Patrick Chan

Oh, and in the article above, Patrick mentions the possibility of doing the quad flip later this year.

What do you all think of that?!!

a few years ago, after Patrick learned the 4T, many people including myself, believed the next step would be the 4Flip... Why? simply because Patrick's 3F is easy, exquisite and also because then, Patrick seemed to master toe pick jumps better than edge jumps.

However, when we watch Patrick today : his 3A is so good, his 4S seems like it's going to work out (fine we saw only one attempt but it was pretty good in terms of position and rotation) we cannot say that he has issues with edge jumps ;) quite the contrary.

I feel that Patrick is surprising himself as he goes along. I think his mentality is changing. From the two articles we have read today, it seems like seeing all Chen's quads on a daily basis makes him believe "if he can do it, me too" ... which is exactly why we often put youngsters in competition situation... I have to admit doing that a few times when I was tired with the lack of progress of a young student : your sibling is doing it, why can't you? " hahahaha it can lead to awful things but it can also do the little kick in the assets that someone needs. Perhaps that is why Patrick is not ruling out the 4F ;)

4F or not, I think the next step is to put a second quad in the SP. that's where he will need to adjust if he wants to be competitive and in the final flight at worlds.

I can name already a handful without thinking too hard of guys who do have two quads in the SP... and we all know the top 6 will be in the final flight. That's key for Patrick. (Yuzu, Javi, Shoma, Boyang, Chen, Kovtun, Reynolds and ??? all have two different quads, at least and put 2 in the SP: some with less success than others, I admit it)

So bring it on Patrick. I think that what has evolved this year is that the fear is gone. The attitude is much more positive. Patrick feels part of the game. He's like a girl who just got dumped with a brand new dress and high heels :) she's walking down the street and feeling that she still has it ;) HAHA what an analogy!!! And I didn't even steal it from skaterboy

VB I was glad that you saw Emdee in the practice session thread... I keep reading her posts in my reading of the entire Patrick Chan thread ;) nice to see an old friend right?

ETA perhaps the pops on the flip is related to him having tried the quad already :) sometimes it messes up reflexes

Have you tried GS member apgold? Yesterday they were asking about meeting up for brunch (see post here).

If not, you can try QuadAxel3T on Twitter. They are already at the venue:

Thanks! But I think I'm gonna skip the practices and just go to the competition, my sister won't be able to join me until the evening for the SD and the Men so I'll be alone for the Ladies and Pairs. The Hershey Centre is actually quite strict, I might have to leave the premises to give me sister her ticket to come in but apparently they don't like people running in and out, didn't have this problem before at the Skydome or the ACC /sigh

As for 4F only if he feels that it's really necessary, at his age he will probably end his skating career after Pyeongchang, he's going to have to weigh his options because learning such a difficult element with about 1.5 years to go is risky because of injuries.

Here's a new article with lots of good details that address what 4everchan was talking about above.

I am so proud of Patrick! From 1 quad and 1 3A last year to 3 quads & two 3As this year. I bet he thought he would never do it, but he is!!!

I knew it has been his step by step plan since his comeback last season as laid out with Coach Johnson. From 1 quad and 1 3A to start the season last year to 2 quads and 2 3As by 4CC to 3 quads and 2 3As to start the 2016 GP season, his progress has been unfolding as planned, with all sorts of unexpected situations last season making the journey tumultuous. Most importantly, he has been healthy and has made steady progress mentally as well. He is currently in a very good place technically and mentally, boding extremely well for the performances and results.

I think his main goal at this competition is to get that 4S landed successfully with no ill effect on his program. From his practice, we know he can do it. I am going to keep the faith that he will do it in the competition. I'm also ready to be blown away because it is such a beautiful program made so wonderful with his sublime skating.

Go Patrick! Enjoy and learn from this competition with all the love and support from you fans.

Lucky you! Enjoy the competition in person! Tell us how it went, too!

Here's Patrick's FS as shot from @QuadAxel3T's cell phone. You get a nice view of his gorgeous 3A3T in the 2nd half, as well as those steps afterwards.

Can't wait to see his costume!

Please Patrick wear a real costume, I don't want anymore non-costumes.

And yeah I'll probably do a write up after! If anyone here will be there come say hi! I'll be in Section 18 row A!

Well, i hope that this season he will put the 4S in both programs. It´s necessary for win and for his motivation... about other types of jumps...well, he jumps so well but i prefer that he would rather focus on not falling and maintain their health.

Patrick Chan: “I am going to be a different skater this year”

Calica, what a great article!!

I love how Patrick now understands that he 1) has has to be in tune with himself at all times, 2) that he needs to not look at others but instead try to outdo himself, and 3) that the central issue to tackle is how to skate well under pressure, so that he performs well in any circumstance. And I love that he is so organized now... and that he wants to have fun skating... awesome!

Now, back to bed for me!

Men's practice coming up at 12:55 local time.

It's has started and it seems they will practice run through in the order of the SP, starting with Misha Ge, then Yan Han. Patrick will be the 5th to skate.

How does Patrick (or any skater) decide which elements to mark at certain competition practices? Sometimes he marks the quad, sometimes the Axel, etc. I can see marking the steps often due to space. I wondered whether skaters always choose to mark the same elements, but it seems to change from practice to practice. Any thoughts or insights?

watching on tv... warm up now... I will be here with my comments later on :) I haven't watched any of the rest... it's all recorded though.

Looking forward to catching up on the day's events.

GO PCHIDDY!!!!
