So-Youn Park

I think her not having a fixated jump layout in her programs and the fact that she went back to her old FS really set her back a lot in terms of developing assurance and consistency. I do feel like she may also be experiencing the last off-set consequences of puberty too. I don't want to sound insensitive but she looks more filled in in some areas. Still, she seem mentally unprepared too. I think she needs some time away from Korea and do some training with foreign coaches, like what JSF did with Miyu.

I do still see her as a vital member of team Korea. So far, the majority the younger age-eligible skaters (minus Dabin) are too unstable. They are good skaters, but they are more unpredictable and have lower tech levels. Soyoun is quite lucky actually I don't like caving in to this reason but it is what it is

I think one of her problem is that her FP layout is very Zayak risky. If she doubles her planned 3T ending, she is really vulnerable to violate Zayak rule, she knows it and it shows. Is she very bad Looper? She does 3Lz-2t-2l, right? if she changes it to -2l-2l(or just forget about three jump combination and do 3Lz-2L if she is not confident of getting consistent solo 3L), she doesn't need to worry about 3T Zayak. She needs some layout that no matter how she pops or doubles it won't affect the rest of jumps. She is not the most mentally tough skater and it's always good to have one less thing to worry. Right now, after she doubles the first -3T, it shows that her head is exploding with worries of 'what if I double next jump as well?' while she approaches the next -3T combination, and she often decides not to do it at all.
And maybe she could try -1L-3S combination because she has great 3S. Even if she doubles the -3S, -2S is still better than 2T so I don't see downside.

You're right. Her layout is pretty risky right now, especially since she is no longer able to consistently land a 3-3.

But actually I'm more worried about the two 3Lzs. She faced this problem in Worlds and COC (coincidentally both were in China!). Since the first 3Lz was not a combo, the second one has to be a combo, but if she falls or steps out of the second 3Lz, then she'll get the extra REP deduction, which is very costly. The 3Lz in the second part of the program comes with a 2T-2Lo, but she put her hand down at Worlds on the lutz and had a slightly iffy landing at COC, which forced her to do 1T-1Lo both times. I think she should either have both lutzes in the second half with the combo being first, or put the combo in the first half and the solo in the second half, which would make it nearly the same jump layout as Satoko Miyahara's. Yes, the second half bonus is good to have, but So Youn is very inconsistent so this strategy is unreliable at the moment.

I think she should switch back to her layout from the beginning of last season where she did a 3S-2T-2Lo instead of a 3Lz at the top of it. Her Lz has been very inconsistent this season - especially in that combination.

OMG Soyoun did a CLEAN ROMEO AND JULIET even with a tano on her 3-2-2 combo.
I feel like having a heart attack right now.......

After yesterday's horrrible SP, I was thinking to myself, "Oh wow. I'm probably never going to see a clean program from her ever again."

But wow! She definitely proved me wrong! If she can do what she did today consistently from now on, I can definitely see a high placement at Pyeongchang 2018. There are still 2 years till the Olympics. That's more than enough time to come back from her slump. :agree:

Thank you SY for making my day!

Soyoun's condition is not good this season (based on my observation at SA practice). May due to injury, last bit of puberty what not.. She can do a pretty decent loop now, actually 3loop has becoming her stronger jumps. her 3S is deteriorated, can not manage a -3T.Her lz and F are about the same as before.maybe lz is a little better. that is why they changed her lay-out to 2 2A-3T combo and went back to last years program. She was perhaps ambitious during last summer training and maybe has a better condition back then.
her jumps seems off-axis at times. possible still dealing with last bit of puberty or some sorta body growth/change/injury.
If Soyoun has better condition, I believe she will be more consistent.

So happy to see a clean skate from Soyoun! :hap85: This was much better than her national FS. Her jumps are huge and cover lots of ice. It's nice to see her hit the loop so often this season as it was giving her trouble last season. Just hope she doesn't mess up her SP so badly like yesterday at 4CC! Kinda miss her old R&J dress though :P

Gosh, it's really like a roller coaster ride with her, isn't it? Yuna spoiled me so much with her nerve of steel and super consistency so it's a bit too exhausting to be a fan of Soyoun for me, but just about when I really lower my expectation on her..... Bam! She goes clean. And I'm not complaining at all! Keep going, Soyoun!!:hap10:

I don't want to be greedy, but I can't help but really, really wish her to clean her Black Orpheus SP. I absolutely love the choreography for that program and wish she can perform it perfectly!

We'll see at 4CC. Although she has broken our hearts many, many times, our patience has paid off to an extent.

Glad to see a clean program again from So Youn. Lovely jumps! She has the classical style that I really enjoy. But it will be great if she can put more speed to her skating.

I hope she can be competitive again with the top tier skaters.

When Hailey Shin reported that So Youn was completely clean, I was first like "That's impossible." But I just watched the video and I am so happy for her! There's that clean program that all us So Youn fans were looking for. I think she got a lot slower over the last few years (she seemed much slower here than 2014 Worlds) but the jumps are still big and gorgeous when she is doing well. The first 2A-3T is definitley a +3 in my opinion and it's impressive to be doing a 3S at the end of the program before the spin and with an ina bauer entry.

I am disappointed with the scoring a bit (judges only gave her 54 in PCS at a national event) but it is still a good showing for her. Hopefully she can repeat clean performances at 4CC and Worlds!
