Why would Evgenia compete for Armenia? what madness is that .She need RusFed and RusFed needs her.
it seems silly, since there is nobody of importance in this season 2018/2019, Panekova debuts, which is practically a second Sostskova, so forgettable ... Zagitova doesn't have the strong mentality of Evgenia, and even being in her best moment didn't surpass Zhenya's world record, she is also in her puberty. I really don't think that Zagi can stand the cries of Eteri anymore, the pressure of being Sambo's new favorite, so it's possible that she changes coaches or collapses and retires. I will not crown any junior, because they are a big question mark. I only have faith in Kostornaya who is naturally small and has artistic potential.


It will be a more or less quiet season for Zhenya. She's still the nº1 russian lady in the ISU international ranking and the ONLY consistent senior woman that Russia has had since Irina Slutskaya.
 
Fournier-Beaudry & Sorensen were voluntarily released by their Federation.

It could have been much harder for them to win a release.

Here's the question. Has a World medalist ever been released from the federation he or she competed for? I don't know why anyone thinks Medvedeva would need a release or that she is the type of athlete that would care to compete if she no longer viewed herself as capable of being competitive for a World medal. Or why anyone would leap to the opinion that she isn't fully supported by her Federation.

But--setting aside the complete lack of necessity for such a move at this time--has a World medalist ever been released from his or her federation?

Edit: I thought of one. Mervin Tran. How long did it take him to go from competing for Japan to competing for the U.S.?
 
So, a lot depends on what is thinking the Russian Fed and what is Evgenia's plan.

If Evgenia want to skate until 2022, changing country is not an option, assuming that her Fed will release her.

mmm... what to do... what to do...

She can't lose this season, anyway, and the problem is the next.

Oh well...

I agree with this completely. Zagitova does not have the same mental toughness to deal with Eteri long term but I’m hoping Daniil may help protect her somewhat. I’m not sure she’ll make it to the next Olympics but hope I’m wrong. My bets are also on kostornya to end up the most successful junior since she has the full package. And I’m not sure that the type of training they do will allow all the juniors to land the tougher jumps over time. Their competition with one another may end up leading to over training and injuries. So I wouldn’t count zhenya out yet for the olympics in 2022. She may not be competing against 3-4 of Eteri’s current juniors.There is so much that can happen in that time. And no telling if those juniors will be consistent, especially with Olympic pressure.

We are just thinking about all the possibilities. Changing country is a way for be out of the Russian bloodbath. Just see Kostner's career. Without anyone on Italy with the potential for take her spot away, during the years, she still skate now, has take medals, and still have great PCS support, even without the influence of bigger countries.
 
I think she'd consider representing another country only after failing to make a Russian world team. It doesn't make sense to sit out if she's still in peak form and competing for big titles. If her consistency drops but she feels that she has a chance to put it all together and win a big event, then it could make sense to represent another country where she doesn't have to be strong for an entire season.

Zagitova doesnt have same thoughtless, but Medvedeva is not invincible anymore either.
And for 2022, russia already has a promising lineaup. I think for the next season, Medvedeva is safe indeed, whatever she does.
But after that...
 
If Medvedeva was to switch countries, how would that affect her marketability and post-competitive options especially inside Russia, where presumably she would be post-competitive career?

Switching to Armenia would be an absolutely idiotic decision.

Let's review: Armenia would have no funding, she'd have to sit out a year of competition (likely more because I doubt the RuFed would let her go just like that), she'd lose all her political backing and become a little country skater with all of the disadvantages that brings, oh, and no Olympics for her unless she gets citizenship as well, and in many countries that takes longer than four years.

I also don't think she will be able to keep all those Russian endorsements while skating for Armenia. So another lost.
 
Well, she's already 2-3 months into that 2-year wait so it might not be impossible. Maybe she doesn't want to be under control of the RusFed anymore. Actually was she even representing the RusFed at the Olympics? Maybe the clock actually started ticking after her last Grand Prix assignment.
 
There's no need to be harsh. Only her can understand what she really want from her future and the better compromise to make.

Now we are just assuming things.

He competed for Canada in between. In each case he was released (by Japan for Canada and by Canada for the USA) so that he only had to sit out the mandatory year.

She did compete at Euros this year.
 
Generally skaters change countries because for whatever reason they're dead-ending in their current situation. That is nowhere near the case for Evgenia, so why on earth should she not go on representing Russia?
