Michelle - Good News/Bad News

Everybody is spectulating if Michelle is really injured or if she is faking it. This is a scenario, what if Michelle is not really injured but is waiting for all the skaters to skate their programs, see what they are doing in their programs and that way she will know what she has to do before she starts doing her programs. That way if the other skaters are not doing triple-triples, she won't bother to do them.

As blunt as this may sound, REGARDLESS of whether MK is injured or not, it's her loss- it really is. Experience that she could have gotten, she didn't. That's the bottom line.

Really, Kwan is so evil talking about any action from her can bring out the worst of evil thought from human being. (imo, that's what they think they would do in the situation)

RD, I thought by now 'non fan' should be very happy that Kwan already lose by not doing GP.

Millie, I think your logical applies to Cohen as well?

And what's your point? I've read just about this entire thread and I can't find that at all. Yes, she lost valuable time competing under CoP this fall to what some people believe is a real injury and what others believe as her backing out of the GP. Everyone knows she won't be able to get that CoP experience now. So why did you feel the need to post this? Are just rubbing salt into the wound for all the Kwan fans? That is really unnecessary IMO because I think they, of all people, understand most of all how disappointing this was for her not to be able to do the GP this year. *shakes head* :ohwell:

Anyway, I have faith that Michelle will come out ready to go in December for the cheesefest and ready for Nats too. I am very happy to hear that she's back on the ice and I hope she is able to stay healthy now for the rest of this season. :agree:

 .....LOL...once again I will try and insert some positive energy into this thread. Enough of the nitpicky arguments and negativity.....the girl is back on the ice! Can't we just be happy that a great champion is back in the game and possibly headed towards a third Olympic appearance? She has worked so hard for this and I wish her the best. I only hope Sasha can recover quickly enough to resume proper training.

Great post, BronzeisGolden. I couldn't agree more.

I could care less what happens to MK at this point, frankly. But IMO it's about time someone unseats her at Nats. Just my personal thoughts - remember my custom title? Gotta take the less popular side  plus I really believe this too.

Yet, you keep posting in Kwan thread? Just try to yank the chain of Kwaniac? But, but, if you don't care about Kwan why cares about Kwaniac?

Hard to understand uhm? If I don't care about someone, I don't bother to open the thread.....Well, ppl are different, and some do have too much time in hand. ;)

Hey, I just said it... And if you think about it real hard, it's true anyway. Forget about being a Kwan fan- it comes to the same thing. Why should my comment "offend" Kwaniacs?

Think about it- if she was better, she would be able to do Campbell's, SA and CoC (we'll assume she wouldn't have pulled out at the last minute). She would have gotten valuable Cop feedback (like everyone's said already). But she didn't. And regardless of whether it's injury, complacency, or whatever, she missed out on this opportunity (therefore her "loss"). That's all. What's so offensive about that?

Well, well. Posting thoughts in a GENERAL skating forum shouldn't qualify as "yanking anyone's chain". This isn't MKF (or is it?) I'd expect to hear someone say this at MKF but not here.

Really, what's the point?

Mzhenz, I know you were refering to Red Dog in your thread but its anyone's perorgative to to open a thread about whoever and whatever. You post on MkF and GS and you respond to threads on all skaters and have your opinions on all skaters. I think that at GS everybody's entitled to their own opinion not only for Kwanatics but for all fans of all skaters. I think its time for the kwanatics to cool down and not get their pee hot. I hope this don't turn into THE KWANATICS ATTACK.

