Rika Kihira

I really want to know what her health status is, I hope she is getting better
Also, the layout she issued might not be what she is intending to actually put in the program, it happens all the time with skaters :) I think her practices should be a good indicator of what she'll be doing.

Aw still no lutz. Although I'm feeling they want to focus on the quad sal first before adding the lutz in if her injury isn't 110% healed?
Go Rika!

They're settling for silver or bronze I think. I hope the panel is strict enough to call edges and under rotations.

I don't understand how you can jump 3As, 4Ss and 3Fs without a 3Lz. 3A uses left outside edge. 4S uses left foot entirely for lift. 3F is a similar-ish takeoff, different side of the foot.

Don't get me wrong though, if Rika does land the 4S, that DOES make up for the lack of lutzes, but it's a big if.

While 3A and 3Lz both are off the left outside edge, the pressure on the ankle in both jumps is quite different due to the direction and trajectory of both jumps. It's also different between flip and lutz. Therefore it is very possible that the lutz bothers her while other jumps don't.

All use different muscles....that’s why they are different jumps. Rika has a beautiful lutz, I’m sure she would love to put it in but it hurts her to do it. I don’t get why question the validity of the injury? There’s no way she wouldn’t do lutz just because

Sorry, there might be a misunderstanding. I'm not questioning the validity of the injury. I trust that she would want to get every point she can. I just didn't know how this could work, from my very limited experience. I cannot imagine only this one particular jump hurting, yet her axels being fine. It's so strange to me.

This is partly just my speculation, but you need to turn your ankle pretty far in (pronate) to force the edge before jumping a lutz. If she injured her ankle in a certain way, forcing her foot that way in order to jump may cause pain on takeoff, versus landing where you don’t need to put your foot the same way and you can one property with your knee. Her injury may not have even been from the lutz for the takeoff the hurt, plus this is all just my theory from limited knowledge.

Maybe Rika should skip nationals? Shes the only Japanese lady to make the final and has three triple axels and a quad sal. Without a doubt they would give her a worlds spot, maybe 4CC (but maybe she could use that time to recover too?)

That was a really impressive triple axel / triple toe: impressive power, quick full rotation and beautiful air position. I think instead of the issues with Rika's triple lutz due to injury, when certain imperfections in the jump have been overlooked in the Grand Prix series, the amazing thing is how great Rika has performed in spite of the injury when the issues with her skate last year caused her quite a few problems. I think it shows how well she is coping with limitations and overcoming them psychologically in the quality of her skating skills, performance and in her great consistency in completing her other jumps, spins and step sequences with fine musicality especially the triple axel in the face of evident underscoring, which adds another element of pressure. I wish her the best of success in staying relaxed and focused so she skates great at the Grand Prix Final, and may she heal as quickly as possible hopefully with a long break after Nationals but cross the fingers for sooner.

That 3A-3T its just incredible!!! :O, Go Rika! You can do it!. Does some else noticed how Bradie Tenell skated so close to Rika in her sp run-tru? She even almost get hit by Rika in her first spin for skate to close todo her. That's something should not happen when there are only two girls on the ice, I think Rika felt uncomfortable and lost focus due to that, poor og muy girl, I hope at next practice something like this won't happen again

Twitter was buzzing about it so I watched it and it seemed really unncessary on Bradie's part :/ what is more, there were reports it wasn't the first time she behaved like that... I think Rika lost focus but just for some seconds. TBH Bradie was skating in weird patterns later on too if you ask me. Not so close anymore but she reminded me of some newbie skaters who don't know when a jump or spin is coming just yet, saw it on my rink multiple times.

Edit: Twitter says Rika did 4Sal today! waiting for some footage!
