What you loved and what you didn't of the World Championship?

Best:
-Adrian Schultheiss! I had never seen him skate before, and now I love him!
-Virtue/Moir winning a medal in only their second Worlds!
-V/M's reactions to winning a medal. They were so excited! I wish all skaters would get this excited to medal.
-Charlie White...'nuff said.
-Dube/Davison winning a medal, after all they've been through.
-Jeremy Abbott being able to pull off a top 12 performance, even though he was called up on such a short notice.
-Navarro/Bommentre doing so well with their performances, especially with his luggage being lost for a time.
-The Kerrs' OD...I loved the fact that he wore a kilt!

Worst:
-The entire U.S. Ladies team's performance...what was going on?
-Belbin/Agosto's fall...:cry:

Really??? Everybody can have his/her opinion, but I would be glad if you can explain me why that program is better than Arakawa 2006 Olympics LP, Slutskaya 2005 Worlds LP, Meissner 2006 Worlds LP, Ando 2007 Worlds LP, Asada 2007 Worlds LP, Yu Na Kim 2007 CoC LP and so on and so forth ... just to give some examples.
 
Favs:
-Jeff Buttle winning the mens' event. Not the most exciting set of performances (his SP is great; Joubert's FS was definitely more exciting), but they were both consistent and I think he deserved the gold medal
-Weir's SP, and more importantly his new attitude...he's been an arrogant little brat the past few seasons (IMHO :p), but he seems to have gotten his head on straight and seems a lot more committed to his training and his skating, which prolly has a lot to do w/ why I enjoyed his programs this time around
-Verner's SP...goodness, is he one to watch the next few seasons. Shame about the total meltdown in the FS, though
-Kimmie Meissner. She probably shouldn't have made it to Worlds and a lot of unbecoming (and unfair) things have been said about her b/c of it. But you've got to give her credit, she did as well as she could in the midst of a horrible season
-S/S winning pairs. Props to them for sticking with Ingo Steuer. They've made their peace with him. They've moved on with their lives. Maybe now the German federation will do the same.
-Virtue/Moir. They're awesome. Their FD was awesome. I wouldn't go so far as saying they're the next T/D, but I will give Scott Moir +3 GOE for being really hot :p
-KVDP's FS. The 3f-3t-3lo combination alone was equally as hot as Scott Moir :rofl:
-Mao's SP. If she would just learn to control that flutz...
-Nakano's FS. Could have won the gold. Definitely should have won the silver. All I'm gonna say.

Worst:
-Joubert's SP. He had me eating out of the palm of his hand until he blew the 3lutz. Also, if you're skating to a piece of music that was especially composed for you, make sure it's one that's not going to get a music violation
-Mao's fall on the 3axel. *shudder*
-Z/Z's FS. There was zero relation to each other and the audience. Totally ice cold
-B/A's CD. Oh, what could have been
-All the arguments about the age rule. Get over it and wait until they turn 16, people.
-Kostner's FS/Nakano not making the podium. I've already said way too much on way too many threads

Kudos to the audience, and John Kerr for that kilt. The Kerrs deserved a bonus on their score for that
 
Nice surprise:

Jeff Buttle skated two perfect programs and won the Gold (Well deserved).
D/D medaled.

Stunned:

S/S won the gold with such a sloppy skate. Way overmarked in both SP and LP and not deserved. They are good skaters but not at this world.

Carolina won silver with that complete mess LP. That should be Yu-na's. Yukari didn't make the podium with that performance and 3rd in the SP.

Brian's attitude about the loss, which mainly his own fault of miscalculation. (But like both his programs better this season).

Pang/Tong were marked so low.

Happy for the out come:

D/S won their first World medal, and it was Gold.
V/M won their silver medals.
B/A off podium (run for my life)
Mao won the Gold, great recovery after the terrible fall. She skated like a champion. ( I predict Yu-na will win next year, as it happened before, she won every gold after Mao had won it:) , as somebody else pointed out)

Great to see:
Kevin's 3/3/3 and the whole LP. Great effort.
Jeremy Abbot:) , a new talent (for me, first time seeing him, and I'm a fan now). I look forward to see great things happen to him, as did with Stapnene Liambel (same thing happened when I watched him skating for the first time, made me a fan instantly.)
Ice dance! So many great performances.

There may have been more technically accomplished lps, and I've missed my share of them so some may have slipped under the radar but Nakano's 08 worlds lp is the _first_ ladies CoP lp I've wanted to see again (the last ladies lp I felt that way about was Arakawa's 04 worlds, her turin lp was the best of the night but I haven't been hankering to watch it again and again).