I feel so differently than you about MK. I became a fan of skating because of her and now I am a fan of many skaters. I am a fan because of her brilliant skating over the years and because of the way she has always handled herself. I truely believe that Michelle came exceedingly close to quitting the eligible ranks after SLC, and that for the next three years ended up competing enough to stay eligible, keep her interest, stay healthy, and stay at the top of the ranks, to see if she had enough energy to go for another try at the Olympics. I really believe that her one-day at a time philosophy while frustrating to fans relfected the truth about her decision making. All indications are that, despite the fact that in the iterim figure skating decided to change all the rules and change the very fabric of what was needed to win competitions, and made obsolete the system that made her the "best." All indication is that she decided to go for another try. Now why she is so sorely criticized for this I will never truley understand, as I think it is courageous and admirable. It would have been much easier to quit. Once she made the decision all indication is that she has worked her a** off to be the best she could be. Many skaters in SO CA who watched training this summer have verified her efforts, and now she is injured. And now she has another huge obstacle in her way that her competitors don't - little COP experience. I haven't heard her blame anyone for her decisions, maybe if she'd competed more in the last 2 years, she'd have all this experience - maybe she'd be crippled or burnt out who knows. She is who she is, made the decisions she did. There is no one magic formula to winning the Olympics. Many skaters will take many roads and only one will win - does that mean if everyone did what that one did they would win - of course not - still only one would win. I am very sad for Michelle right now. I don't for a minute think she is faking this injury and I think she must be very frustrated that things haven't gone as she had planned. Will that ruin her chances - maybe. Maybe not - maybe it is just the hardship she needs to light a winning fire - again who knows. I care very much what happens to MK. I think regardless of the critics, she has given so much to the sport and is currently a major face of the figure skating world to the public. I think she has earned our respect. If she has to be "the best" for 13+ years to deserve our respect then God help us and what does that say about all the other less accomplished skaters. I would love to see her skate well enough to win it all - Nationals - the Olympics - and Worlds. To win even one of those titles would be an amazing accomplishment. But I want her to win not only because I love her skating and what it has brought to me personally, but also because I would be so privledged to watch HISTORY being made. A record like 10 National titles is History and I want to see history made, I want to be a part of that. Watching that kind of history be made just doesn't happen much and it is so special. I almost hope she wins Nationals more than I hope she wins the Olympics - although that would create a record that would be history making too. I don't want the titles handed to her - I hope she can rightfully take them - I want to watch someone accomplish something that amazingly special. It can be time for someone else next year when history won't be on the line. I won't be disappointed in her if she accomplishes none of what I want, I admire her for just trying.

P.S. Pain is what the patient says it is. I'm glad some of these folks aren't my nurse
ITA. Having had some nurses--and doctors--disbelieve my descriptions of pain, I came to the conclusion that there is only one decent response. Say to the doctor or nurse who doesn't believe you, "Well then, I hope you get what I have and that your doctor doesn't believe you're really sick or injured and in pain." Evil, but effective.

Good post and great allusion to Edward R. Murrow, Millie, who dedicated his life to getting to the truth via relentless fact collecting and who risked his career by going up against the rabid idealogue Joe McCarthy and his cronies, eg, Roy Cohn, who wanted to "protect" America by turning it into a totalitarian state.

Okay, I'm being a tad overdramatic, lol! But if we apply these ideas to this little thread and our little GS world, especially during an Olympic season, I think we may have to remind ourselves more than usual that there are going to be a lot more extreme opinions to which our first reaction (and maybe second, third...28th...141st...etc.) response may be, "Why you !@#$%!!! You should be BANNED for saying such horrible things about such a beautiful person as my skater--who I don't happen to know, but I can just tell she (or he) is a beautiful person because I've loved her ever since I first saw her and right away I just had this feeling."

Whether people say they think a skater is faking an injury because "they just have this feeling" or feel the earth moves when their skater performs, both involve feelings. Maybe it's just me, but if people feel something, it's dang hard to talk them out of feeling it precisely because they are feelings.

IMO, I think we would all do well to take the "Suck It Up" oath once a week until three months after the Olympics. The Suck It Up oath goes something like this (everybody has their own version):

I hereby pledge to suck it up when somebody posts that he thinks my skater blows; when somebody posts she "just has a feeling" my skater is lying; when somebody posts it's a fact that my skater has lousy edges or slow spins or no line or ugly hair. I pledge to respond to such posts if I feel like it and give MY side of my feelings, but that after two or three go-rounds with the poster who's posting icky things about my skater, I pledge to at most post "Then we'll have to agree to disagree" or "Whatever..." and SUCK IT UP!

Of course, pledges are made to be broken and if I get out of control, I hope one of my SUCK IT UP pals will PM me and try to talk me down.

Thus I make my SUCK IT UP pledge for this week, even though, so far, I haven't felt anyone has posted anything icky about any of the skaters I like or me, which, of course, means somebody will inadvertently do so next time I check GS.:)

Rgirl, SIU

Rgirl, to me, another way to look at it is, if you "have a feeling" that someone else's fave is a bad person, you could remain silent out of respect for your friend.

