Russian article on Irina (not good news)

The people at FSU honestly think Joubert deserves higher PCS scores than Buttle and Lambiel, so any consensus thought people of FSU have on PCS scores is automatic ridiculousness. I would only use any poll they have to demonstrate evidence of what is the wrong opinion, sort of like how Marie-Le Gougne would judge a skating event.
I thought we were discussing Irina's illness which skidded into a red dress into rehashing component scores and now Joubert?

SF21 - I thought Brian skated the best performance I've seen of him and it just makes me more confident that it will be an Oly European sweep in the Mens.

Now somebody get back to Irina

Will be interesting to see how it turns out. I would put more stock into what people here think that the FSU crowd. :agree:

Sorry, I wont mention Joubert on here again. Irina Irina Irina, please get well and stick it to those who say your illness will bring you down, let those sour grapers cry about you being overscored when you win gold with a smashing performance.

I think a similar poll should probably be started here. Heck, I'll get on it...
Why? You'll never get 300 responding unless you word it correctly. And then what? The Olys will have begun and Carolina will have won.

If that happens, unless she does it with a total kick-a%s performance I will think Speedy cooked something up. Imagine if that coincides with a "surpise" medal in dance for the returning Fusar Poli/Margalio and his clumsy two-footed skating that was overmarked even in their primes.

You are ok with Joubert. You tied it in with the component scores. I'm a fuddy duddy retired administrator so I would think Joubert deserves his own thread.:ohwell:

Maybe Speedy needs payback from one of the Feds. Am I not a b++tad for thinking so evil?

I just think that the other skaters (and their fans) have other things to worry about than whether the ISU judges are interpreting the rules about PCSs correctly. It is what it is. The judges are consistently rewarding skaters who exhibit strong stroking, solid edging, high technical content and difficult positions, and who bring fire, enthusiasm, elan and spirit to their performances.

Ladies, if you want to get 8.5s, do that!

MM :)

I read a link someone posted about Irina having this Churg-Strauss syndrome or whatever it's called. I felt very sad for Irina's future after reading about the details of that condition. It's beyond me how anyone could think Irina would fake having such an obscure and serious disease as that. And the way those autoimmune diseases work, they wear down your body over time. I'm not all that worried for Irina right now- I agree with those who say her treatment allows her to skate at a high level right now. But after reading about this condition, I really fear for Irina's life after skating- check back in 10 or 15 years and see how much she's been faking this. Poor girl.

Irina has to be on heavy doses of prednisone while she's competing, just to stay in remission from her symptoms. Prednisone taken in large doses over long periods has bad effects on the body, including osteoporosis, and leaves the body open to infection. She probably picked up the flu bug while traveling to and from the GPF. She seemed to have recovered well enough to win Europeans, but apparently became sick again after Euros was over.

Her doctors have said that the stress of competition causes her symptoms to reappear, which means she has to take even heavier doses of medication. I think Irina's goal is to compete at Torino, but now I can't help wondering if she will go on to Worlds, or call it a day when the Olympics are over.

Havanamesa and JanJam, you are making fools of yourselves.

Hmm... since when did anyone automatically become a fool just because s/he isn't that gullible, or simply has a different view from the majority? This reminds me very much of Copernicus who was condemned for claiming that the earth was round -- just because the church (of all groups!) said it wasn't so and everyone was too gullible to believe the church's claims.

I never said that I wish that something bad would happen to Irina -- my position, to this day, is that I am NOT convinced that she's really sick, especially with the way she's skating. If the day comes that I can see for myself that she really is sick, then I'll be convinced. It's as simple as that.

I find it incredible how simply having a different position from other posters should bother people here so much, particularly in this forum where people claim to be more "objective" than those in other forums and are supposedly not consumed by fandom. Is it because many posters in this forum are so bigoted as to think that their word is the absolute voice of truth and wisdom? For people who claim to be intelligent, the words I read here certainly don't reflect the quality of keeping an open mind.

Irina is skating stronger than ANYONE in her group and is a lock for gold, and she and the ISU obviously don't care what anyone else thinks -- so what does getting upset at and crucifying the poster-who-doesn't-share-everyone-else's- opinion accomplish, when Irina and her fans will obviously get what they want anyway (i.e., Irina winning the gold)? Are people here so stupid as to think that if someone like me says Irina is not really sick, that the ISU will listen, and that my small voice will change the fact that she's going to receive the gold medal? I thought that posters here had more brains than that! Obviously, I thought wrong, and realize now that all along, I've possessed the same gullibility I see in many posters here, because for the longest time, I believed that people here knew what they were talking about.

I know EXACTLY where you coming from, and I feel you. Not the best feeling to be ganged up on...definitely not.

I understand why some people might be skeptical about Irina's illness. I personally disagree with these posters, but they've their right to their opinion.

That said, I think it was that you posted that in a pro-Irina thread that set everyone off edge. That, and feathers were made to be ruffled by those comments. jmo

Thanks. (And I have seen for myself how people have ganged up on you, and how things -- I thought --had gotten better around here. Obviously, I was just looking through rose-colored lenses and simply had unrealistically high expectations about the current quality of "thinking" going on among many posters here.)

Since you think differently from most people here, I do hope you keep posting, as brain activity in this forum will continue to stagnate if people continue to want to think alike.

According to you "I thought - had gotten better around here."Seems you have been a member of GS in the past. Would you care to list your previous user name here?

I know when Sasha did not win 2002 there were a couple of voiciferous posters who were screaming about Sarah's win and how it should not have been. They left GS, changed their usernames and come back to GS from time to time mostly to put down the GS Forum. Care to give us your former user names since you admit you thought things had gotten better around here?

Aside from all this. I must warn everyone, any condescending remarks on posters, individually or collectively may well be reason for banning if there is no redeeming rationale in such posts.

Havanamesa1, if Irina's mother were to die during Olympics, would just the death certificate be enough for you, or would you have to see the corpse? Just checking.

If having some common decency and giving a crap about someone's serious health condition = mental stagnation...I'm all for it.

Hi Joe. No, I'm not a former user (never signed up in the past), but I visited for a relatively long time before I signed up. The "general" orientation of the forum (i.e., not devoted to a particular skater) is one feature I've found attractive. Some posters' familiarity with skating history has also been another impressive item.

As far as preferences go, I don't hate Sasha ('extremely disappointed' would be the more appropriate description, as I had high hopes for her in the past) and I've given up on her, so as far as I'm concerned, it'll be a miracle if she ever skates clean (to me, she'll forever be Miss Mistake). I also don't like Irina and my personal opinion is that she has the ugliest skating of all skaters at her level and is the most overrated, but I don't know her enough to hate her and to wish her to die, but I'm tired of her gimmicks. As far as Kwan goes, with her dark, ugly music this year, she obviously hasn't learned from the shrieking child who beat her at Nagano. And by planning only 6 triples in Torino, she obviously hasn't learned from the Huge winner who beat her at SLC. I also think it's her fault that there's so much pressure on her to play catch up as far as CoP goes. Given her experience and skills, however, I think she remains a strong contender for a medal (I doubt that Meissner will even enter the top ten) and could give US Nats' longest bridesmaid a run for her money.

OK Havanamesa - I've got the drift of your likes and dislikes and your use of tabloid descriptions Sometimes these descriptions are mistaken by others and cause a rumble and nasty comments back and forth. This disrupts the flow of the GS Forum. We like to think that we are serious posters here.

Joe
