Spanish Championships Short Dance: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCr2LzVdHXk

Sofía and Asaf finished 2nd out of 4 in the Short Dance, with a score of 70.35.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread about their programme:

Well, the cheers that Sofía VAL / Asaf KAZIMOV (MAD) got when they were introduced were as big as Olivia and Tim got.

Out of sync on towards the end of the Twizzles.

But otherwise, I couldn't spot any issues. They looked great!

Big hug when they finished.

Well, if the audience reaction when they finished is anything to go by, they're going ahead of Olivia and Tim. They loved it!!! We even had an air horn going off!

They go into 2nd position. But 9.40 points behind Olivia and Tim. 😲

That's not right. I wouldn't have imagined that big a difference in scores.

The camera didn't go down to the results area until after the scores came up on screen. But they and Sara were very happy!

:cheer: WELL DONE SOFÍA AND ASAF!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Sofía and Asaf are currently 9.40 points behind 1st position, Olivia Sophie SMART / Tim DIECK (CAT), and 10.58 points ahead of 3rd position, Philomene SABOURIN / Raul BERMEJO GUTIERREZ (MAD).

We have to be realistic about this - with the size of the gaps either side of them after the Short, Sofía and Asaf are not going to move out of 2nd position. However, this gives them free reign to just go all out and try to win the Free.

Oh, I hope they do!

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Senior Free Dance is due to start at 12:47:15 CET (11:47:15 GMT / 14:47:15 MSK). So 4 hours from now.

And that is as much as I can tell you, because neither the Time Schedule PDF nor the livescoring page are working.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before them withdraws.

Sofía and Asaf finished 2nd out of 4 in the FD, with a score of 105.95. This meant that they remained in 2nd position overall, with a score of 176.30.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread when they were being introduced:

After that amazing performance from their team-mates, now for my kids.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST SOFÍA AND ASAF!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

And here is what I wrote about their programme:

Ach, Asaf nearly fell during the Twizzles in the second half. Too close to the boards. But the audience gave encouragement.

But, otherwise, I didn't spot any issues.

You know, although the audience was showing a lot of support, it wasn't as much as their team-mates before them got. But, that is probably because Sofía and Asaf's music was more subdued, and didn't really allow for audience participation like Philomene and Raul's did.

They go into the lead of both FD and overall.

:cheer: WELL DONE SOFÍA AND ASAF!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Can I just take this opportunity to correct myself? It wasn't the Twizzles that Asaf nearly fell on, as they were early on in the programme. I think it was the Midline Step Sequence. I saw them spinning around, and in the heat of the moment my brain automatically went "Twizzles"! :rolleye:

Sofía and Asaf finished the Free Dance 19.82 points behind 1st position, Olivia Sophie SMART / Tim DIECK (CAT), and 6.96 points ahead of 3rd position, Philomene SABOURIN / Raul BERMEJO GUTIERREZ (MAD).

Overall, Sofía and Asaf finished 29.22 points behind 1st position, Smart / Diaz, and 14.27 points ahead of 3rd position, Sabourin / Bermejo.

I realise that I am biased. But, I can't understand how Sofía and Asaf were so far behind Olivia and Tim in both segments.

Well, if this is going to be what it is like, Sofía and Asaf had better hope that Olivia and Tim can earn Spain a second slot at Euros and Worlds. Because, it is starting to look very unlikely that Sofía and Asaf will ever be able to go through being Spanish Champions. It was already clear from what happened at last year's Nationals as to which partnership the powers that be in Spain prefer, but the gulf in the scores this year make it even more obvious. And it is not the same partnership as who the audience (or I) prefer.

I'm sorry for sounding bitter. But this blatent favouritism is not fair.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Given the scores at Nationals, it will not come as a surprise that Olivia Sophie SMART / Tim DIECK (CAT) got selected for the European Championships.

HOWEVER, Sofía and Asaf have instead got the call up for the Universiade, which will be held this coming week. And they will be joined by their team-mates Philomene SABOURIN / Raul BERMEJO GUTIERREZ (MAD).

So they will get to compete at a Major Championship this season after all!!! :cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

Hello Caro and silent readers!
Sorry I left you alone for so long... But I'm back, at least for today. And maybe tomorrow.
Yes, it was a pity the big difference at nationals with Olivia & Tim.
I took me a while to be at peace with the score difference and the spots at Euros and Worlds, but I have no problem accepting it because as soon as I saw Olivia&Tim's free program at the begining of the season, I realized they were at another level (what a very good music & choreo can do to improve a team quality!).