Anyway, ...

OK, now you have MADE me post this picture of Ilia Kulik's 2001 hair cut.

And here's Krylova and (I think) Ovsiannikov from the same event (Tara's Miracle Tour)

RG- right on

Now, I don't think any of these skaters is a bad person. (OK, except maybe Tonya Harding  ) I mean, to accuse someone of thinking that unless they come out and say it (or directly imply it) is just plain ridiculous IMO. Certain comments seem to ruffle feathers here, and while that's understandable, I think one should leave feelings as much as possible out of the equation. But that's just my "humble" opinion, of course.

Kathy- I can see where you are coming from re. MK. I have to acknowledge you though for explaining your feelings rather than getting mad or defensive. We need more of this around here.

Now, I don't doubt that MK has worked hard this past summer. Her injury (assuming she has one for argument's sake) tells me that she must have worked herself to the point of injury, because that's something she has "avoided" for many years. I went into details of this in another post.

I also agree that winning another Nats or Worlds, or getting another Oly medal would be an amazing accomplishment for her. It's also great to be a part of history- when it's on your side, that is. ;) Anyway, where I agree is that MK has done some really good things for skating, has a bunch of fans, and earns a lot of respect (I say for every critic she has, she has 4-5 fans to counter that critic.) Where I don't agree is with the sentiments. Yes, it would be history if Kwan wins, yada yada. But, not being a fan of hers, I can't really find "it" in me to "cheer her on"- at least not any more. Why? I'd rather not say- and I don't quite know myself. But from MY point of view, I think it's time someone else wins. I'm one of those who likes to see different faces on the podium (which has happened somewhat in the past two years at Worlds, and I love that.) If you know where I come from, it's not fun to see the same person win all the time. It just isn't. When it comes to the point where I can bet $100 that MK is going to win Nationals, and sit back and be fully confident, that's where some of the "fun" for me goes away. I don't like to know who wins ahead of time. That just spoils it for me. Plus, I don't feel MK has done all that she could have in the past four years. I wish she could have done more. That's why I've been critical of her.

So, in 06, I really would like a new face on that top step at Nats. That's just MY sentiment...my PREDICTION (vision if you will) is that MK will win...again.

ITA that the best skater that night should win. If it's MK, let it be her. Otherwise, someone else needs to win. JMO guys

I can see my gut reaction
I was going to ask you what is your basis of concluding that Michelle is not as injured as announced. I was thinking OH Bijoux has the ability to make (or in this case dismiss) medical diagnosis by a board certified sports medicine specialist who has actually seen, and examined the patient (as announced by usfsa) So you dismiss the diagnosis of Dr. Yu without even examing Kwan. Now I see it is your gut reaction. BTW, how often are gut reactions scientifically and medically accurate??

pain is so subjective
I agree, and different people have different threshold for pain too, so what is your point leading??? BTW, some athletes have very high threshold for pain, so even without the report pain, orthopods are able to diagnose injuries.

will certainly be backed up by one's personal orthopod
Since you are talking about Michelle Kwan. Lets see, orthopod announced that she has a strained hip ligament. Correct me if I am wrong, you are claiming that Kwan falsely reported that she has pain, and her orthopod Leisure Yu made a diagnosis of strained hip ligament on the basis of her report and nothing else. Are you also hinting that FS orthopods are ignoring medical ethics, and sell their diagnosis to malingerers, thus violating all the rules of their state medical boards, more specifically in this case, you are saying that Yu is doing that? So here are a few questions for you:

1. Are you saying that Leisure Yu is ignoring his specialty's practice guideline for making a strain hip ligament diagnosis without a thorough physical exam, and imaging and any other work ups??
2. You said Leisure Yu is Kwan's orthopod, actually he is also Goebel's orthopod, and usfsa's orthopod. Most likely Kwan and Goebel got a referral from usfsa to seek out Yu. So are you hinting that usfsa is also in this conspiracy of trying to help the skaters to malinger injuries??

So call me a cynic or sceptic...
Sure you are entitled to your gut reaction. Don't know whether you are a cynic or not, but IMO your gut reaction is as interesting and as medically sound as some folks theories about AIDS, and avian flu are government conspiracies.
