Patrick Chan

It is very definitely interesting to hear how he only checks the scores and not the performances. I've always wondered how much skaters actually watch other's people's program. I imagine it's very different for every skater, just like some actors/actresses has zero desire to watch TV or movies.

Honestly if it were me I would not watch other performances at all, since I have so much to worry about my own performances.

I think it's very healthy actually. Checking the scores helps to find out where the general level stands... nobody really approached his world record this year... everyone did well but nobody was perfect among the top contenders... so it tells him that the level is similar to the previous year. However, by not watching, he is not getting into any kind of useless narrative about how things went on the ice, who was nervous, how the judges marked people on PCs... it keeps his mind fresher to focus on himself. I've mentioned before that I am a musician... and people constantly ask me, "what kind of music do you listen when you relax" and I have to say that most of the time, I don't listen to music to relax... I do other things to relax :) I also rarely listen to other people's interpretation of music I am learning... I want to keep myself fresh to explore on my own . But... I know that not everyone proceeds that way :) and I am sure that some skaters watch every footage available and study scoresheets too as that's how they feel better... some people need to know, some people prefer not to?

Previously, I was so consumed by my Yuzu love (which I still am) that I didn't really care about Patrick that much. Then, for some reason, I had some kind of epiphany a few months ago and I think I'm becoming a fan. :confused2:

Well, when I miss live competition I check scores too before I decide to watch the performances. The COP protocol gives a very good picture of the performances and the event.

Really, though some promising skaters were promising again, the Men skating this season was nothing to be excited about at the top level.

Please share your epiphany. I love epiphanies.

I've been wondering about something lately. Some people accuse Patrick of "not being expressive." Part of this is probably because of his lack of facial expression during competitive programs. But he does have a wonderful smile and it appears often in show programs (Steppin' Out, Don't Worry Be Happy, etc). He smiled a little bit in Take Five, which got me thinking. If Patrick skated to upbeat music competitively more often (as opposed to the classical, lyrical stuff that he's so good at), would he be more likely to smile in competition? Would smiling help relax him, allowing him to actually skate better? Or, would smiling be more likely to cause him to lose focus? A separate question is, would this endear him to more fans (seems to work for Javi ;))

We know from his recent comments that he admired P&C's FD at Worlds this year, which, again, is in that lyrical mold. He "felt something" watching it (heck, I did too) and wants people to "feel something" when he skates. I wonder if he thinks programs have to be a certain type to do that? He's a huge fan of Kurt Browning, so maybe not. I think there was a rumor that he might use Best of Me for the SP next season. I kind of hope he does something more fast-paced. Esqualo might work, but you can't really smile during a tango. I love Patrick's lyrical side but I think he could do more to show off his fun side in competition. But maybe that's asking too much.

Let's discuss! :)

I think Patrick has tried too many classical programs, it could be good for him to try fun programs. He has the sense of humor to do it. And his skating skill is stellar he could do a lot better than Javi. If he goes for it, even just in the short (as I think he will keep the LP at Japan Open), that would be great to see.

I certainly find the idea interesting, it would be new ground for Patrick. But I think it would be better if he did that in a SP since you can keep a high level of energy throughout the whole performance to keep the audience hooked. It would be really nice to see his skating skills adapting to a different style :)

Canada's figure skating star Chan set to resume training (AFP)

Mini-excerpt:

Chan will kick off his summer training in Toronto with choreographer David Wilson. They will spend two weeks creating a new short programme and retooling the Chopin-backed long routine that Chan used to win the invitational Japan Open last year.

At Chan's training base in Detroit, his main coach will continue to be Kathy Johnson, who will commute periodically from her Kansas City, Missouri home.

Very very pleased to know Patrick is really coming back to competitions. Yay!

Thanks a lot as always for all the updates, golden. :) I love your current avator. Another 'thank you' is I've learned a new English word YMMV: 'Your mileage may vary', which could be something like 'your opinion may be different' from the tone of the sentence, I guess. Idk how this phrase originally comes from though, because the only thing with the word 'mileage' that comes up to my mind is airlines mileage programs (frequent flyer programs) such as 'AAdvantage'. ;)

Anyway, best of luck to Patrick in the new season! :cheer: Look forward to seeing him again on competition ice.

Lol It comes from emissions tests on cars and the phrase 'your mileage may vary' in car reports being used to show that the petrol /gas consumption in a car may vary across different people. Then it may became an Internet phrase to confirm that you realised what you were saying was just your opinion and someone else may feel differently. it isn't something you would hear when people talk. It is very much online slang.

Patrick heard you and will be skating to a fun SP with lyrics.

I can hardly wait.

I love that we finally have some fun SP.:cheer:

Now I am wondering about his GP choices, SC is a must for Patrick I assume? I hope he will do SC and CoC.