As you said, there is a good part:
- Sofia & Asaf are at the Universiada (1st position after the rhythm dance!)
- They are with Philo&Raul, a new spanish team that I LOVE: don´t miss them, still a work in progress (with a lot of work to do), but they are special, very expresive and fun to watch, not funny, just fun: Raul is a showman and Philo is catching up. They also train at SK in Madrid and took risks with their FD, I really love the music - C.Tangana- (not the mix or the choreo, to be honest, but that's for another day). I don´t think this music is for their actual level, but they are defending it like hell (can I say that?).
- The other good part is that Olivia &Tim seem to be reciving score enough to get 2 (maybe even 3?) spots at Euros for next season and also the oportunity of 2 spots at worlds. Am I too ambitious? Nah, just hopefull. And cheering for all of them :cheer:

Videos:

Sofia&Asaf RD Universiada 2024 Score 66,42 1st position
Philo&Raúl RD Universiada 2024 Score 52,62 8th position ( please, don´t be angry, I post here this video just for this competition ).

Yesterday I congratulated Sofia and Asaf on winning the rhythm dance and was for a short moment very confused when Asaf answered in German 😂 then I turned to Wikipedia and read that he and his family moved from Russia to Dortmund when he was 12 and he skated for Germany for several years 😅 it's a small world I guess

Universiade Short Dance: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxYD-Thzh-4

Sofía and Asaf finished 1st out of 11 in the Short Dance, with a score of 66.42.

I was concentrating on the Volvo Open Cup. However, during the break between the Junior Ladies and the Junior Men, I wound the Universiade stream back and watched both the Group 2 Warm-Up and Sofía and Asaf's programme. And wrote a post containing my thoughts on how they got on in both.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

Mmmmm. The camera can't keep up with the presentation of the skaters. So we completely missed seeing Sofía and Asaf waving to the audience.

Eeek. The two Spanish partnerships coached by Sara, Kirill and Ksenia nearly collided at the end of the section where Philomene and Raul were being focussed on.

When it was Sofía and Asaf's turn to be focussed on, they were doing a section of their programme. And it looked good!

Next few times we saw Sofía and Asaf, they were just moving around the ice together, mostly holding hands.

Oops! The rinkside announcer said the Warm-Up was over with 1 minute to go, and then had to correct himself. It's a pity PJ is in the commentary box. She would never have made that mistake!

Just before the end of the Warm-Up, Sofía went hurrying away on her own, and the camera followed her. (You can't blame the camera operator for doing so - she's gorgeous!)

They showed a zoomed in shot of Sara at the end of the Warm-Up, as Philomena and Raul are the first to skate.

CaroLiza_fan

And here is what I wrote about their programme:

I like the choreography at the start. Very slick.

Out of sync on Twizzles. Or maybe Sofía's pony tail flying around made it look like they were. :p

But after that, I didn't spot any possible issues. It all looked good to me! ;)

Sara, Sofía and Asaf all look very happy when we saw them waiting for the scores.

They go into the lead.

Big smiles all round.

:cheer: WELL DONE SOFÍA AND ASAF!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Sofía and Asaf are currently 0.58 points ahead of 2nd position, Giulia Isabella PAOLINO / Andrea TUBA (ITA), and 1.25 points ahead of 3rd position, Lou TERREAUX / Noé PERRON (FRA).

3.78 points further back of Terreaux / Perron are Mariia PINCHUK / Mykyta POGORIELOV (UKR) in 4th position, 4.45 points behind Sofía and Asaf.

Although it is a great achievement that they won the Short, Sofía and Asaf cannot rest in their laurels as all of the Top 3 are very close together. And then there is the additional complication of the Ukrainians poised in 4th position ready to take advantage if any of the Top 3 make mistakes.

So, if they are to win this, Sofía and Asaf need to make sure they don't make any mistakes and instead have a good Free Dance.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Senior Free Dance is due to start at 19:45:00 CET (18:45:00 GMT / 21:45:00 MSK). So 10 hours from now.

Sofía and Asaf will be the 11th and final partnership to start. So, fourth and final partnership to go in Group 3 (and fouth partnership to go after the resurfacing).

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 21:05:50 CET (20:05:50 GMT / 23:05:50 MSK). So 11h 20m from now.

Sofía and Asaf are due to start at 21:34:50 CET (20:34:50 GMT / 23:34:50 MSK). So 11h 50m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before them withdraws.

