete in the morning. Though you are right Javi will probably compete around midday?
