Medvedeva leaving Eteri

I think it’s official that Evgenia has left Eteri. As for where she is officially moving - supposedly she will make an announcement soon.

If she's moving to Orser, I think she's banking on outlasting the Trusovas, Kostornaias, Scherbakovas, etc. of this world. As soon as they burst onto the senior scene she's bound to fall behind them in TES, and there's virtually no room for her PCS advantage to grow no matter how much she improves performance-wise (or at least that's what I assume now, but who knows how the new rules will impact these scores), but the question is, how many of them will still be competing/landing quads in 2022? And will whatever 15-year-old Eteri takes to the Olympics then have the same untouchable tech content, or will she merely be landing 3-3s? So much can happen in 4 years that I think it's worth it to invest in a long-term strategy based on the likelihood that the Russian ladies' field will look different by then.

The problem with this plan, in my view, is that she'll have to at least keep making the national team in the intervening years so she may stay on the judges' radar and reinvent her image in the spotlight. Next year she should be okay, and may even contend for the gold at Euros/Worlds, but after that Russian Nationals will become a bloodbath and she may find herself fighting to make the top 5, especially if she no longer has the political support of Eteri/the federation.

Not sure how she plans to address this. I've read several comments to the tune of, she can take it easy next season and go back to basics with Orser, but I'm afraid she may have to beat Zagitova internationally just so she may stay relevant domestically the following season and get international assignments.

It amazes me the different opinions on this website. First, we need to find out if Evgenia is leaving Eteri. Second, where is she going to be coached. I think all those "Evgenia haters" I agree her technique is not perfect but at least she survived puberty it appears and has a certain presence and decent jumps. Alina has yet to prove she has or can survive puberty and that she will improve artistically. And the great hope Trusova is a major question mark. I am not sure she will make it to January 2019! I mean she is built like a little boy right now; but I am not sure if she gets even minor curves whether she can rotate let alone land any quad let alone two. I do find it sad in some ways that Brian Orser seems to have trouble developing Canadians into world threats. He doesn't fully have control over Gabby. I say itis a bit ironic because he was part of a string of men who were Oly silver medallists from Canada. It would be a nice ending to seem him coach the Canadian man or even woman who wins oly gold. I really hope Evgenia does even better where she goes but if it isn't Brian I fear she will regress. And here we thought Russia was so powerful; Japan is looking better every day. it is wishful thinking but what about Evgenia skating for Canada? She could take the third Canadian spot. Sorry Larkyn but she seemed to be a bit of a lark this year.

My bet - she'll move to Orser eventually and change her nationality, she can represent Armenia (or what is her origin), I guess. The only way she has the chance to be in the next Olys and have a long career.
I'd really like to see her skate with Brian and Lori. I'm sure she can turn into a diamond.
Have you seen the Nationals and Junioirs in Russia? In 2020 there'll be a blood battle with quads, 3As and majesty in terms of skating skills. Apart from Eteri's students there are SO MANY girls with trained by other coaches.

I think it is a risky move. Maybe Evgenia thinks she has nothing to lose at this moment, or had she won gold, she would have retired. Then leaving Eteri's is more understandable. Staying with Eteri she will probably win world title, or at least world podium again (I see Alina more vulnerable or more likely to have trouble with her jumps in the next year or two than Evgenia). Another world or GPF title still mean something to me, but probably not for Evegnia anymore. I just don't want to see her off podium and end her career that way.

I do think she is an artistic skater, and she emotes well. But again, Evgenia already gets high marks in components. Different programs may get more praise, but not going to give her more points.

Her skating will decline/stagnate if she remains with Eteri, and the juniors will just overcome her in the points game. Consistency won't save her then, just as it didn't save her this season.

Her future with Eteri is already written, so she might as well gamble and roll the dice. Med has all the medals except for the OGM. She will not get the OGM if she stays with Eteri. Furthermore, she might also be motivated to become a more "complete" skater and grow artistically, which she also won't get if she stays with Eteri.

The move is shocking in terms of her long relationship with Eteri, but not shocking if you look at the reasoning and motives. Judging by Oleg Vasiliev's statement, actual figures in the skating world were expecting this move for a while.

I actually think Med is innately a very artistic skater. She caught my eye at 2015 Nationals. Among the Radianovas, Lips, and Tukts, her skating stood out for its special "it" factor, the same "it" factor that you see with Kostornaia now. I still remember after 2015 Nationals how everyone around here was raving about her artistry. She never fulfilled her artistic potential because she got saddled with those terrible mime programs. Hopefully artistry is something she's able to explore more fully with her new coach, because she does have it.

There are 2 things people seem to forget when it comes to Evgenia:

1) She has said something along the lines of wanting a quad.
2) She seems to be the type to independently assess her scores and consider whether or not they are absolutely right, and where there is room to grow

For point 1:
-Mirai's 3A has shown it is possible for an older skater to learn new jumps. And while Evengia does not have the best axel in the business, she has pretty good salchows and loops. Then there is that lutz that must be fixed if she wants to avoid being caught.
- It is possible she looked at the landscape in Sambo and decided that learning new jumps at her age is not a club priority, or the learning process doesn't work well for her (rote practice only works up to a point). Hence, for this alone she might want to leave.

For point 2:
- If she independently assesses her scores and think that with politics, and the new system, there is a chance her scores would go down, then she is far from "maxed out." Her issue then isn't just adding more points, but keeping her points stable and high as right now.
- With her injury, and so many new skaters coming out of Russian Junior ladies, it's highly likely she might be politicked against in her own fed at some point. So she needs to ensure her skating cannot be denied high scores. Sambo does not have a good track record of it (if it even exists yet) for older skaters versus the new skaters. Hence why she might change-to round out her skating to insure against potential score deflations.

As for politics- it goes both ways. Sure Eteri helps with the politicking, but let's not forget Med's winning streaks also helped Eteri's political clout. I would expect to see some political deflation going on when Med switches coaches. She might skate for Sambo70, but the political clout should she still be super successful, goes to her new coach and not Eteri.

Lori... no. Shae Lynn Bourne... yes.

I actually think Med is innately a very artistic skater.

She has never been polished well. I know people will fight me on this, but she hasn't. She does have some nice qualities in her, the "it" you're mentioning is likely the ability to milk and breathe in a few notes. It is telling to me that I consider this: https://youtu.be/jvg-JA623G0?t=3m58s

To be the best moment she has ever created. Particularly after she exits her skid-spiral to the note. She likes to perform. Unfortunately, she can't, because she's being made to do a hundred transitions.

I'm not sure if she is innately artistic, because I can't be with the stuff she's been made to do. But I can tell she likes to skate.

I'm 90% sure the BOrser rumour is true. But hey, if it turns out BOrser is neither taking on her nor Boyang/Wakaba it would be the ultimate troll move :laugh2:

Where did the Wakaba rumor to TCC come from? Who started it?

Massimiliano Ambesi (the ITA ESP commentator) I think. He's not 100% right or anything, but he does have some inside info on TCC and usually Eteri group.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'm more shocked Evgenia's move came out of the blue (with barely a whisper from the usual FS insiders) than the move itself.

It will be ironic if the skater that Orser accepts is Med not Wakaba and Boyang. :roll9: So the skaters whom we expect to move to TCC permanently aren't there. But the one we do not expect will be there. :hpull:

Med, Wakaba, Boyang and Yuzu. What a group

Okay but imagine Orser at Russian Nationals... although they are usually at the same time as Japanese Nationals, so who knows

Wow! I never would have seen this one coming! Figure Skating is a real life soap opera!

But I wonder if the change in coach will mean a different type of program for Med, will the miming be a thing a past?!