Yeah, he is not only a pretty face in an skater body, the boy has a brain! He speaks German, Russian (I guess), English and, after 3 years living in Spain, his Spanish is quite good too. I heard that he was studing at the university in Spain, so I thought his Spanish should be something decent, but I had never heard him speak in Spanish until last week in this video RTVE SK Academy (not accesible outside Spain, sorry).
He's got an intense 25 years life (not yet!).

Hello Caro and silent readers!

Yeah, this thread is largely just you and I posting, but I too hope that there are lots of people reading as well.

But, just in case you are under the impression that Caro is my name (I know other members have been), it isn't. I'm a bloke. My username is a reference to my two favourite skaters - Carolina Kostner and Elizaveta Tuktamysheva.

Sorry I left you alone for so long... But I'm back, at least for today. And maybe tomorrow.

And it is so good to see you again.

I took me a while to be at peace with the score difference and the spots at Euros and Worlds, but I have no problem accepting it because as soon as I saw Olivia&Tim's free program at the begining of the season, I realized they were at another level (what a very good music & choreo can do to improve a team quality!).

It's funny, but I am the exact opposite with regards the music. Maybe I am biased because I loved Toto's music from the 1984 film so much, but I haven't liked any of the programmes I have seen that use Hans Zimmer's music from the new films.

If you want to have a listen, here is a playlist on YouTube:

Toto - "Dune" (1984 soundrack)

- They are with Philo&Raul, a new spanish team that I LOVE: don´t miss them, still a work in progress (with a lot of work to do), but they are special, very expresive and fun to watch, not funny, just fun: Raul is a showman and Philo is catching up. Well, I'm not going to hold talking about Sofía and Asaf's team-mates in their thread against you! Because I like them too!

I didn't see Philomena and Raul yesterday, because I am concentrating on watching the Volvo Open Cup LIVE. But I was really impressed with them at Nationals. And the audience in Logroño clearly were too! If they are this good already, they are only going to get better. And that could be a good thing for Sofía and Asaf. Let's face it, Olivia and Tim are currently the partnerhip setting the standard, but they aren't going to be around forever. But when they retire and Sofía and Asaf presumably take over that mantle, if Sofía and Asaf have a promising young partnership not just in the same field but in the same stables, they will not be able to rest on their laurels. We will see the two SK partnerships pushing each other forwards. Which can only be a good thing for Spanish Ice Dance, and for the partnerships themselves.

- The other good part is that Olivia &Tim seem to be reciving score enough to get 2 (maybe even 3?) spots at Euros for next season and also the oportunity of 2 spots at worlds. Am I too ambitious? Nah, just hopefull. And cheering for all of them :cheer:

Oh, I hope Olivia and Tim can do that. Because Sofía and Asaf are so good and deserve to be going to all the Majors.

Oh yes, Asaf was skating for Germany for a long time, with a number of different partners. The longest and most notabale being Lara LUFT. (Speaking of Lara, she really should not still be on Ice Partner Search! She is too good to have been on the sidelines for over 2 years!)

In fact, when the two new partnerships of Smart / Dieck and Val / Kazimov were announced, we were all expecting it to be a direct trade. That Olivia would go from Spain to Germany, and in return Asaf would go from Germany to Spain. Because Tim's family have such close ties to the Fed in Germany, the idea of him switching to Spain didn't even enter anybody's head. Yet that is what happened.

Male Ice Dancers are very hard to come by, and hence are very valuable. Yet the German Fed gave up two of them in one fell swoop. It doesn't make sense.

Being blunt, Germany could have been doing with having Olivia and Tim. Because none of the other partnerships in Germany (be it in Seniors or Juniors) are able to challenge Jen and Ben's scores. But Olivia and Tim have been scoring similarly to them the past couple of seasons, and look like moving ahead of them now.

But, this is getting too far of topic for this thread.

I'm just glad that Asaf went to Spain and partnered up with Sofía.

Sorry for the abbreviation, that's a bad habit of mine, I've done it with Philo (-mene) in that post too, and I should not do that. The references of your name in the forum are quite explicit, don´t worry. CKostner is in my personal collection of "iceskating goddess" too and I like Liza a lot and, as everybody, I'm missing her too in competitions.