Kim may well have done better lp's that I've missed, for me she and Nakano are the main reasons for watching ladies (maybe with Meier, who I've always liked). of course ymmv

I agree. I too love Mr. Button and will sorely miss ABC/ESPN's coverage. He may by a grumpy curmudgeon at times, but he is largely responsible for creating America's love affair with skating. He gets far too little credit for that.

I'm still not convinced that NBC (despite being a broadcast network) will do the sport the same justice ABC has over the decades. I just get the sense they are chasing the ratings revenue for Vancouver, rather than being interested in making a long term committment to the sport. We'll have to wait and see.

I was sooo glad ESPN gave Christopher Bowman a tribute (something NBC failed to do). Everyone deserves recognition when they pass away no matter the circumstances.

I was also pleased to hear Paul referring to the judges protocols while the scores were being announced rather than waiting until later in the broadcast to check them. Many of the TV analysts in other countries do this (e.g. Eurosport) and it really adds to the viewers' understanding. I think no matter who the broadcaster is in the future SOMEONE has to have this role assigned to them and understand what they are talking about. Somebody who can quickly and accurately interpret the scores. This is no different that having a commentator in a football game be able to spout off rules in football or interpret instant replay. It would help the views sooo much.

Kurt Browning was also spot on when calling Jeff's free skate on CBC by pointing out that he was getting all his combinations done. Doing those cleanly made the difference for him.

Others faves
1. Happy for Aliona and Robin. Not their best, but their program and skating skills are so rich that they have more margin for error than most. Still deserved to win.
2. Delight for Jeff. There's more than one way to skin a cat under COP.
3. Pleased Johnny held it together. I'm an Evan fan, but I wish him and the team no ill will. Hopefully now we can all move on.
4. Sorry for B/A, but pleased for D/S. Their program is one of my faves of the season. Loved how it continued to blossom all season.
5. Ice dance continues to benefit from COP more than any other discipline.
6. Please Yukari skated well, but leg wrap must be fixed. It's why she keeps getting downgraded on rotations.
7. Good for D/W. They didn't let themselves get down and managed to pull up in the end. Hope they improve next year.
 
I also love Dube/Davison and were glad they won a medal.

Does anyone else think that Dube/Davison remind them of Jenni Meno and Todd Sand. Just the way that the skate and the connection that they have to each other, the way that they look at each other?
 
What I loved:
Jeff Buttle winning the gold highly deserved and with one of the best FS I've seen for a while! What a comeback! And he's so adorable when he smiles!:bow:
Brian's recovery after that terrible and absolutely unnecessary fall in the sp.
Lambiel's FS if you'd leave out all the mistakes.
The whole dance competition!
Delobel & Schoenfelder finally being rewarded what they deserved, their wonderful FS and their expressions during the medal ceremony.
The Kerr's OD and John wearing a skirt!
Belbin & Agosto's OD.
Aljona & Robin becoming world champions! So happy for them!
Dube & Davison's FS.
Annette Dytrt skating two clean programs and finishing 12th place.
Sarah Meier, both SP and FS.
Eurosport broadcasting everything live!
The audience! Great atmosphere, and they always knew if someone needed support.

What I didn't like:
Tanith's fall in the CD and her and Ben being off the podium!:cry:
Miki had to give up! Such a brave girl!
Lambiel making way too many mistakes and ending up in fifth place!
Tomas meltdown! So heartbreaking!
The Zhang's being so overmarked in the PCS!

After all I enjoyed the whole competition!
 
I forgot to add to my thrills list: listening to John Kerr talk. Where can I find myself a handsome Scotsman? :p
 
I didn't like those WEIRD pink & blue feather-thingy bouquets. Maybe the winners should have put them on their heads and worn them as hats...??

I agree she was underscored, but I'm not sure if it was a flip. But it does look like she's worked on making sure she's not taking off on an outside edge. It looked more like a flat edge. Maybe by next season she'll have it on the inside edge. However, I'm not sure if it should have been downgraded. It wasn't the highest jump in the world, but was it more than a quarter turn cheat? I didn't really think so.


The worst parts of this Worlds for me were:

Tanith falling, which led to B&A getting underscored in the OD, for some reason
Miki withdrawing in such an emotional way
Kostner medaling after what I felt was an awful performance
The U.S. losing 3 spots in Ladies
K&N, the 2nd ranked Russian ice dance team, flying up the standings with D&S not there
Joubert getting a music violation this late in the season
The lack of consistency with underrotation and wrong-edge calls... this judging system still has issues.

