US Nationals - What are your thoughts?

I think once ABC showed a young novice (?) during their Exhibition broadcast. So I guess it's not impossible that they would show Caroline but I wouldn't count on it. She'd have to be SENSATIONAL.
ABC has usually showed at least one or more Junior and/or Novice champion skaters or teams performing in the Sunday exhibition (Meissner in both 2003 and 2004, for example, and the Novice pair winners, Paetsch/Nuss, last year). Last year, ABC also showed a brief clip of Caroline Zhang's spin combination during their Exhibition broadcast -- the first time that I can remember non-senior level competition footage being televised in recent years, and Zhang was "only" 8th in Junior. So it sure wouldn't surprise me if a full program of Zhang's made it to TV this year, especially if she wins the Junior title.

Especially if the senior ladies' event is a snooze. Americans are always hungry for something fresh and exciting. Look back on how Sasha Cohen burst onto the scene.

Yes, they did show a young novice skater during the Exhibition broadcast not long ago. That skater? Kimmie Meissner. ;)

And they did do a feature about Caroline during last year's Exhibition. It was one of those Little Girls Have Big Dreams Too segments so its not too far fetched that they'll show some of her LP and/or her exhibition if she skates well in Spokane. I remember seeing Caroline in novice two years ago and I always thought she was something special. She's an adorable young lady (I met her in St. Louis) and I hope she does well in Spokane. :agree:

No, the skater I'm referring to wasn't Kimmie. She was younger than her. But I can't remember her name.

12-year-old Rachael Flatt was shown the year she won the Novice title (2005) -- she skated her "Summertime" SP in the exhibition. :)

Ohh, that's right, I remember that now. I also forgot that they showed Kimmie both when she won novice and when she won juniors!

Great minds indeed Sylvia! :agree:

Ah. That was her, I think. Thanks. (I thought she was younger, though...like 9 or 10 or something???) But now I think I remember it being Rachel something, so I guess that's who I was thinking about.

Yes, it was Rachael and that was 2 years ago, so she would have been 12 then. Even today, Rachael is very small for a 14-year-old (well under 5' tall).

In her USFS bio, she says she wants to be a veterinarian. She said that originally, she wanted to specialize in horses, but now realizes she is much too small for that.

? How big do you have to be to be a horse doctor?

I think the key is muscular big. You have to be able to handle and manipulate a huge, heavy animal. (Imagine one giving birth, for example.) One of my college friends was a farrier during her time off from school, and even shoeing a relatively healthy animal took enormous physical strength.

Kimmie, Emily , Rachel and Alissa. There are a ton of newbies that are waiting for thier chance to shine. Oster just won the bronze at the JGPF (and she is a Sr lady). Also first year as a Sr, they have to be in culture shock. The cameras running over their heads, in thier faces, and then there is the 20,000+ people watching. So the ones who have been there have an advantage.
Alissa can't get her jumps together. Emily can't skate a clean fs. kimmie and no triple axel, Rachele coming off an injury and skated really slow at Mids. also flatt has no international experance. Hyatt is the Jr ladies champ and no one has mentioned her. Katy Taylor is going though growth spurts, Firth has great "pazzas" on the ice.
Also Tara has been out of figure skating for years so it's a moot point. MK and Sasha also are gone. And Oster beat Nakano (5th at worlds) at skate Detroit.

One of the horse vets I use is 5'2 and a tiny little thing. She trucks around a step ladder that is used quite often.

Finally, a poster who is much more aware of the field. There are skaters in the US Nats other than Kimmie, Emily, and Alyssa. Maybe some posters haven't seen them skate but they are there:
Juliana Cannarozzo, Megan Hyatt, Danielle Kahle, Christine Zukowski, Taylor Firth, Megan Oster, Katy Taylor, Rachael Flatt, and several others.

More than likely they will show the entire field on TV. Have a good look and see if you see others who may win a medal, now or in the future.

Joe

Forget about ABC/ESPN showing the entire field. On Thursday, the 25th, they will show the Men's AND Ladies SPs from 9pm to 12 midnight (EST). The Men's SP starts at 5pm (EST) and the Ladies, at 8:50pm. My guess is they will show the tape of the men's program, then cull selected skaters from the Ladies, with maybe a few live ladies. We will certainly not see either all 18 men and 21ladies in 3 hours of programming, what with the fluff and the commercials.

As for the FS, they are showing the ladies live on Saturday the 27th from 4-6 pm EST. The Ladies start at 1:40 EST, so what we will see are probably the final two flights with some selected skates from the earlier flights. It takes about an hour per flight, so don't expect to see all the ladies. There will only be two hours for the men, starting at 11 pm EST. The men are actually starting at 8:40, so again expect to see only the last two flights.

Just hope that your favorites skate well enough to finish in the top 12.

I wish they would show all the skaters then people would get a better idea of the up and comers. The Jr ladies have a deep field this year and I'm sure they will show Zhang (Because USFSA is betting that she is the next great hope of US figure skating), and I'm not saying she isn't. So please no hate mail.
I also hate when people say the season is early when it comes to the GP events and that says that is what the bad skate was about. And they tend to peek at nationals. Oh Pleeeeaassee. You know your going to an international event and you go knowing your not ready. And they get money to win to boot. Or they have spent the off season doing shows.
I will say that Kimmie and Emily will medal due to the fact that the USFSA promotes the heck out of them and they need the pay off. It never fails that who they promote won't win. They need to start promoting the up and comers. I'd really like to see some new faces on the podium.
One last thing. I know more of the Japanese skaters names then I do the US skaters. Why is that? I'm a huge skating fan, and I do know most of the Sr skaters and have heard of some of the Jr. But when it comes down to Novice, I have no clue. Talk about a big void.

^^^Isn't that what people said about last year's coverage though too? They showed a TON of skaters in the allotted times for St. Louis and it went over very well IIRC so I won't be surprised if they cram in a lot of skaters again. :)

And all I want for US Nats at this point is for Braden Overett and Amanda & Mark to get on TV so I can see their wonderful programs. I got my wish for Stephanie Rosenthal to be on TV last year so PLEASE let both of them make it to my TV this year!!!
