Papadakis and Cizeron: "It was difficult"

Ohhhh boy, so agree with this!! I have fielded soooo many questions this season about “why those girls have such thin straps, aren’t they worried?”, “her strap is gone! One slipped off halfway!! Why did she choose that dress?” and so on.

I couldn’t come up with anything other than the theory that too much “flesh-mesh” would inhibit movement and perhaps isn’t as necessary for dance due to the lack of jumping & throwing.

After a “was that a nipple??” (no, for the record, it was just a crystal pattern) today, I was on the verge of googling what the deal is with their costumes.

NHK is doing a trial 8K broadcast. We may have to go to them for the official word.

Edit: Upon further review, no need for the 8K, it was definitely out and about.

Wasn't it her responsibility to take care of her own dress? She should blame only herself.

I understand that their coach actually sewed the collar-piece shut before they went onto the ice. Their initial moves just had enough force to snap the stitches. In other words, they did everything they could to prevent from it happening and it happened anyway, and they still gave a good solid performance after it did. Nobody is 'to blame'; it was just the kind of bad luck you can't prevent for trying.

I remember one of the team coordinators/coaches always having a small kit/bag at the ready that contained...

  • shoe polish (black & white) for last minute boot touch-ups;
  • extra skate-laces (black & white) for Tonya Harding episodes;
  • a screwdriver and extra screws for repairing stripped blade-screws (fasteners);
  • bobby-pins and elastic bands for 'hair-malfunctions'; and finally
  • crazy glue, two-sided tape and safety pins for costume-malfunctions.

We used to have all these emergency supplies ready-for-use at Sectional, Divisional and National competitions. So, I can not believe the same would not be available for GrandPrix and Championship events, and especially the Olympics!

I'd be surprised (and mad) if SkateCanada didn't have one of their accredited Team Coordinators ('Team Mothers') backstage in possession of an "emergency bag" at all times. If they don't, then I suggest Michael Slipchuck buy himself a big fanny pack and stock up on supplies immediately!

Similarly, as it relates to P/C ... maybe Diedier should spend less time and money politicking, and more of both on shopping!?!

I hope this doesn't turn into some sort of "nipplegate" a la Janet Jackson in the Super Bowl. I feel sorry for Gabby actually - imagine exposing yourself inadvertently in front of a large crowd and on TV. In Canada, CBC showed it in SLOW MOTION on the repeat - I thought it was in poor taste to do that.

I too was also wondering why they didn't just put mesh on the sides to help keep it in place.

Maybe in North America but I doubt she'll get any of the absurd backlash Janrt received in France.

I just watched the video of their SD and I really felt for Gabi to skate with that issue for over two minutes. Wishing them the best for the FD.

The former president of US Figure Skating, Morrie Stillwell, thinks Papadakis unhooked the dress herself.

Just kidding. But on another message board, he carried on about Harding unhooking her dress during the ladies' short program at the 1993 US Nationals, when in video footage, the neck clap holding her dress together clearly popped open by itself.

Frankly i'm shocked by people blaming gabby for this. It was an accident and she kept skating to the best she could despite the circumstances. I never seen anyone say they should be taking more care of their boots when they encounter boot troubles during a program yet somehow this is gabby's fault ????

She's 20 and it's her first olympics and she looked mortified when she realized at what happened unfortunately in the very last second of the program even though she skated amazingly under this accidentally added pressure.

And you are all there blaming her ?????

They had a slight wobble in their lift and desynchronized the second part of the twizzles but it was very good otherwise. My favourite of the season for them. I think they skater bigger than before. I can't be the only one who thought the program was still great? I mean almost nobody noticed in the rink.

It was really bad. Her nipple was showing several times during the program, I think already from the second step sequence. I was looking at their feet during the live skate and only saw it afterwards in the slow motion at the end. Went to rewatch after the event just to see their skating, but then noticed it was showing in the step sequence. I stopped watching, felt bad for the poor girl.

Sounds very amateur! "Repair" a dress during warmup?!
Nothing amateur about it, these things happen. Figure skating costumes are not made of steel.

Good thing about these slips is that they are truly not so noticeable in the arena when watching from the stands.

Right now, I think the blame for the malfunction is much less important than the fact that they were able to stay focused to skate as well as they did. They could have had a real meltdown. Instead, they kept going and gave a solid performance. That was just all kinds of gutsy and they deserve a lot of respect, IMO. Wishing them well for the free dance and hoping everyone skates their best!

I think the blame is more important, because such an exceedingly rare event has now happened twice in these games, and we have to make sure this isn't a systemic issue.

I think that if you're not interested in showing your breasts to anyone, you should be allowed to stop for a faw seconds and get it together. The fact that it happenned twice during the Olympics should be a bit revealating.

Prior to entering the ice for the warmup, the female coach with them in the Kiss and Cry was trying to repair it. Check out the NBC coverage.

Gosh...those coaches need safety pins in their bag of tricks. This should not happen!

I am very saddened by the complete lack of understanding and simpathy towards Gabriella, who not only had her chances of a gold medal diminished by this accident but had to withstand the embarassement of being exposed to the whole world.

As if that is her fault, really. What the heck people. - Just take a look at some of the headlines about the "nipslip!" and all of that and imagine being in her position. Why would you even blame her for something like that! It must be mortifying enough.

Also I'm pretty sure this can only help them in the free and in the long run. No such thing as bad advertising.

You guys - Ice Dance is making headlines! You know, the one discipline that normally gets "dancing pairs" and "how are ice dancers different from figure skaters".
