I'm just gonna rate that SD performance as a success. 
Yes, twizzles will probably always be a problem. But other than that, they looked well prepared, the program looks promising, the scores are encouraging considering the wobble. They broke 70 in their first outing and weren't hammered on any of the elements! Yay! :thumbsup:

Yay, over 70 for their SD debut in the new season! 
I was holding my breath while watching their skate. Fortunately my only fear did not happen! Nikita looked unsatisfied with his performance or the score in the K-and-C. Hey, cheer up guys, this is a very good start! 
Just keep it up in the FD!

He also knows that he messed up that first set of twizzles, so that contributed to them being behind S/B. OTOH, they posted good, competitive scores in their first outing and they need to be able to put this all into context going forward: They had a very difficult time of it before the season started and considering all that, this was strong. There's also still work to be done and improvements they can make.Yay, over 70 for their SD debut in the new season!

Don't hate Nikita for some one-sided stories.
I love watching his soft knees while skating. Great to see that Vika has improved a lot over last season! :thumbsup:The good news is that the FD is not a mess anymore and in much better shape than it used to be. They also broke 100 in their first big competition and I like the program for them in general. However, the result here was fair IMO. They don't yet have mileage on that FD, there were insecurities and stumbles, and all of that was visible even on TV. I'm sure it was even more obvious live. But that's just how it goes: If they want to improve it, they need to skate it, they need feedback and they need competitive experience with it, only then can it get more secure and powerful and polished. There were these moments when it really came together and was brilliant, but then it dimmed again because they're not yet completely comfortable with it. And they have lovely chemistry that the program really highlights. Solid competition for them anyway, I thought. Upwards and onwards!

^^^ agree, katha! They need to get comfortable with this program. I hope for them to at least get their nerves in control as well. And hey, their twizzle were quite okay here!

I think it's a combination of S/B already being more polished and being a known quantity for the judges this season, normal hesitation when a pair with unknown programs comes in and perhaps also (lack of) performance quality. The SD is in better shape than the FD, but I watched with the British Eurosport guys and they said that the Blues was great but starting with the mistake on the twizzles the swing started looking ragged. That's not something that translates on TV, but must be more obvious in person. They seemed to think the scores were appropriate.
And with the FD, it was even clearly visible on TV. The program looks coherent now and they skate it like a unit, but there was a hesitation throughout. There were also insecurities and stumbles, particularly from Vika, that marred the overall impression as well. Gotta say, seeing them perform now in CoC, it's becoming obvious how undertrained and behind in preparation Nikita was earlier in the season. I thought he was very strong in the tango, while Viktoria for all her improvements looked a bit exposed and vulnerable (perhaps because the FD is technically challenging in a way the FD last year wasn't?). But I'm sure it will get better with every outing. What they might also reconsider is her hairstyle, it got messier the longer the program continued. Perhaps something that will stay in place better, or let her hair open?

I thought she was fine in the SD, she did look exposed in the FD. What I think is playing into that perception, though, is that Nikita wasn't skating up to his usual standards in the pre-season. So she looked stronger, while he looked severely weakened. That's not the case anymore, so her shortcomings become more obvious again. She was pretty much carrying the team in the pre-season since Nikita was a total mess.Vika scared me, she looked so stiff and nervous

No offense to Vika, but she is a bit stiff... she has improved though
They have room for improvement. Not a bad showing at all for their debut this season. If they clean some things up they can definitely score better.
I think as a team they have been well coached in the sense that the focus the last two seasons has been on technique and the basics and getting Vika up to Nikita's level. Oh and fixing Nikita's twizzasters.
Choreography, polish and grandeur will come later when they get the basics and consistency down.

I am so thrilled with their new free dance! Nikita looks so cool on ice! Such a charismatic couple, although "Vika still could not keep up with Nikita's steps" as some Russian fans put it. I think they are still the future of Russian ID, and they have much room for improvement before the Nationals. Whether they can make the Worlds team by the end of the season, we will have to wait and see.

yep & I love to hear more positive comments even from ppl who belitled them in the earlier seasons
I dont see them as mismatched & Vika as that much weaker anymore
In the SD she was amazing. The FD yep it was messier but imo she seemed nervous not b/c she lacked skills
Their biggest rival is imo injuries. If nothing stalled them they would have been as prepared as SB.
Now they obv arent in the frontrunner position in comparison to teams that competed more & were seen more.
Imo they need Bs & more practice in competitions. Need to be stable.
I dont see much improvement technically next week cause not much time left but imo they may be less nervous b/c they're not in a medal contention.
Anyway I rewatched their FD & SD so many times now
Even with mistakes they're SOOOOOOOOOO beautiful tho

Yeah, I'd agree with that. I think in the beginning Marina thought they could just continue on where, well, perhaps not I/K, but S/Z had stopped and they'd be competitive right off. That's really where her inexperience with putting together new dance couples came in. But even though it was messy, it looked like they had potential even in that first season. Then last year they had these "back to basics" programs that cleaned them up and made them skate together better. Now IMO they're really looking like a unit out there on the ice and they can handle the more sophisticated programs they've been given, even though it's still a work in progress. They're moving in the right general direction, even though there might be set-backs in the short-term etc.
