Patrick Chan

i am busy so i am recording everything in PVR... cable is useful for once.
Thanks. I checked it out a couple of days ago. I believe I'll find something that works when the time comes. I will be staying home tomorrow evening just for the Men's SP.

It's ironic I need to find foreign stream for a Canadian event. I used to think so for SA.

Here's my roundup so far. Will be updating more as we go along.

ONGOING: Patrick Chan 2016 Skate Canada International: Day 1

Oh, I got to share Patrick's beauty with members of my writing group! I told some new members how I became a fan and showed them his 2013 TEB Elegie SP - they were impressed. One member said, "You drew me into your story about figure skating - makes me want to watch more figure skating now."

Beverley Smith's article about Patrick just came out!

https://bevsmithwrites.wordpress.com/2016/10/27/patrick-chans-happy-accident/

"He landed a lovely one in practice on Thursday. “I know a little more what to do to be successful,” Chan said at the Hershey Centre, where he skated 17 years ago as a juvenile. (He knows this ice better than anybody.) “It felt great on practice today.”"

I love what Marina said:

"As for Zoueva, she feels privileged to have Chan in her rink. She thinks of him as a Rembrandt painting, a work of art. “Ice is my home,” she said. “It’s my house. It’s like always there is a piece of art, his skating, in it.”"

Chan, she said, just needs to believe that he can do it, that “he really can do anything.”

Here's a YouTube of the mens' practice this morning:

Misha's on. Patrick next.

Gorgeous 4T+3T and 3A. A small step out on 4S.

Landing all jumps so far. No clapping!

Doubling a jump while I was posting the above, I think.

Just love love love the StSq and the music with it.

Very nice practice! So smooth and beautiful. The 4T3T looked so light and airy, like it was no big deal.

I could hear the piano in the 2nd half this time!

Oh yeah, was that a 3A+3T or 3A+2T? I could have sworn that it was a triple-triple combo...

IT WAS A 3A+3T AND OH MY WORD IT WAS GORGEOUS!!!!! I guess he tweaked his layout a little more because I assumed he was planning 3A+2T there, like last year. Those Axels were two of the best I've seen Patrick do EVER!!!!! In the past it looked like he was really laboring on the takeoff of his Axels, but now he just steps right up into them. Beautiful 4T+3T as well.

My question is, is that his costume??? It looks more "official" than normal practice wear but still a bit casual. I don't think Patrick has ever worn a short-sleeve shirt in the LP before.

And yes, the music is even better now. The program is so beautiful!!!!! :luv17: I hope Patrick doesn't get into a pattern of always missing the 3F because he's tired. Every jump matters for his TES.

ETA: I just read Beverley Smith's latest article fully. How heartwarming! I'm glad Patrick ended up where he is for the end of his competitive career. The new training environment seems to have done him a world of good.

Is there anyone here who's already at the venue? I have to bring a bag of stuff with me to the Hershey Centre and I won't be able to check into my accommodation until later but apparently the rules say no big bags so I'm not sure if I can bring it to watch the practices, for the actual competition I won't have it.

Have you tried GS member apgold? Yesterday they were asking about meeting up for brunch (see post here).

If not, you can try QuadAxel3T on Twitter. They are already at the venue:

I watched Patrick's practice finally...

Here's my take on it.

Music: is so much better when the crowd doesn't clap...
Costume: Well, Patrick could wear anything and catch my eye ;) I like the colour of the top on him... but I do think this is a practice outfit... pants are very well fitted ;) haha

Practice and layout :

Of course, Patrick marked some of the key jumps for us to get the final layout... Here are my impressions

4T-3T : GORGEOUS
3A : textbook and high
4S : actually, it looks like it will be just as good for him as the 4T in the long run. Step out here... but it was a nice jump, good air position, looking quite stable.... If he landed those like this all year, I'd be okay with it :) that's a minus 1 or minus 2 in GOE I believe, no big deal.

Patrick takes a break over the Choreographic Sequence, skates to the end of the ice... waits for his cue...

Second half : bonus factor.

4t: doesn't do it... he stopped just before jumping... Probably didn't feel like it was necessary or someone was in the corner there.
3A-3T : ermmm... Why? to show off? Flaunt your fierceness Pchiddy! I say this because it's obvious that there won't be a 3T there, if he does indeed tags one after the 4T. Zayak is watching ;) and Patrick already repeats the 4T and the 3A.... so I am guessing the triple axel felt really good and he just felt like adding the 3T.... perhaps it's what they have decided to do, if Patrick does like at Finlandia and cannot tag a 3T after one of the first quads.... then at least, he would save about 3 points...
I think with Patrick, the strategy is simple here... he will put it on the first quad or second quad, if not the second triple axel... whatever FIRST works best. There's no point to delay the combo in the FP.

Enough silly banter: what I find amazing is the quality of his triple axel. They were strong already at Finlandia but here, they look higher and bigger. Loving those jumps so much... this is what happens when you push yourself technically adding other elements, the ones you have already feel easier.

3loop: superb quality again... and then the little zigzags i love ;)

Patrick marks the 3Lutz... erm .... i really wanted to know if he would do the 3Lz-2t-2l or the 3lz-1/2l-3s the latter gives more points but patrick hasn't done this combo since the olympics.

3F :doubled... patrick is probably tired.... he goes right into a spin there... so i think that perhaps he combo will happen on the lutz... but still no fixed layout yet.

The program is indeed gorgeous. Pure beauty. What I liked is that the jumps have great quality. It wasn't one of those shaky practice sessions that can happen from time to time (to anyone). It was calm, down to business skating. I like this attitude.

In the end, what I like about adding the 4S in this layout is that it also gives patrick options that can bring up the BV. If he does the 3 jump combo with the 3S, he has the same exact BV as Javi. That means that quadsters not only have to beat clean Javi but they also have to beat clean Patrick, which may not happen if they make a couple mistakes... even one mistake could change things drastically.

I am excited to see him skate in Skate Canada now. I don't care about the results because what I saw in the practice shows that he has improved tremendously in 3 weeks since Finlandia. Very positive to watch.
