Maria Sotskova

Knowing Maria, I thought Berezhnaya/Sikharulidze Swan Lake in a non Swan Lake costume would be perfect for her and please no Black Swan. Well, close enough  We will see how she keeps up with the pace

LP Moonlight by Claude Debussy
Souce: interview above

Well I don't think this one would help her with the audience perception of her being boring (not us of course) but we shall see? I get bored myself with Moonlight, beautiful but boring.

Sorry for the numerous posts but just needed to add Tarasova comentary. Apparently Maria has mastered the tano on all jumps and most of her jumps in the 2nd half which I'm assuming she means the LP. Maria did put out an interview in March saying all the jumps in the SP should be in the 2nd half.

Figure Sotskova looks very convincing in technical terms - Tarasova.

The skating of Russian figure skater Maria Sotskova before the new season looks convincingly from a technical point of view, the Honored Coach of Russia Tatyana Tarasova told R-Sport agency.

"I liked (in training) Masha Sotskova, who learned a lot, she mastered all the jumps with her hands, jumping elements in her are mostly in the second part of the program, technically she looks very convincing," Tarasova said by phone.

First time I write here and I decided to do so because of your comment that the audience has the perception that Maria is boring and Moonlight will not help that .
I absolutely LOVED Maria this season. I didn't really like her at juniors but when she got to Buyanova and turned senior , she got matured a lot and the deep emotions through this beautiful extensions she has are mesmerizing. She has that inner peace while she skates that I feel like I get connected to her , to her energy , her passion and love for what she is doing , what she is becoming. Maria for me expresses what has made me a great fan of FS through the years ( Lipnitskaya was and is my first love ) . . . Through skating you can see life as it is. Ups and downs , different people , different personalities ,retirements, patience , power ... everything . That's why hate shouldn't have existence in this forum.
I believe in Maria and good for her she insists in what she wants. Those who understand will love her. It doesn't matter if she medals for me. I just want to watch her skate no matter what. And nowadays , indeed technical content counts more than the artistry. As far as skaters like Maria exist , you know that the heart of FS is still beating and even if sport is taking a more gymnastic perception as our society ,too, is getting more technocratic , there always be these athletes who will fight for what now is not favourable of being competitive in the sport .
Sorry for the big text. I couldn't keep emotions and words.

Always nice to hear from a Maria fan especially someone who liked her more after she moved to Buyanova ;)

About her being boring, people have already started complaining and it's just annoys me is all, no biggie  She can skate to whatever she wants to.

My main concern right now is the tanos and backloading  She did struggle with underrotations last season especially in the 2nd half of her LP.

Realistically , if she doesn't back load , her chances for the team may not be that realistic because indeed underrotations were a problem for her. Although I don't understand all this hype with tanos. Is it a way for secure and "easier" GOE ? Backloading will help with her chances for Oly because higher BV. can't wait for test skates 😍😍

It will only help if she doesn't underrotate them. I want her to do a Senior B so she can try out the new layout and features as she has tough GP and can easily find herself way down if she doesn't nail those jumps. Don't get all the tano love either but it supposed to help increase GOE. It works for Medvedeva  I rather more people do Rippons since the arm position is usually much nicer. Or nice transitions like Jason Brown who gets lots of GOE love for what he does!

And 5 more weeks until test skates! Wonder if we will get a sneak peak video/interview like we did last year from Sharov? Hope so.

While I'm not a die hard Maria fan, I definitely wouldn't say she's boring. I wasn't super into her programs this past season, but I think the song choice for her LP this season is a great decision. The audience will be able to connect with is a bit more than the lesser known songs she skated to last season.

Maria Sotskova: "I do my favorite thing and I enjoy it" google translated

Reutov skater Maria Sotskova after a successful first season in adult skating is intensively preparing for the upcoming Olympic season. The athlete told our reporter about hours of training, the differences between youth sports from the adult and upcoming plans.

Maria, tell us about the preparations for the Olympic season.

- Preparation is going on actively. Literally a month ago I returned from Italy from the fees. We lived in the highlands, so it was hard to breathe - the load increased. Work is in full swing. This is due to the fact that soon the program will start showing.

How did you spend your time at the training camp?

- The whole days of training, there were so many of them that in the evening I went back to my room and immediately went to bed. We go to the small town of Courmayeur in the mountains for the second year, so I already know everything there. On weekends I went for walks and tried to discover something new for myself. It's nice to walk and have a good day off.

How often do you train now?

