SC photo shoot pictures- from "V" Magazine

How do you even walk in those shoes that Sasha has on in the pic? I wouldn't walk in heels myself. I have too big of calves already:laugh:

Windspirit, well, I don't dare touch that with a ten-foot pole!
What I find funny, though, is the fact that women are required to wear skirts (which, as we know, fly up more often than not), and -- correct me if I'm wrong -- can't wear black tights under them (like that: http://www.iwsa.org/kwan.jpg ). Not to mention regular pants (like men), which would make the crotch ogling much harder. Men, on the other hand, can't show their legs, or even wear tights.
I agree that this is the dilemma that figure skating has always faced. Is it a sport or a peep show? What's really funny is the ISU rule that ladies costumes must be "appropriate to an athletic contest." :rolleye: When Debbi Thomas wanted to skate in just such a costume, the ISU said, hey wait a minute, where's your flippy skirt?

Here's another picture of Michelle looking incredibly sexy and athletic, this one in a Y-spin. (Copy and paste the url into your address bar.)

Registered: I apologize for teeing off on you last night. That was uncalled for on my part. You are protective of your gal Sasha just as I am of my gal Michelle. Sorry.

This is the first I've posted on this thread, although I posted on the one on FSU about these pictures.

Firstly, I think some people should stop criticising Sasha like this. Some of you are making her out to be some kind of porn star, when she clearly isn't. None of those pictures show any more than any skating dress shows, and most of the pictures cover more up. Is she in provocative poses? Some people may see that for a couple of them, yes. So what? She's a young woman, NOT a child. She's beautiful and in terrific shape, so if someone wants her to model for a fashion magazine, she's perfectly entitled to say yes, especially as she enjoys modelling.

Some people have been going on about the shoes and some of the outfits, insinuating the connotations of the heels in the first picture. Yes, maybe some people will see the heels and think of porn or whatever. But maybe the heels were worn to give the impression of more height. Or maybe because heels emphasize leg muscle/tone. Or maybe to make her appear powerful. I'm not being naive - maybe they were chosen for the sex connotation. The point is, nobody knows, so it's ridiculous to jump on Sasha and the photographer as being pornographic. And the rest of the outfits are just the same. None of them are excessively revealing, certainly not more than the skating dresses she has to wear.

I think some people seem to forget that Sasha Cohen is an ATHLETE. She's a sportsperson at the top of her game. Because of the athleticism she trains for, her body is muscular and strong, and she has as much right as anybody else to show it off.

As for the photos themselves, they are not designed to appeal to children. If they were, they would be in a magazine aimed at children. They are fashion photographs, likely designed to be cutting-edge, dramatic, different, a bit edgy. They show many sides to Sasha - strength, power, grace, beauty, determination, authority, etc etc. The one leaning over the bar shows an introspective side to her aswell. I'm sure all these things are aspects to her personality that are being displayed through art. But through all of these pictures, I can't see any of them that are anywhere near as overtly sexual as a lot of singers etc pose for, and those singers are far more in the public eye that Sasha.

So if Sasha is asked to do a photo-shoot with these ideas in mind, that they would show her muscle tone and strength (physical and mental) aswell as an aesthetic side to her, why should she refuse if she wants to do it? Because she's Sasha Cohen, figure skater? There's always been the image of a figure skater as a perfect little ice princess, someone who does no wrong and is 100% wholesome and balletic. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just a little unrealistic sometimes. Skaters are human beings. They can train for years and years to hit perfect positions and to be graceful and delicate, but that doesn't change the fact that they are real people with the same feelings as everyone else. And just because she's a skater, she shouldn't be made to pretend she doesn't have them.

Is Sasha a role model for kids? Maybe, yes. Why? Probably because of her skating talent, determination, and pretty positions. Doing some artsy photographs does not change what she is as a skater. But she didn't ask to be a role model. She took up a sport as a child and excelled in it. She moved up through the ranks and will be challenging for a World medal this year. Of course, this puts her in the public eye (although that's limited compared to someone like Britney Spears), and she will no doubt conduct herself as well as ever. But just because she's a top athlete, she shouldn't be denied the opportunity, or the RIGHT, to explore her own identity just like everyone else does. I just think some of the criticism of her is going way over the top.

JMO.

