Programs for 2013-2014 season

Thank God. I just wish he would have kept Inception last season, so that he could work out the issues and have it really consistent for this season. Supposedly it was dropped because it was too difficult, but how does it help things to shelve the program and bring it back? He has had so many consistency issues and he NEEDED a program like that one with more transitions. I'm not sure how to expects to possibly become Olympic Champion if the practice isn't there.

Well, I think there may have been a couple of factors involved in him dropping Inception - due to his illness he couldn't skate it properly, and then... who knows?... maybe Gladiator beckoned? And now he's, so to speak, worked Gladiator out of his system, he was ready to come back to Inception? Who knows? Personally, to be totally honest, I don't really care why he came back to it - so long as he did. I won't say that not seeing it skated to its full potential - I mean with the requisite energy and power - would have been a "lifelong sorrow" - but perhaps it would have come as close as to make little difference. ;) Anyway, I doubt he expects to be Olympic Champion, but I think he's aiming higher this season than "just happy to be here." So long as that doesn't mean his nerves come back... But no! This is a happy day! Inception is back - and today I care for naught else! In fact, let's celebrate:

V/T's SP is a major let down. I think we are all bored with this music after my dear Mao tortured us with it 2 seasons in a row.(And Domnina/Shabalin a year or 2 before). Their LP, I don't know yet. For now I prefer their last year's music but I'll give it a shot.
B/L's music choices are terrible. Charlie Chaplin at least, will be just sad. Not their style and I don't think they can pull it off. They should have gone with some pretty classical music to show off Vera's posture.

V/T need good vehicles so they can win Gold and they are on their way!!

I like their LP, this Jesus is working out for them I think, lol
the SP though is so boring another overused music with not so interesting choreography

Considering they are standing half the program, I think it's a bit early to judge. But the music is so "their", I don't even care how overused it is, lol.

More specific info on Grant Hochstein's LP is provided by the GS article on his Skate Detroit success!

LP Trio Élégiaque, No. 2 by Rachmaninoff, Dumky Trio by Dvořák, and Piano Concerto No. 3 by Rachmaninoff

I don't think it was about her weight at all---it was more about her fitness, and the fact her costumes aren't designed to flatter her. I'm sure she will skate better later in the season, but that FS costume makes her look bigger than she actually is.

Osmond needs a make over; her costumes do not help. The skirt is just wrong and I have no idea how cleopatra is represented in her fs outfit. I bet Canada is wishing Joannie was still skating - is it too late ????

But have skating costumes ever been made with linen? Figure skating costumes have always been shiny by nature....Anyway...maybe we should take this to a costume thread.

the key to egyption is the neckline it can be gold, white, aqua but it needs the neckline which I jsut don't see. Maybe she will go back to Carmen and get a new dress.

Akiko: I like the program though I'm not sure if that's the route she should have gone for this Olympic season. Her biggest concern is standing out and making a statement, especially in the SP. Her last two SPs have been faster paced and more energetic and really grab the crowd and the judges. I love that Akiko is versatile enough to skate to anything and that she can go from doing Kill Bill one year to something light/classical the next...I'm just not sure if it's advisable. That said, the program is lovely. The question is will it help her to stand out next to Yu-Na, Mao and Carolina?

Kaetlyn: Both programs looks like rough cuts, first drafts, etc. It's obvious both programs are still a work in progress. I see the potential in the SP but she was so out of it in the FS, I didn't get any kind of sense of the program itself. It's obvious she was struggling with the jumps. She was completely down on her left side for nearly the entire FS. I'm not particularly worried about her jumps though...it's still early. I do hope they continue to work on both programs. Kaetlyn is still kinda sloppy in her movements. She needs more finish, polish and control. Also, I don't like either dress. :( Both are cut way too short and do nothing for her. Back to the drawing board on those.

I agree mostly, and while we've enjoyed Akiko's forays into more faster paced programs the judges haven't given her very high placements even when done well, IIRC. So if this is her last season, I say let her do whatever she wants and go out happy, medal or not. Same for Dai, he is going to have to dig deep especially if everyone brings it at these Olympics. But you know that is part of the fun. With the exception of maybe ice dance and to a lesser extent pairs, I think these Olympics will have its fair share of surprises  Or at least I hope they do

At Wild Rose, Kaetlyn received these scores

SP:
3f+3t↓, 2z, 2a↓
Score 54.57 = 24.69 TES + 31.88 PCS (7.90 7.50 7.90 8.17 8.00) -2.00 falls

FS:
3f↓, 2a+2t, 3z, 2s, 2f+2t, 3t+2t+2t, 2a↓
Score 107.02 = 46.75 TES + 62.27 PCS (7.75 7.67 7.67 7.83 8.00) -2.00 falls

I can't imagine Kaetlyn would receive such score in international competition---especially the PCS scores.
At Worlds, Kaetlyn got 29.54 in PCS for a clean SP; at Wild Rose she got 30.33 for a SP with two falls and not one clean jumping pass.
At Worlds, Kaetlyn had a rough FS, with two falls and 4 triples landed; her TES/PCS were 53.49/60.60.
At Wild Rose, Katelyn had two falls and landed only 2 triples in the FS yet got a whopping 62.27 in PCS for a program without much expression or interpretation.

I realize that national inflation exists, but these scores are beyond absurd.

This is why we heard Scott Moir mumble in the kiss and cry recently, on hearing his scores "what do these scores mean?" or something to this effect. This scoring system has no integrity really. Sometimes I truly believe that judges know beforehand who will win a given competition, whatever the discipline. But really those TES and PCS marks for Osmond are a JOKE!! So I ask the question "What do these scores really mean?" As far as i can see not much.

lmao at 54 with 2 falls SP

this is what I mean , her PCS is locked as second best or a clean skate will be close to Yuna in Skate Canada
no matter how she will skate her silver medal is guaranteed, 3 Falls in LP and she will probably get 100+ score
Gracie, Julia and the others will be fighting for the bronze medal

It's an inconsequential summer competition. I wouldn't take the scores as indicative of anything she might get in the GP, Olympics or Worlds.

then you need to look again
all of Osmonds competitions on home ice have been inflated wether Nationals, GP or Worlds

While it seems so "accepted" that competitions of a "local" variety on home turf for a championship level skater are going to be inflated, it still IMO begins to contribute to the deterioration in CREDIBILITY of the sport when this happens. And even more so, of the Judges and Judging. It reveals how arbitrary and subjective the scoring system is, how manipulated it still is, and how little the judges seems to be truly evaluating what they are seeing (As opposed to "signaling" or "recognizing" WHO they are watching, based on reputation or expectation.

Not trying to deviate from the thread topic of new programs, but to the extent that people have injected commentary on SCORES being given out for program debuts, at competitions conducted thus far (non Senior B or Grand Prix) not only do I have a lot of hesitation to attribute to much weight to the scores, but I find it disheartening to see the inflation. I feel it erodes credibility and reminds me how disgusted it can make the uberfan feel about the judging system overall.

In a year in which a broader audience may turn their attention to our beloved sport of figure skating, the crowds will vote what they see. Let's see how well that lines up with what the judges are "posting" for scores.