The best parts of Worlds for me were:

Weir finally getting a World medal
Buttle finally medaling (winning!) without falling
Joubert coming back successfully from his virus
S&S winning pairs gold (even though their long program was not good)
Mao winning
Yukari skating probably the best long program of her life
Bebe skating a clean short
Kimmie skating a clean short program, not falling 3 times in the long, and getting some of her confidence back. She seems less stressed.
 
The most underestimated skater prior to the Worlds: Yukari Nakano
The most unfairly judged skater during the competition: Yukari Nakano
The most hyped skater post factum: Yukari Nakano

The best professional killer out there (special nomination by the commentators of Russian Eurosport): Brian Joubert
The best karma related lesson (special nomination by the "Good guys in white always win in the end" movement): Carolina Kostner - Tomas Verner

The part that made this Worlds significant: Ladies LP

Oh, same. When they were interviewed on ESPN I was like :love: at his voice.
And I'm already a fan of the Scottish accent thanks to Gerry Butler but John Kerr...

  • Jeff winning
  • Jeff skating a clean long (the closest I've ever seen was his long at the 2005 Canadians where he did a turn out of a triple lutz)
  • Jeff skating 2 clean programs
  • Jeff doing 2 triple axels in the same program successfully (as Tracy Wilson said, he hadn't done that in over 2 years)
  • Jeff's new 3a consistency

On to other topics...
  • Brian's LP - yes, his reactions afterwards could have been better, but he fought back and tried hard out there... he could have taken risks (which he accused Jeff of not doing) and done his program as it had been choreographed, but what he did do kicked frickin butt! I also love seeing Brian now showing the ability to 'skate', not just jump. He's an actual skater now.
  • Johnny Weir - I'm by no means a fan of his. Never have been, but I actually enjoy him this season and I enjoyed him here at worlds and his bronze was fully worth it. Kudos to Victor Petrenko for whipping him into shape!
  • Patrick Chan - huge pressure on the kid - Skate Canada wanted him in the top 5 at his first worlds, but to skate 2 decent skates as a 17 year old at your first worlds after winning your first national title and to place 9th... that was awesome. Congratulations!
    • How most of the men didn't completely tank. Yes, there were mistakes, but they were little mistakes that added up, not complete meltdowns (in most cases) and that was great to see.
  • Duhamel/Buntin - they have been together for less than a year and Meagan has never competed at this level before. They skated 2 amazingly awesome programs, nailing almost everything and came 6th. Not only have they been together for so short a time, but Craig has a shoulder injury! Awesome job.
  • Yu Na Kim - awesome job to come back and win the long to end up 3rd again.
  • Yukari Nakano - oh that leg wrap... and if she only completed the rotation on her 3a... but what an amazing performance and all out skate.
  • Belbin Agosto not on the podium - I know... I'll be blasted for this, but man am I glad. I don't mind him but I don't like her skating - bent knee, flexed toe instead of pointed, leg not turned out... I've always found them overrated and I'm glad to see them off the podium.

One huge like... CBC - they covered everything pretty well. I don't have CBC Canada, but I was pretty pleased with the coverage I did get.

And also... GO CANADA! When is the last time we've been able to say that Canada was the top country at the Worlds? Great job Canucks!

  • Brian's comments - they may have been taken out of context in the heat of the moment, but saying that you lost to someone who didn't take risks beacuse he didn't ahve a quad... Jeff didn't modify his program to ensure he skated cleanly and Jeff completely maximized his point potential. He took insane risks for his ability whereas Brian didn't. A quad isn't everything!
  • The men not thinking clearly... what, 3 or 4 of the men couldn't count their combos so didn't get credit? Think boys, think!
  • The womens event was pretty underwhelming.
  • Pairs was a bit underwhelming as well.
  • I found dance kind of dull this year. It doesn't seem like teams are taking as many risks as they used to.
  • The gala was pretty dull too. Why does everyone decide to do slow mopey music for the gala? The gala is supposed to be fun! Remember the days of Lloyd Eisler dressing up as a woman with Isabelle Brasseur and just goofing off? Kurt Browning as Charlie Brown? Phillippe Candeloro whipping his shirt off? Those were the fun days! Galas are dull now.
  • CBC commentary was generally good but Kurt Browning started to irk me... dude, you haven't competed in 14 years... don't make everything about you!! It isn't "ISU World Figure Skating Championships f. Kurt Browning's Egocentric Retrospective."

I agree. I will add also Debi Thomas as Wanda :laugh:, Plush sexbomb, Slutskaya cowboy and catwoman, Michael Weiss, Yagudin, Gusmeroli, Stoiko, Boitano, Orser, Povilas/Vanagas and many others.
That were fun galas! Ah, those golden days (late 80s till early 00s). I'm really nostalgic! :cry:
