Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

What's infusion therapy?

What is infusion therapy?

Infusion therapy involves the administration of medication through a needle or catheter. It is prescribed when a patient’s condition is so severe that it cannot be treated effectively by oral medications. Typically, “infusion therapy” means that a drug is administered intravenously, but the term also may refer to situations where drugs are provided through other non-oral routes, such as intramuscular injections and epidural routes (into the membranes surrounding the spinal cord).

JSF will announce yuzuru's condition after dec 30. Yuzuru is doing infusion therapy. A few doctors have examined him for two days. They are mainly treating his fatigue at the moment. they will adjust the plan for wc later. Not many useful information though.

This doesn't sound good at all. Infusion therapy seems to mean he's hooked up to an IV. Poor guy...now I'm really beginning to worry.

Let's form a virtual prayer/well-wishes circle to send our wishes and prayers to him!

Maybe that'll relieve some worry!

I think we should stay optimistic, I bet it's just culmination of his body fatigue and stress after what happened after COC, as he was off ice, his physical strength dropped, then he had very hard week of training before GPF, and then straight to nationals
they are treating him with infusion therapy propably to get his body to shape as it should be

This is not entirely correct - many drugs can not be formulated to be taken orally (tablet), and must be administered via infusion. This is independent of severity of patient condition. However, in a hospital setting, IV administration is often the fastest, and most easily controlled method. If Yuzuru is having problems with his stomach, IV administration would avoid potential problems with stomach irritation after oral ingestion.

Due to weight loss and stomach problems, it is possible he's on standard Ringer's solution (electrolytes containing sugars, salts) just to maintain, while testing is being done.

Let's try to not worry too much, until more information is forthcoming.

That's what I figure it is. He's probably flat exhausted at this point. His year has been insane and the last 7 weeks he's been going non stop without proper time to recover from the injuries. They probably have to build up his immune system again after it's been shot to hell

This is probably, and hopefully, the case. It's still worrying that he's exhausted to such an extreme point, but I think we all shouldn't stress too much until his condition is further updated. And at least he is resting and being taken care of by medical professionals now, instead of going off somewhere competing.

I agree. Let's patiently wait for JSF's announcement before we get ourselves all too worry!
Quoting from the news link above, the very last sentence is "現段階では入院して疲労回復に専念する", if I'm understanding this correctly with my limited Japanese I think the IV treatment he is getting right now is mainly to target his fatigue body condition. After all, he's had 3 intense competitions in the past 4 weeks! He must have been exhausted.
