Sasha ... a question mark for Worlds?

Well, if katy Taylor has her boot problem all fixed and has been practicing, I'd much rather see her go than Sasha.

Considering what the press will do to Sasha if she goes to Worlds, and doesn't win, then I couldn't blame Sasha if she decided to skip it.

once again- who cares what the press thinks? If Cohen really is hung up on how the press perceives her, she'll NEVER be a champion- mark my words. As for the people, the skating speaks for itself, so they can decide whether they really like her or not.

Sasha's already a champion. She may never win worlds or Olympics but she has a Grand prix final championship and a national championship. She also has silvers up the wazzu. Saying she'll never be a champion is just stupid semantics. language such as this is the reason people question why the heck you post at Sasha fans.

Sasha may never be able to handle pressure of expectations but that isn't the end all that ends all. She's not the greatest competitor but she is one of the figure skating greats of her generation.

Now if Sasha competing at worlds is so heavily in doubt (That the press, certain internet users and Katy know about it-as early as they did). I will be mad as heck at USFSA. They released their world team roster just yesterday. They didn't need to release such a statement at all considering the team was more or less named already.

Well, the fact is she's not a world champion or an Olympic champion. This doesn't mean she's not accomplished, though- you don't have to be a champion to be accomplished. That's what you fans don't seem to quite get when comments like these are made. Silver is by no means a failure, but the fact remains that with the exception of 2006 Nats, she hasn't been able to put two and two together when the Moment of Truth has arrived.

About the Sashafans thing- I go to fan-specific boards for the news- they often get news on the skaters before GS, FSU, etc. do.

ITA. And if the worlds rating going down, she can't be blamed for. (IMFO, this was one of reasons she withdrawn from SA. After MK dropped out.)

That said, I'm not surprised at all if she is injured. Check my posts very earlier on in the season, she was expected by some of FS experts early in the season that she would get herself injured like some of Russian skaters, given the way she went through her fast weight lose dieting......But I diddn't expect this soon, I was thinking about may be next season (Both Yagudin and Plushen were reported injuries after the 2002 season).

I think the demize of Sasha has been grosly over exagerated. I can't imagine her losing out on this unique opportunity of not going for a gold medal. It will not be that easy next year with the Asian Invasion.

Sasha has waited a long time for this. I hope she gets there and wins it.

I could see Sasha skipping Worlds because the injury is too bad to risk a QR, SP and FS. She might bomb the QR and put herself out of contention for gold, which, let's face it, is the only one she wants.

She might also be expecting a lucrative offer from SOI and doesn't want to risk damaging her commercial value. Being a 3-time World silver medalist isn't what she's aiming for.

While on the talk show circuit, she seems to have become interested in a Hollywood career. Maybe she just doesn't want the grind of continuing in FS.

All of the above thoughts may be going through her mind. I guess we'll find out for sure in about a week if she's going, and [if she goes] in another week, the color of the medal (if any).

Well, it all depends on how much she really want this World title. How much this title will help her future in pro skating and other career advantures.....IMO, I doubt it will help much more than the OSM.

With OGM was not an American, after the initial shocking from the media (which had tried to build her up for the Gold after she winning the SP), she was treated like an OGM by medias....She is now the only reignning American Olympics medalist in ladies, whatever deals she could've secured she might already secure (I believe she lost a few of those contracts that solely based on contengent that she won the OGM). And with her recent storm interviews with medias and Holywood, whatever future offers in pending most likely would not depend on her WC title......And frankly, risking not winning the WC (with both SA and IS out) could actually harm on finally sealing these deals. IMO.

chuckm- I agree. I think she wants the pampered life, all made out for her type of lifestyle. And it's hers for the taking. But she shouldn't be too shocked when she doesn't become the next Julia Roberts. After all, Tara Lipinski, being an OGM, can't even get C or D roles...(or she's turning them down in hopes that someone will see her for something else other than her medal?). But it's her decision. Personally, I think she'll be better off as a show skater. She may like it more than Tara did.

Chuckum - Good rationale. The thing is just how badly does she want a gold medal at Worlds since there will never be one at the Olympics. She will not have such an opportunity for gold next year and I think her eligible career will be over after Calgary.

However, I agree with you, she has always sought the glamor side of skating more than the work ethic, and her penchant for being in the spotlight has always been evident. It just may be that she will follow the "Show" skating of SOI with her silver credentials. She will have lots of success there.

As for movies:

If she learns how to really act a la Streep, well definitiely; if not will she have talent in other areas a la Roberts? It's a long stretch for that field. They made skating movies for Sonia Henie and no one else.

I'm not gonna believe it until it's confirmed; I wouldn't be surprised if the Canadian newspapers put that out to hype their girl Joannie who could win if Sasha pulls out! Not like I don't like Joannie, I do, but I like Sasha more. ;)

I think Sasha will go. And there's a good chance she'll win. I just wish she didn't focus so much on the media stuff after the Olympics and got back to preparing. ;)

ITA. An Olympic silver medal, a US nationals title, 2 world silver medals, a GPF title- is a very good list of accomplishments for anybody. Sasha is no exception.

I am not a Sasha fan but I have followed her career since the 2000 US nationals when she finished second to Michelle Kwan. She has had her problems at key moments, but I have seen her gradually improve over the years. She was expected to be an instant success/champion, based on talent alone. However, she has a different personality- one that seems to learn gradually, from every experience. In 2005 (worlds) I was struck by how far she had come. She made a few mistakes in her LP but she fought through it and won the silver. In the 2006 Olympics again, she had some problems at the beginning of her LP but she never gave up.She fought through till the end and won a silver again. She did win the US championship in Jan. with a respectable LP performance.

Since the beginning of this season, from her comments, I had a feeling that she had really matured in her thinking. You see that in the way she has approached her skating- the process, not the destination.

I think the Oly experience is a confidence builder for her. Her next step would be to skate two clean (or nearly clean) performances at worlds and win a world title. It could happen in Calgary, or it could happen later. She is young enough to go to the next Olympics. IMO she will continue to learn and grow until she feels fulfilled in her career.

The fact that Sasha has been doing the show biz circuit with great relish shows how much training she is not doing. Now, maybe that's partially because she is injured, but it does show a lack of motivation. Her entire skating LIFE was geared to her winning the OGM in 2006. Winning Worlds doesn't mean as much to her now as it did in 2004 or 2005.

After all, Sarah Hughes, who never won a National or World or GPF title, was so exhausted from her round of parties that she sat out Worlds 2002 (but of course she had the OGM). If Sasha is on the brink of snagging a big deal (like SOI), maybe eligible titles have lost their luster.

Well, just to add a little fuel to the fire ... over at another board someone has posted that she hasn't been spotted much at the rink where she usually trains.
Hmmmm?

Also remember Sasha is like, 45 minutes from Hollywood. It's not a big deal to go out and do all those party-things. She went back to training right after all that junk was done. She's been getting more attention than Sarah BECAUSE Sasha lives out here in Los Angeles. No big deal. I think it's good she got a bit of a break anyway; she was somewhat injured anyway, right? Maybe some time away is just what she needed to get back into the groove. I know that happens with me and spring break in school. ;)

It's hard to keep that youthful competitive fire burning year after year as you mature.

When you are 12, there is nothing in the world so important as winning that Little League title.

When you are 21, not so much.
