"Rice says no dice to ice"

"US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice turned down a chance Saturday to show off her ice-skating talents and warm up frosty US-Russian relations during a visit to a rink in Russia. "

And look who's the the picture! Tarasova!

I could see it if she was out of shape but since she is famously in disgustingly good shape, she should have done it. She didn't have to wear sequins or anything.

I'm not a fan of Rice, but I'd say she's right to decline. Secretaries of state do not do that kind of thing. No one asks her boss to grab a megaphone and lead some cheers (I desperately hope).

But I believe that President Putin is quite willing to whip out his Black Belt and demonstrate a few karate moves.

Her job is not as a figure skater, her job is much more important than that.

If I were in her shoes I wouldn't want to go out and skate and have people watching after I'd long ago hung up my skates.

Hmm

From an international relations view, I think it would have been a tad bit smart for her to do it. It would have given the feeling that "Hey! I'm just like you guys! I can have fun and goof around too!" instead of as a government official you must respect and blah. It might even be a step towards bringing the governments together? Who knows!

According to everything I read, the trip to the skaing rink was the only thing that went well on this trip.

Putin basically told Secretary Rice, instead of coming over here lecturing us about human rights you need to be getting your own house in order.

She has no power in Russia and she should know that. Some countries are bold enough NOT to bow to the US form of democracy. Bravo Putin, even though I woldn't trust him.

Joe (me thinks this thread should go into Le Cafe or deleted.)

She actually hasn't been skating competivly since a childhood, so she was right to say no.
