Russian Nationals, Jan. 4-7, 2008

nothing surprising about this kind of attitude of his. No?

Yes, I think that would be rather surprising, since he has never been one to want to miss out on events, whether minor or major. If he is wanting to not be there, there is reason for it other than attitude.

Ah, I thought there would not be any more descriptions, and went away! I am so glad to have been wrong! lol I was especially eager to see what Voronov did ;). Not disappointed at all lol.

Thank you, Ximena, Alex, and Hsuhs.

Ah, now I can relax and look all of it over more closely in my notes. And the results are up on the Russian site, too! :)

Of course, everything depends on what happens Sunday, but it looks as if Dobrin is in trouble. Griazev usually rises to his best efforts at Nationals, of course, so we'll see what happens there, but Voronov's performance during the GP series made a big impression on me; I am very happy with what Aleksei Urmanov has accomplished with him, and I think it is not too soon to say that Voronov is really ready now, to compete with seniors at the major international events.

They used to be called, "Little Alexei" (Yagudin), "Big Alexei" (Urmanov) and "Papa Alexei" (Mishin). Now it looks as if Mishin's former pupil has become a coach with whom to be reckoned, and I am very glad. Here's to you, "Big Alexei"!

He always looks pissed off. Maybe he has some deep philosophical reasons for that. I don't know, b/c I don't know the guy.

Well, my bet for the 2nd place is on Lutai.... Griazev has the bad habit of bombing programs... Let's see...

In dance, the russians have 3 places for Euros.. One for K/N for sure. Then? It is really interesting. 1st question: will DomShabs go? and 2nd question: who will be the 3rd (or 2nd and 3rd) couple? I've no idea

In ladies , it's even more complicated. Will Martinova be at Euros? Well, russian figure skating ladies seem worse than ever, I'm afraid...

No one has any explanation as to why Lutai's score was upgraded by almost 4 points. I guess we'll have to see the protocol to find out why.

I've tried checking a couple of Russian forums as well, and people seem to be confused by the mystery of Lutai's elevating score there as well. I guess it's a wait till the protocols kind of thing.

And it's not like a typo because it's not 4 points, it's 3.79. Maybe an element wasn't count? A level?

That's all I can think of, Ximena, is that somehow a spin or something hadn't gotten counted and they called it to attention. It does make more sense, as he deserves to be ahead of Griazev by more than half a point.

Neither Uspensky skated particularly well. Vladimir landed only a 2A, he was slow, and his spins and footwork were blah. Alexander fell on his quad attempt (underrotated) and there was no combo.

Vladimir landed 3axel, not double. Combo 3lutz with 3toeloop was very good (lutz was extremely high), 3flip was OK. His spins and steps are not the best but he improved a lot. Definitely his yesterday's performance doesn't deserve such criticism.

It's been confirmed on FSU that one of Lutai's spins that was level 4 was counted originally.

About Lutai's score: it was reported on another board that a spin level was changed and the score for the spin was incorrectly reported as zero, hence the correction. So the higher score is correct.
