MK versus Greg Louganis in surfboard contest

Adorable!

The barrel roll sequence was pretty scary: that collision could have bruised someone up pretty thoroughly.

But overall, they both looked strong and adept--not to mention intrepid. Man, Louganis looks spectacular, doesn't he? People twenty years younger than he have less muscle tone than that.

!!!! I didn't recognize Louganis, since I havent seen anything of him after Seoul, but he is still very handsome!!!

Michelle looks like she has eaten a light bulb which I don't know if it translates well but we say it for people extra photogenic who always look perfect!!

I watched the cupcake video too :) is this an ad for a cruise? Do you get to meet Louganis and Michelle on board?

That was so cute! At first I was like, how is this a fair contest? Louganis has to be far more adept to being in the water. But then they did the surfing contest, and guess who's better at staying upright on a slippery and unpredictable surface?

Doesn't surprise me that Michelle Kwan was better at surfing - but she did make it look easy...Mr. Louganis well I don't know what physical regimen you are on but it's definitely working lol...

Surfboard to Michelle. From the teaser, though, it looked like Greg cleaned Michelle's clock in table tennis.

Louganis has been one of my favorite Olympians since he was sixteen years old. It's great to see him in such superb condition, and so happy. And of course it's wonderful to see Michelle. By the way, I think her voice is a very pleasing pitch. It isn't nasal and girlish as with a lot of skaters and gymnasts.

^ I wonder if Michelle has worked with a voice coach in connection with making speeches for the state department and her other public appearances. When she was a teenager she had something of a valley girl accent, which has disappeared (maybe just because of maturity).

Yes but the board says Louganis - Michelle 0-0 :/
When the rest will be released?I want to see how they were cooking and the casino!!!

This ad campaign is so awesome! It's also incredible how Michelle is so fittingly in shape. She could do anything on ice and compete right now!

Yes she was one of the torch bearers in London! Michelle sure knows how to work her *** off doing the best she can:D

I think the idea is that people get to vote after each contest. You have to go to the Royal Caribbean facebook site to cote. So the voting is still open.

Michelle should win surfboard by a score of 2 to 1. Michelle made Greg wipe out on the barrel roll and Michelle stood up without falling. It looked like Greg did better on the move where you push the board out in front of you and then catch up to it.

I wonder if Michelle will compete in the diving contest and Louganis in the skating contest?

Was Michele torche carrier?
Great photo. She also consults the president I read :)

Actually, there seems to be some controversy about Michelle carrying the torch in England. Some of the local people were disappointed that they weren't chosen for a leg of the torch run through their home towns, while huge big bucks sponsor Coca-Cola got to bring in foreign celebrities like Michelle and singer Will-I-am to generate publicity for Coke.

^the same office it says on FB that consults the President for healthy nutrition?or is it another Bureau? :)

ha, funny ab coca cola, when we lost the bid in 1989 ab the 100 years of olys, I blamed the drink and swore I wont drink coca-cola again and kept the promise for many years.

Michelle serves on the President's Council for Physical Fitness and Sports. She is on a bunch of boards with similar titles. I don't know exactly what all of them do. I think the driving force behind this one is Mrs. Michelle Obama, who has marked health, nutrition, and especially childhood obesity as a primary focus of concern.

Michelle was also recently appointed by Secretary if State Hilary Clinton to the Council to Empower Women through Sports. This was timed with the fortieth anniversary of a famous law passed in 1972 called "Title Nine" which required that all schools and colleges must spend an a equal amount of money on girls' sports as on boys'. In her position on the Board of Directors for the Special Olympics Michelle has worked with U.S Vice President Joe Biden. (When Biden and Michelle gave out the medals at the winter Special Olympic events he remarked, "This is a dream come true -- to walk out onto the ice with Michelle Kwan!" :) )

Michelle just seems to be at the top of the short list when they need someone in the the areas of sports, fitness, and women. She is also involved in organizations for promoting opportunities for Asian Americans.

Yeah, I don't know which if any of those things are paid positions. I know that the work she does for the State Department is not paid. I suspect that all the government councils and so forth (President's Council on Physical Fitness, for example) are also unpaid, and that all her money comes from giving speeches and for representing companies like Coca Cola. (Disney, still? Or has her contract with them lapsed?) Those two activities alone could add up to substantial annual earnings. (I think Mary Lou Retton for years listed her occupation solely as a motivational speaker and did quite well, all because she did well in the Olympics at age sixteen.) Just a few speeches a yearwould put Michelle into six-digit territory, depending on the cut that the speaker's company takes for setting up the speeches. That would leave her plenty of time for the other activities, which may pay little or nothing.

While MK was still competing as a teen, her estimated earnings were 5 million yearly. Danny Kwan as we all know maximized every opportunity. As the family business, she made them all rich. I'd love to see her rinks. I wonder if the LA rink has a room where her medals and photos are kept? I imagine some stuff is in the Hall of Fame(s). I can imagine what a business it must be with Karen, Peter etc coaching under a giant MK mural. I imagine it is a swanky set up. I wonder if her neices are skaters? With all the investments made of her touring contracts of 14 years, she is quite wealthy. I think only Yuna is richer. Danny made, it seems, only one bad move-the famous Harlick boots that may have led to MK's toes fracture.

Frank Carroll was not really "in charge" he said in a documentary. I have often wondered if she stayed with the boot she grew up in. She might not have had the bad year in 97 and the fracture leading up to Nagano. I never knew when she skated she was in pain at all. "Lyra" being so perfect. So, in the long run, Danny's decision may have cost her the 97 title, the favorite status, the toes fracture which healed fine but was a bump for her otherwise charmed career. In the end, the silver made her stay in, grab more titles, many more, and made her so well known. Kwan must mean "money" in some Chinese dialect. Such good fortune. Talk about an injury with a silver lining. I hope Laura Lepisto and Kira have some of that success as show skaters, as I think they have both retired due to injuries? This seems the rule nowadays, not the exception. I see my favorite Finns will be in Yu-Na's show in August-so glad they can skate in shows at least! Everyone seems to end up injured!

I do not think there is anyone who was as injury free as Michelle. I guess she was smart to forgo 3x3's, as she was winning without them. When I think of Tara's price for the gold, or Yagudins...they didn't do more than 3 years each in SOI and the jumps were not there. I feel we missed so much by not seeing Yagudin be able to perform with jumps intact for years like with Plushy and Kulik, one a lengendary greatest competitor, other as amazing artist/pro. Well, rambling along...forgive me! Off season-and how many days until the Games???! Can't wait!

Yes, where's the thread where we talk about the summer Games? Point me to it; I can't wait to hear everyone's reactions and input. I know there are a lot of gymnastics experts on here, and a few tennis buffs such as jcoates. Limber up your typing fingers, folks!
