I hate to say this at the expense of other skaters, but given the CoR disaster, what would it take for Junhwan to make GPF?

Messing off the podium and Samarin third or lower at IdF, I believe. Junhwan is looking good :) I think he will definitely be first alternate at least

Or a WD. If he doesn’t make the cut and Samarin is third or lower at IdF, he’d be first alternate, yes?

Messing got 13 points at SC. So even 4th place (9 pts) is enough to overcome Jun, I'm afraid (they would both have 22 pts, but silver puts higher than bronze).
So, Messing in 5th or lower, and at IdF: Samarin 3rd or lower, Jin and Aliev 2nd or lower - and GPF for Jun...
So, wishing all the skaters the best, still hope Jun can make it to the final.

I think Jun's chances of going to GPF are suddenly not bad... Here is the current qualification standings.

At this point, to qualify above Jun a skater needs to have gotten 7 points from their first event (5th place) and win their second event, but the two skaters w/ 7 points are Dmitri Aliev and Boyang Jin, their next assignment is GP France, and GP France has Nathan Chen. I'm counting them out.

With 9 points right now are Mikhail Kolyada and Alexander Samarin. I don't think Kolyada will make a miraculous comeback at Rostelecom, and I don't think Samarin will podium at GP France.

With 13 points is Keegan Messing. If he gets 5th or lower in Rostelecom, he's out. But 4th place could push Jun out.

Yuzuru and Nathan have both won their first GP, if they also win their second (not unlikely) and Keegan places 5th (not that unlikely), then Jun will (probably) qualify.

* Note that it could get more complicated with all the tiebreakers, which I don't entirely understand.

So in this fingers crossed scenario, the GPF would be Shoma, Yuzuru, Nathan (30 points each), Brezina (26 points), Voronov (24 points), and Jun squeaking in with 22 points.

Actually I wouldn't count Samarin out. If we assume Nathan wins, then Alexander's main competition will be: Aliev, Brown, Jin (although it's men so several others could factor in like Nadeau, Aymoz, Sahomin, etc.). In terms of SB, it goes Aliev (250.55), Samarin (248.78), Brown (234.97), Aymoz (230.09), Nadeau (227.76), Jin (227.28).

If Jin and Aliev skate well they'll both be ahead, and Samarin needs 2nd to pass Jun anyways. I'd count on Jin more than Aliev (who had 219 at NHK), but it's still a bit open there. I'd predict Alexander won't get silver, but I would not be that surprised if he did.

I'd rather see Jun make it than Samarin, but we have to wait and see.

I have given up on predicting the men a long time ago. I am just going to be proud of what Junhwan achieved in his first senior GPs, and if it happens that he goes to finals I am going to get out the booze.

I'm not getting out the booze yet, but my hands are inching closer to the beer fridge. If it does happen then what a feat, to go to finals at your first senior GP circuit, and as the first man from Korea to do it... But I'm getting ahead of myself.

I don't want to wish another skater bad, but since Junhwan's ticket is decided at France... Well, we will know when we will know. Not getting the booze out just yet.

I'm wishing all the best to Nathan Chen and Jin Boyang... because if they deal out the Gold and Silver amongst themselves, as they definitely have the potential to do, Jun might just be at the Final. And girl, would I love to see that! And who knows, maybe we'll get a surprise winner or at least surprise podium? There are few skaters at IdF I'm really into, but I think I'll just have to keep a close look at that competition!
