This would explain why he actually jumps *up* when attempting the 3a this season which I’ve really been enjoying. The technique is looking so much more solid. I hope this is not messing up the timing on his 3a though.

Was it more or less decent than other 4A attempts out there?
I'm actually not surprised that he's attempting it. Raf said he'd attempt it and Raf never lied about things he's capable to do. While I don't see it being necessary if he can consistently clean 7 quads in two programs, it's characteristic of Team Nathan to always plan ahead and keep pushing his tech arsenal.

He actually emphasized this in his Oregon SC zoom class back in July, that one should think of jumping upward instead of forward when attempting axels. Maybe he got this tip for his quad back then
ETA: Speaking of which he actually shared quite a few axel tips across the span of three zoom classes. And he always made sure to let the class know that he was not good at axels himself and was still struggling with the jump. Boy oh boy.

I did wonder when Johnny asked him about it. Normally he would just blow the question off but this time he said there was a lot more work to be done.

Yeah I think Mariah (according to usfigureskatingfanzone.com) is from Lake Forest, California which seems to be very close to the fires so hopefully she and her family are doing okay
Not too sure about Nathan Chen since usfigureskatingfanzone.com says his hometown is Salt Lake City, Utah. But we all know that he's based in California too. I think I've seen mentions online of Nathan being from Long Beach but I'm not sure if that's true or not. If he is from Long Beach, he should be good since it's about 30-45 minutes drive to where the fires are.
Either way, really hope that all SoCal residents are safe and well during this time!!
Haven't seen the video, but searching around twitter quite a few trustworthy people seem pretty impressed by his attempt and think he's very close to doing it like lunalovesskating says above.

Also, I've always heard rumors of him doing a Quad-quad combo in practice. I would really like to see what they look like, even if he never puts it into competition....

Yeah fairly new i suppose.... I've been following Nathan on IG since 2018 but haven't really be closely following him until this past May. I saw that Nathan was back with the dog but I didn't know that he belongs to Nathan's brother or that his brother is currently in Colorado.
Regardless, it must still be very worrisome that the town you live in is being ravaged by a forest fire and you could potentially end up losing everything if it spreads further.
