Nobody in his (or her) right mind would ever question Yuna's win in Vancouver. But many people questioned the points gap between 1 and 2. Was she better than Mao there? Yes, but not so much better. Yuna had about 10% (!) more points than Mao. When you transfer this to the old 6.0 scoring system, this would be like Yuna getting 6.0's and Mao getting 5.4's. Even the most hardcore Yuna fan must think that this is ridiculous.

I really hope to see Mao next season, and I want another dark and over-dramatic Tarasova program for her. :biggrin:

I really loved Tarasova's last two programs for her - Swan Lake & Rach 2. I do hope to see more brilliant programs like those.
 
I am so, so, so, so happy to think that Mao might be returning to competition!!!
I barely watched figure skating last season, except for Worlds.
If Mao comes back, I will to go to Boston next year! :dance:

And I am looking forward to the 3-axel showdown between Mao and Liza!
Let's see who's got the better axel. Figure skating boards will go wild measuring the entry speed, height, width of the jumps of these girls!

If Mao comes back, what kind of programs would you like her to skate to and who would you like her choreographers to be? I said this on another forum, but I would really like her to skate to Tchaikovsky's 1st piano concerto and "Dream A Little Dream of Me" Mama Cass's version from 1968 as an exhibition. I really love Tarasova's programs and many of Lori Nichol's as well. They are great at bringing out the dark and dramatic and the ethereal and joyous sides to her skating. But, do you think there are any other choreographers who would be good for Mao? Do you think she will choose somebody else? With all this anticipation, it will be a real let down now if she announces retirement.

I think that if Mao comes back, she might have Miyamoto Kenji choreographing some of her programs, or at least I hope so. He choreographed
Mao's (sort of) pair program with Dai last Chritmas, and it seems like she feels comfortable with him. He was even part of the Team Japan trip to Okinawa.

The Christmas program was floaty and fluid and totally within Mao's comfort zone, but one thing I noticed was that she employed very feminine facial expressions---she looked angelic and beautiful---while she skated to it, and I felt that this might have been due to Miyamoto Kenji's influence.

I'd love for Mao to do a hot, passionate tango piece. I know Mao's already done tango quite well, thank you very much, but Por una Cabeza was more fresh and virginial than hot, and Schnittke was, due to the circumstance that she was skating under, an expression of her pain (<- this is the one and only program of Mao's that I do not like). So, now that Mao is clearly a full-fledged woman, I'd love to see her channel a bit of Akiko, and do something that is womanly and passionate.

But maybe, tango might be too much the first season out? I really don't want Mao to injure herself (<-ha, ha! I am already worrying about her getting injured), so I wouldn't want anything that requires too much jerky upper body movements. I don't think her body's made for that.

I know Mao has been taking jazz lessons during her year off, so something jazzy and up beat would be enjoyable. I thought Mao's I Got Rhythm totally showcased her superior musicality (---just watch her performance, and then watch Mirai's and Kira Korpi's) and her joyfulness.

However, something that requires her to carve out broader, bigger edges is definitely something that I would love to see. But then, I wouldn't want a performance that is all about broadness and bigness. That in itself would be kind of be boring. Just some judicious amounts of broad edges.

Oh, dear. I actually don't care what Mao performs to. I'm sure I'll love it no matter what.
 
IMHO the rule that hurt Mao the most was the age rule that kept her out of the 2006 Olympics. That season she beat the whole Olympic podium, Arakawa, Cohen, and Slutskaya, at least once.

As for the current rules and next season, I think that Mao's best chance to wrack up points on the competition is in the short program. With a triple Axel against an (otherwise required) double Axel, that's an extra five points right there. Evan a difficult triple-triple can't entirely make up the difference. For instance, at 2014 Worlds Mao did 3A, 3F and 3Lo+2Lo for 20.7 base value points before bonus, while 3Lz+3T, 3F and 2A is only 18.7. If Mao did a triple-triple in addition to the 3A, that would seal the deal, but it is not really necessary and some of the difference can be made up in GOE, and with less risk. In fact, at 2014 Worlds 13 skaters each did a triple-triple, but Mao easily outpointed all of them, even without GOE.

Even Tuktamysheva's layout of 3A, 3Lz and 3T+3T is only a little more, at 22.7.

In the long program anything can happen.

I want Mao to try new choreographers too! Lori and Tatiana have been good but I wanna see what other choreographers can do for her (mainly new step/ choreo sequences :-D )
 
This thread is not about Sochi, not about Yu Na Km, and still less about Vancouver. It is about Mao's press conference, and her training and future plans in general. Please do not highjack the thread to rant and bicker about old competitions.
 
It would be a dream to have Akiko Suzuki choreograph for Mao's long. A dream.

And perhaps Buttle for the short.

I hope Mao spins a lot faster when she returns to competition.
 
Ideally I would want last season's formula for Mao in terms of music. Chopin was great, and she really does seem to thrive on soothing classical pieces that are lyrical and with depth. That's Mao. I Got Rhythm was fine but it was a little too cabaret for me. If she chooses a beautiful piece of lyrical music for the short program then it not only eases her into something familiar, it will also underline her artistry and musicality against the rest of the field (specifically Tuk, Radionova, Pogo, Hongo, Gold and the rest) who aren't as attuned.

For her free program- she can skate to something with a little more bombast. Something a little less stoic than Rach 2 but nothing too warhorse-y or overtly 'balletic' like Swan Lake. She likes her step sequences and the breathing room for jumps means she can put in polished transitions. I'm all for trying out new choreographers, but let me tell you one thing- Carolina and Kim gets it right all the time. If a formula works, work with it till you can't anymore. In a way Mao, Kim and Carolina have the same tastes (to a degree). They all skate to familiar music, even overrused sometimes, but they make it work and they always have two contrasting programs. Hell, if she can't beat the Russians in the jumping side, she can at least remind the world of her finesse and polish.

SP options: I am LOVING Schumann's Traumerai at the moment. Both piano by Lang Lang and violin by Joshua Bell. I think Mao would skate amazingly well to that piece or anything similar. Even Liszt's Consolation no.3, or Air on G String (but in that BEAUTIFUL piano arrangement that was used in an episode of The Good Wife. Marek Lutonsky has a version of it on Youtube)

FP: I am stumped, but something that swells in the middle for a beautiful, albeit short, spiral and jump. OMG a beautiful arrangement of La Traviata that ends with that swell at Chi Fai?...Nulla, with Mao in a layback ina bauer would KILL ME here from 1:29.


At the end of the day, if Mao can tug at heartstrings, that's all I want to see. Figure skating is a sport yes, but I watch it for the beauty.

I liked "I Got Rythm" because it showed her versatility as a performer. But she's best when she does classic pieces.
While I like Schumann's Traumerei, there's not much going on there (no real highs and lows), this would be really difficult to skate to imho.

I would love to see her skating to Schubert (not Ave Maria ;)) something like Standchen (Serenade) without lyrics, piano and cello, something like that. This is difficult, but I think she could pull it off.

I agree. I think TT usually gives her music that is too heavy for her, and I don't like much of Lori's choreography.

I would love to see Mao doing something dark, evil, sensual, and unsettling.

The Rite of Spring will make an epic LP!