The funny thing is that the references of my name in the forum are not explicit at all, in fact they are quite confusing. A long ago (like 20 years ago) the internet began to expand with no tools for security and personal data protection, so I choose a "war name" for my online presence, that I still use. Olivia, because I liked that name and Britt because... I was in Costa Rica at the time and it was the name of my favorite coffee brand... only to discover 15 years later that Olivia Smart, originally british, began to skate for Spain, in direct competition with my beloved Sara&Kirill... :laugh4: Sorry Olivia Smart, I chose this name first :drama:, I'm not going to change it at this point.

Sofía and Asaf finished 1st out of 11 in the FD, with a score of 106.35. This meant that they remained in 1st position overall, with a score of 172.77.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread about their programme:

A wee bit late, but I was otherwise occupied at the time they were skating (if I had had my wits about me, I could have done things the other way around and watched them LIVE. But, alas, I didn't). And I haven't seen the Warm-Up yet.

Twizzles in sync!!!

Because of where the laptop is postioned, it is so hard to write and watch at the same time compared to when I'm using the desktop. But, all I really need to say is that everything was sublime.

Well, I haven't seen anybody else. But that was amazing. If they don't win, whoever does must have been really exceptional!

Awww, the smiles of Sara when they were doing their bows.

And Sofía blowing kisses to me on the way to the results area! Thank you very much! Gratefully received. ;)

Sorry, I couldn't resist!

All three of them are happy.

That was lovely the way Sara presented them to the camera while waiting for the scores. But, sorry Sara, you deserve some of the credit too!

Oooh. Another kiss blown from Sofía.

THEY WIN THE FREE DANCE AND THE UNIVERSIADE TITLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

Great celebrations when the scores were announced. It's really hard to tell who was happiest of the three of them!

So proud of them.

:cheer: WELL DONE SOFÍA AND ASAF!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

My fellow regular in this thread, @Olibritt, commented as they were being introduced:

What happened with the stream??? Please come back
Well, I liked Giulia & Adrea but the french is the team to beat.
Let's go Sofia & Asaf!!

And then added after they skated:

Congrats Sofia & Asaf, that was amazing :cheer:
Congrats too SK Academy, you have done a great job. Keep growing :points:

@DemTuppesSeine also commented afterwards, with:

Ooooh they skated beautifully! So happy for them!

And I totally agree on both points!

Sofía and Asaf finished the Free Dance 2.92 points ahead of 2nd position, Lou TERREAUX / Noé PERRON (FRA), and 5.34 points ahead of 3rd position, Giulia Isabella PAOLINO / Andrea TUBA (ITA).

Overall, Sofía and Asaf finished 4.17 points ahead of 2nd position, Terreaux / Perron, and 5.92 points ahead of 3rd position, Paolino / Tuba.

Not only did they win the title, but they also achieved their highest Free Dance score of the season!!!

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

To all the naysayers: "Ha!"

With this title, Sofía and Asaf have proved to all the people that were criticising them and the Spanish Fed last season that they are not only good enough to compete on the biggest stages, but they are good enough to put in a real challenge.

It is just a pity that Spain is in the same position that they have always been in - having two partnerships that deserve to go to all the Majors, but not having enough slots to let them both go. But, hopefully Olivia and Tim can do something about that next week.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

So am I! They really deserved it.

I'm just ashamed that it took so long for me to post about it in here. But, there has been so much going on the past few days.

Anyway, I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but Sofía uploaded a video of their Gala programme to her YouTube channel yesterday:

Only 2 days after performing their Gala programme at the Universiade in Turin, Sofía and Asaf are already back in action today at the Ephesus Cup in İzmir, Turkey.

The Senior Short Dance is due to start at 14:12:40 TRT (11:12:40 GMT / 12:12:40 CET / 14:12:40 MSK). So 5 hours from now.

Ephesus Cup Short Dance: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yQ9s4NMu_Q

Sofía and Asaf finished 1st out of 8 in the Short Dance, with a score of 68.95.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

Took me a while to spot Sofíá and Asaf. She is wearing a red jacket, and he is wearing a black jacket. And the team from Brazil are the only ones not wearing red or black jackets!

It really helped when they took off their jackets. Because, although everybody is wearing black to some extent, I know Sofía and Asaf's costumes well enough to spot them without difficulty.

Not really much I can say about the warm up.

CaroLiza_fan

Here is what I wrote when they were being introduced:

Now for the newly crowned Universaide Champions.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST SOFÍA AND ASAF!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

And here is what I wrote about their programme:

Twizzles not as in sync as they were on Thursday.

They are just so good. I couldn't spot any other issues.