- I work every day, I have a day off only on Sunday. I arrive at the rink at ten in the morning and return home at eight in the evening. I have an hour and a half break, but mostly the whole day is loaded.

What are your plans for the future?

- A month later in Sochi will pass control rentals, where we will show our Olympic programs. The Federation of figure skating will evaluate them, look at the content elements, the rotation and the program itself. After this, there will be international rating competitions, and then the Grand Prix stages will begin.

Masha, you are now performing at an adult level. Are there any differences?

- At first I thought that there was no difference, but after my first season I felt it - at the adult level everything is serious. Maybe because I grew up and began to perceive it differently. Of course, junior sport is different from an adult. There comes a realization of what you are doing and why you are doing it.

The level of responsibility became higher?

- Of course, the very fact that you are at an adult level and ahead of the Olympic season. The most important thing is not to load yourself with this head, but simply work and do your favorite thing.

How do you cope with the experiences?

- I already knew that I love figure skating. I like to ride and compete in competitions. Thoughts about the fact that I have to show the maximum that the judges, the spectators, are looking at me, this all needs to be discarded. Go out to the skating rink, do your thing and get pleasure from it. Excitement in any case will be, but already less and pleasant.

Did you manage to relax a little with such a busy training schedule?

- Usually I only have a week of respite, but this year the coach has specially given the opportunity to rest more, because there is a responsible, serious season - you need to approach him in full readiness. I had two weeks, I went with my mother and girlfriend to Turkey. We had a great time, had a rest in body and soul. Remained very pleasant, warm memories. I charged positive for the season and now - again in the fight.

Thanks RemyRose!!!!

I don't doubt for one second that Masha is working her butt off in preparation for her first and maybe only chance at going to the Olympics. I can't wait to see her programs once she's put the final touches on the details. As always...her mental game seems to be in the right place.

:otopic: I wonder if there is a way to improve google translator. Like it usualy does pretty good job, but still makes some stupid mistakes over and over again. For example it likes to translate "сборы" as "fee", when proper translation in this case should be "camp", "training camp" or "gathering". I tried to propose a different translation, but my opinion seems irrelevent to her.

Snippets pertaining to Maria from Buyanova's interview Vaytsekhovskaya's interview with Buyanova `Sotnikova and I had to stop deceiving ourselves'

About accepting Rad as a student:
EV: You had no doubt that Maria Sotskova, who had been working with you for a year by then might react as well? That, so to say, she might take it badly and go look for a more comfortable team?
EB: I doubt we currently have athletes who can set the rules for the coaches. At least I don't really understand such a position. Obviously Sotskova was in a kind of a discomfort, especially as after the Europeans there were talks about her being switched with Radionova. It was voiced out all the time. But I think if anything it made Maria stronger and I see nothing wrong with that. After all Javier Fernandez and Yudzuru Hanyu train together, does it make them any less good? Take Etheri Tutberidze: she has Zagitova who practically grew up under Medvedeva, who, in her turn, was skating under Lipnitskaya.
You asked about Sotskova - it's not a fact she is uncomfortable with Radionova. Elena not only stepped into a complicated situation, but into the hardest possible, knowing no one will give full attention to her only. If I have to compare those 2 athletes, it's harder for Lena, because she more or less missed the year, she has to catch up and that's a lot of work. When the athlete is still a kid and only starts winning it's just work, work, work. I.e. the first toeloop, the first axel, the first lurtz, then the combos - things that are common for everyone. Yet here we are in a stage when we can decorate the programmes. Like the christmas tree.

EV: Speaking of the Olympics: you can't not see no matter how hard will Sotskova and Radionova work the current competition in the ladies is such that they both might not make it to the team.
EB: It's something every coach should be ready for. I just want my athletes not to miss the opportunities they have. This is what we work for - not missing them. A year ago many were doubting Sotskova would make it to the GPF - I saw the doubt in the eyes. But Maria said herself when we were submitting the plans `I'll make it!'. When she started working I was in awe of her determination. And immediately believed that girl will make it. Then there was the Russian nationals towards which Maria was working like crazy.

EV: And then she just didn't have any more power left?
EB: I'd say she slightly `exhaled' when she made it to the team. But there were objective moments. During the winter Maria was seriously ill for 2 weeks and, of course, the thought she might be replaced was pressing on her. While her basic technique is really good she has to work much harder than the other skaters because she is tall.

I like it!! It's gonna fly right over a lot of people's heads who don't have the patience for such a quiet and easy going choreography. It makes me feel calm and is really just a lot of soft movements but flows with the music. She's fighting for those jumps which I think will improve as the season goes.
