What you loved and what you didn't of the World Championship?

ITA!!! I'm going nuts already! (Lucky me got best friend as deep into this as I am, otherwise I promise you I hadn't survive!) Which date starts season 08/09? Are there anything left this season? Just a tiny tiny competition will do right now... O_O

The Jr. GP starts in Aug I think. The Sr. events don't usually start until Oct. Check the ISU site calader of events the accual dates should be there.

I loved all the programs by Jeremy Abbott. He and the music just seem to blend together and is a joy to watch. Looking forward to see how he develops next year.

The good
- Aliona & Robin win the gold
- Delobel & Shonfelder finally became world champions
- Yukari Nakano’s SP & LP
- Virtue/Moir on the podium
- Pechalat/Burza OD & FS (that pair is really talented)


The bad
- Takahashi’s, Lambiel’s & Verner’s LP (my dream podium was: 1.Takahashi, 2. Lambiel, 3. Verner, so men’s competitions was a big disappointment for me )
- Yukari Nakano’s scores, I think she deserved a medal
- Aliona & Robin didn’t skate clean
- Many top skaters didn’t skate clean
- Joubert’s commentaries about Buttle victory

Dance

- Bad: K+N's costumes. Those are the kind of costumes that make people dismiss ice dancing as trashy and ridiculous!

Ladies
- Bad: The distinct lack of personality! Right now I can't for the life of me remember any of the choreography/music/themes/moods in the programs. Why is this such a problem in the ladies' event?

I dont agree with K/N costumes (I believe you talk about FD). I think that in the case where such costumes really emphasize the character of the dance, there is nothing wrong with them and they should be accepted.

But I do agree what you wrote about ladies competition. I wrote in several threads that I won't remember next year what the medalist skated to. Gosh, I already don't remember. And I dont remember what they skated to last year. Artistically the competition was very boring (both in 2007 and 2008).

I have to also agree with this statement. I met Kris at Skate America this year. He was so nice. He took the time to take a picture with me and sign and autograph and his accent is way cool!!! I also thought his programs were good!! It was nice to see him do rather well at the championships!!

Yes, he's really down-to-earth I think both he and Adrian are. Swedish mentality and to be a "celebrity" don't affect them like it does for others.

There were so many things I loved about this year's worlds, mostly:
- the live coverage online - it was so exciting to watch all the events as they were happening
- the men's short program - I watched the whole thing (and somehow made it through the rest of the day in a semi-conscious state), and there was a lot of great skating, including many of the lesser-known skaters that I had never seen before
- Jeff Buttle's gold medal - definitely the highlight for me!
- The Swedish crowd - it seemed like they were very supportive of all the skaters, and I loved how they went absolutely nuts for Kristoffer Berntsson and Adrian Schultheiss

Things I didn't like? Pretty much just one: the season is over now! How many days until next season starts??

3. Thrilled that Johnny finally got his first World medal.

But in the meantime, I am so disappointed by men's final competition. And all the skaters that I think should and hoped to be on the podium were not there (Takahashi, Lambiel, and Verner). What a disappointment!

Loved:
The unpredictable men's competition - Joubert's comeback from 6th place, Johnny getting his first world medal and Jeff! Jeff! I don't think I've ever seen him skate two clean programs, much less skate them that brilliantly.

Finally getting to see the original dances - thank you, ESPN! Have I told you all lately how much I love the Kerrs? I cried. Loved the music, loved the costumes, love love love THEM! And NavBom! The costumes were still hideous, but I hadn't seen that OD since August and loved the way it developed. Thank you for not skating to freaking "Kalinka", kids. Can't wait to see what you do next season!

NavBom! 12th at their first Worlds! Top 10 next year, right, guys? (*crosses fingers, decides not to hold breath*) DelScho FINALLY winning that long overdue gold medal also made me a very happy girl.

BeBe finally skating a clean short program. I saw that program at the Silicon Valley Open last summer and she fell three times in two and a half minutes. Much better last week! :thumbsup:

All the clips from Worlds past that were shown. Good memories.

Hated:
The utter snooze-fest that was the ladies' competition. I literally fell asleep. It's never been my favorite discipline, but I can usually stay awake for it.

Not so happy with the judging in the pairs, either. Happy for Dube and Davison, though - they were beautiful and earned a spot on the podium. I do not know how the Germans won that competition with the programs I saw televised. I'm not unhappy they have a gold medal, because I think they're great, most of the time. I'm willing to concede that the judges saw something I did not - I wasn't there. Going on what I saw? The Zhangs were robbed.

What really made me sad was the end of the ABC/ESPN era. You heard it here, folks. I'm really going to miss Terry Gannon.

Looking forward to next season. Meanwhile, there are local competitions so I can get my fix.

I loved that D&L won dance. I was SO FREAKING EXCITED!

I loved that although Kimmie didn't skate perfectly, she definitely looked better than she did at GPF/Nationals. And I loved that she said she was happy with how she skated, because if you can't enjoy yourself, then why bother skating?

I loved Yukari Nakano's performances. She is so beautiful to watch.

I loved Caro staying on her feet the whole time. No, she wasn't perfect, but she did not pop anything or fall on anything.

The only thing I really hated about Worlds was all the people bashing Carolina for earning the silver. I know she wasn't perfect, but she shouldn't be faulted for knowing how to work COP. She played by the rules and finished in second, and I'm so happy for her!

I will focus on Ladies, as usual.

WHAT I LIKED: Hmm. The ABC broadcast, flashbacks, and ample backstage footage. Also dug that it was in HIGH-DEF!! Although it was taped, the coverage was good, I thought. Not perfect, though. Meissner's resurgent effort in her SP.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: No inherent excitement, no one that really got me pumped. Mao Asada winning. Kostner getting silver despite a craptacular FS. BeBe and Wagner tanking.


Overall, quite an underwhelming event, skating wise. Let's hope the up-and-comers can hang in there and shake things up next year...