Nah, admit it, Mathman, it's all about Sasha's star power. LOL!

Don't worry, I don't hold grudges. There's one good thing about this thread -- it shows that people take their favorite skaters seriously, no doubt about it.
:)

As someone who is around the same age as Sasha (not relevant but I'm also not a Sasha fan), I would like to say that I see nothing wrong with these photos at all....except for the one where she is showing her stomach...I personally thought her ribs/abs/stomach looked strange.

The way I see it...Sasha wanted to do something a little hip and artsy, and I see that the photos were a bit of the hip and artsy side and were a little different. I love the way the photographer lit the photos...very good technique with the shadows and light.

The point is that Sasha probably had a blast wearing all those great dresses that almost nobody could afford or fit into and do all those poses for the magazine. If there is a tint of sexuality in it, then what's the big deal? The girl is 19, she can't stay a baby forever. I never understood why people are so afraid of sex...IMO sex shouldn't be shielded from people, instead people need to be more educated about it IMO.

Personally, my fave photo is the one where she is bent over showing off her fantastic flexibility and wearing those very stylish but impossible to walk in high heels.

Why is Sasha even modeling anyway? Most models have legs taller than Sasha's entire body. She has stubby little arms and legs, little hands with stubby little fingers, a tiny little round face, with little baby features. She simply does not pull the look off and she's not even all that well known. How did she wind up in V?

It almost seems like the changing of the guard. A lot of the mulit-page topics these days are about Sasha. She is definitely on her way up.

Who says you have to have the same feature for all of the minds behind the cameras. She looked great through the eyes of the photographer and staff of V magazine that choose these pics for the lay out. This goes to show everyone that you don't have to look a certain way for a photo shoot.
Remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What looks dull to you may look inviting to someone else.
Yes RED DOG you have really started something here.
I think she is pretty well known. Look at all the replies and think about the new fans Sasha is getting from this.

Why was she modeling and how did she end up in V? She was asked! :D

Zhenya, I'm getting the feeling you have a problem with small people and petite features. Perhaps you should confront the problem instead of bashing the skater. Just a thought. If you can get to the root of your discomfort, you might find relief.

Peach I:love: it:laugh:
If Sasha can model then there is hope for my petite features too.

If you were 19 years old and someone offered you an opportunity to model, wouldn't you do it? Shouldn't she enjoy every opportunity that comes her way? Who knows how long she will be in demand... I'm not wild about the actual photos, but I'm sure she enjoyed the experience.

Anyhow, why do models ALWAYS have to be tall and emaciated? Sasha's pretty just as she is, and there are many types of beauties.

Of course there are going to be a lot of replies here this is a figure skating board after all. If V wanted to do a photo shoot with a figure skater for the novelty of it, why couldn't they use one of the lady ice dancers like Tanith Belbin, someone who actually has something close to a "model's body"?

SC have signed with Wilhelmina modeling agency, so she IS a model. Though too petit to work the runway, she can model for fashion magazines, like she did for "Seventeen" and now for "V."

Sorry, "Zhenya's Girl," but looks like mag. editors and photographers don't share your view on Sasha, as if she's a female version of Hunchback of Notre Dame. They take her for what she is -- beautiful and talented young lady.

Regarding Tanith Belbin, she does some kind of modeling too, I believe, at least she used to in the past.

Okay Zgirl
Please tell us all what a models body is suppose to look. Let me guess first. Tall, Skinny, clear skin, long fingers and does not do sports for a living. Did I leave out anything Zgirl.
By the way what makes you the smart one in this subject.
Zgirl I bet when you were little you went to sign up to be a model and
for some reason only you know they would not take you. Now you are jealous cause you could of been in this very position in V magazine. I am I close? Just remember times have changed. Anything is possible. I suppose you want our presidents to always be a man in the future too?:rolleye:

My goodness, Serenity, where did that come from?
I understand your point but isn't that a little strong? Let's just all calm down before someone really loses their cool. OK?
:rolleye:
Grgranny, the peacemaker.

Serenity, PML!!! Um, let's see....if we're getting harsh you left out coke snorting and heroine injecting, but I guess those fall under the realm of skinny. They just never tell you how they stay so skinny.

GrGranny, you've stumbled upon a bitter rivalry that only those two know the entire history of, that's why it got so heated.
