Patrick Chan

And as Skate Canada approaches media coverage is increasing! Thank you everyone, for the article and video links! Here are some more:

Patrick Chan returns to competition for rematch against Olympic rival

Chan takes centre ice at Skate Canada

I agree with what Tracy Wilson said in the article above: "Ideally, this is not the way to ease back into a competitive career. He will have to face the enormity of his comeback head on. It was clear from watching Patrick train and compete last month, that he’s more than capable of regaining past form and that the sport is fortunate to have him back. He just has to weather the storm, get through the early comeback stages and find his comfort level in front of judges, once again."

All the media hype about a rematch between Patrick and Hanyu is going to make Patrick's goal to skate regardless of the outcome that much harder. Now I'm starting to get nervous!

Thanks, SkateFiguring, for your video link and explanation of Patrick's history with the media and the fans. I'm sad for him that his long-term relationship ended (and I have some thoughts about that), but I'm confident that he will gain much more than he lost as he continues to grow and become his own man.

I'm looking for a clip, either on Youtube or Dailymotion. I watched it before, but I cannot remember the address.

It was Patrick doing a 4T-3T crashing into the board. Takahashi and his lady coach were still at KnC, and Christy Krall was watching Patrick behind the board. When the crash happened, the response from everyone was  and cute at the same time. That clip was priceless!

Do you mean this?

I think seabm7 is looking for a Takahashi fancam with close up view of Krall, Takahashi and his coach. I linked it a couple of times before. I don't have time to locate it now. Maybe someone else can find it before I do.

I neglected to mention in my post about Patrick's unpopularity that he also encountered much resentment and anger from Johnny Weir's fans because Johnny was beaten by Patrick and came in 6th at the Olympics with his flawlessly simple program and didn't get to skate his Poker Face for the Gala. He was/is very popular in China and there was even a confession in GS from one of his Chinese fans about how they manipulated stories to sour Patrick's character.

The Fan Fest was actually initiated with the Patrick fan thread opened by a sympathetic admin (Doris I believe) so we can have peace while discussing Patrick. Those were the days.

Yes, I think that is what I am looking for. In the clip, I could see the height of his huge 4T and 3T, so it was very nice.

Patrick looks good in practice. He had issues in the run though but without music his jumps look okay-ish. His quad and 4-3 seems safe. He also landed 3A (not very secure landing). Overall he isn't at his top shape but it's understandable. He is getting back on the track.

Another CBC article:"I was nervous and wasn't comfortable in the competition environment anymore," he said. "I have to get back into the world of competitive skating as opposed to show skating, it's very different, and the only way to get better at it, and to get more comfortable is to keep competing."

I like quote from the same article, when he is referring to his junior rivals: "Watching them is almost looking at me in the past," he said. "You could actually see the pressure on their shoulders, and [them] maybe really thinking, like, it's life or death; whereas I'm just there to do my job. I'm not going to ask myself to do something that I haven't been training."

Sounds like he has a sturdy, down-to-earth approach to things.

Here's a 39 minute video of Men's Practice Group 1, where you get to see Patrick do his FS at 19:10. But watch him do two good jumps at the end of practice, starting at 38:00 and 38:45 (quad).

Just watched Patrick's SP performance a few times and he did better than my expectations. Even the British commentator conceded that "there's no disputing the quality of skating in Patrick Chan."

If you watch this HD video version, with the Russian commentators, toward the end of the video in the background you can hear Patrick say at 5:35, "it's so frustrating", and later he sighs and says, "I have great practices." Then another sigh.

As I stated in the SC thread, Patrick and I survived tonight. He did OK, with help from Hanyu who found ways to blow the SP.

As much as Patrick says he doesn't mind the medals so much now, a little real competition experience may wake up his competitive nature and make him realize that good memorable performances and winning are not mutually exclusive but often go hand in hand. I think he will remember and rekindle the fire and put it to use again, properly managed.

Interesting article about the changes Patrick made to his training route:

Chan has taken a new approach to training

Among the changes the 24-year-old has made: no training on weekends.

"Just skate Monday to Friday, and really give it every day of the week 100 per cent and not have to dread skating on weekends and feeling tired from one week to the next. Now I feel rested and motivated and energized when I get to the rink on Monday," Chan said Thursday.

Another great video of an interview with Tracy Wilson, where he dissects his jumps:

Patrick sounds so mature in his answers here. It was great to hear him critique himself but still remain so positive about it. The top 3 mens' press conference videos are all awesome - they all seemed relaxed and happy! Poor Yuzuru -- even though I'm a diehard Patrick fan, I'm sad that he did not do better. His reign as Olympic Champion has not been easy so far. It was sweet of Daisuke Murakami to say "Welcome back, Patrick" when he finished talking at the press conference. And it made me happy how Patrick mentioned that "seeing everyone in the hallway" and "hearing the audience at practices" were things he enjoyed about being back. He said that stuff "gives him chills" and that that's a good sign that it was the right decision for him to come back. "Competing" means so much more than doing each program once to be judged. It seems like it's a whole package that includes seeing your fellow skaters, practicing, etc. His response to that question didn't include "the competition" at all, which made me smile.

I'm sad that Patrick is so frustrated, but for succeeding in competition, maybe that's a good sign. I don't get the sense that Patrick wants to "settle" for flawed programs, even if they are artistically-pleasing.

OT: I wrote Daisuke Murakami's first and last name because, for me, "Daisuke" is reserved for Mr. Takahashi. I miss seeing him compete. I imagine if another "Patrick" comes along, I'll write his first and last name too! ;)