Asaf said in his Universiade profile that this would be their last competition of the season. Well, if it is, I will miss this programme.

Kirill the coat man greets them!

All three of them are wearing all black. And all three are smiling.

They go into the lead. But only by 1.47 points over Mariia IGNATEVA / Danijil Leonyidovics SZEMKO (HUN).

:cheer: WELL DONE SOFÍA AND ASAF!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Sofía and Asaf are currently 1.47 points ahead of 2nd position, Mariia IGNATEVA / Danijil Leonyidovics SZEMKO (HUN), and 7.34 points ahead of 3rd position, Katarina DELCAMP / Berk AKALIN (TUR).

Incidentally, their SK team-mates, Sophia BUSHELL / Antonio PEÑA (GBR), are 19.85 points behind them in 7th position. Sophia and Antonio are 7.46 points behind 6th position, Anna BODRONE / Stefano FRASCA (ITA), and 11.67 points ahead of 8th position, Tasya PUTRI / Dwiki Eka RAMADHAN (INA).

It must be fun in practice having two skaters with the same first name!

I think it is safe to say that we have a two-way battle for the title. I know Sofía and Asaf already have the big title of this season in the bag, but if this is indeed their last appearance of the season, they may as well just go out there and throw everything at it to try to secure their second 🥇 Gold Medal in the space of 4 days.

It would be a lovely way to end the season for them.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Senior Free Dance is due to start at 11:20:40 TRT (08:20:40 GMT / 09:20:40 CET / 11:20:40 MSK). So 3 hours from now.

Sofía and Asaf will be the 8th and final partnership to start. So, fourth and final partnership to go in Group 2.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 11:55:30 TRT (08:55:30 GMT / 09:55:30 CET / 11:55:30 MSK). So 3h 35m from now.

Sofía and Asaf are due to start at 12:23:00 TRT (09:23:00 GMT / 10:23:00 CET / 12:23:00 MSK). So 4h 3m from now.

Yesterday, there was a fire at a hotel in the ski resort of Kartalkaya (300 miles north-east of İzmir) that killed at least 76 people. And today has been declared a national day of mourning.

As a result, today's competitions at the Ephesus Cup have been rescheduled. They will now start 9 hours later than originally planned.

The Senior Free Dance is due to start at 20:20:40 TRT (17:20:40 GMT / 18:20:40 CET / 20:20:40 MSK). So 5 hours from now.

Sofía and Asaf will be the 8th and final partnership to start. So, fourth and final partnership to go in Group 2.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 20:55:30 TRT (17:55:30 GMT / 18:55:30 CET / 20:55:30 MSK). So 3h 35m from now.

Sofía and Asaf are due to start at 21:23:00 TRT (18:23:00 GMT / 19:23:00 CET / 21:23:00 MSK). So 4h 3m from now.

Sofía and Asaf finished 1st out of 8 in the FD, with a score of 107.56. This meant that they remained in 1st position overall, with a score of 176.51.

@DemTuppesSeine summed up perfectly what has happened the past few days with this comment in the event thread:

Sofia and Asaf won their second competition in a week 🥳

Looking at the Protocols, everything was faultless. All the GOE scores were big and positive, and the vast majority of the Judges marks were +2's and +3's. There were three +1's, two of which were for the Choreographic Sliding Movement. But there was even a +4 from Judge 5 for the Choreographic Character Step Sequence.

Sofía and Asaf finished the Free Dance 3.22 points ahead of 2nd position, Mariia IGNATEVA / Danijil Leonyidovics SZEMKO (HUN), and 11.72 points ahead of 3rd position, Natalia PALLU-NEVES / Jayin PANESAR (BRA).

Overall, Sofía and Asaf finished 4.69 points ahead of 2nd position, Ignateva / Szemko, and 19.58 points ahead of 3rd position, Katarina DELCAMP / Berk AKALIN (TUR).

Incidentally, their SK team-mates, Sophia BUSHELL / Antonio PEÑA (GBR), were also consistent throughout this event, finishing in 7th position in both segments and overall.

Getting the clean sweep of wins in two different events in two different countries, all within the space of just 7 days. If that doesn't convince the doubters that Sofía and Asaf are the real deal, then nothing will.

I am so proud of what they have achieved in the past week. And I can't wait until we see them again. But, please, don't make us wait until next season for it!

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

A visit to Challenge Cup would be appreciated (sorry, the stream is far too expensive, but we can attend as audience for free - which I am going to do).
