Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

I've actually never really watched the CBC version of his 2013 GPF FS skate before, so hearing the commentators say its "Well Hanyu wins probably, you could say, the most important competition of his career." is funny. I guess they were talking about at that moment though

They make sense:laugh:After all it was the turning point when he dethroned Patrick, became a true contender for the gold medal at Sochi and started his reign (though now ended by Fernandez:disapp:) strategically it was (one of) the most important competition of his career.

I think the good thing about having an Olympic title is that as long as you deliver, you won't be lowballed. Yuzu has a pattern to do not so well in the GP events, so that usually give a bad impression. If he doesn't have a big title, he is likely to be lowballed even when he does well in the future. So given that he has a big title, he can still have more opportunities to redeem himself.

His reign continues, you know, Javier (rightfully) won but Yuzu is still considered as the Ice Prince. Just like Plushenko is still the king. :)
As we said before (and Yuzuru did too), the fact that he got silver will motivate him and help him learning too. I'm confident.

Well, Miki won over Yuna at WC 2011, but Yuna's still the queen. ;)

Sounds like whoever is more popular is the queen/king/prince.
I like Miki as a person. But admit it, Yuna had much better skating skill than Miki. And overall Yuna was more consistent.

In lady field, I can only think of Carolina to have better skating skill than Yuna. But Carolina was inconsistent as well.

And honestly Miki is very famous. I think in some places she is more well known than people often give her the credit. Miki is often invited to ice shows in Europe. And if you talk about the looks, many people prefer Miki as they think she looks more exotic (high cheekbones) and can be better model on magazine.

Actually now that if you compare Miki to Javi, they're very much alike. Huge jumps (especially that 4S) but not really consistent, and their skating skill are about so so relatively in their field. But they both won WC over someone who have better skating skill than them (but made more mistakes than them in some occasions).

In short, royal couple.

Even if Javier won the gold medal and Yuzurun the silver medal, I don't think that means anything more than one competition where Javier skates his best ever and Yuzu not at his best, especially with the string of accident, injuries then his operation in January. He could not train for the World properly, not enough training time, without a coach. I think that we have to consider these circonstances. Just in December 2014, Yuzu won the gold medal GPF over Javier with 35 + points more. And at World in Shanghai, Yuzu lost to Javier by 3 points. If Yuzu had land his quad cleanly in SP or one quad in FP, he would have enough points to win the gold medal. Just my opinion. I don't think that Javi is better skater than Yuzu. Maybe this will be the only time Javi won, who knows.

noone is saying javier is better overall skater but that doesnt mean we can ignore his accomplishment here where he was the best on the day, took advantage of other skater's mistakes and deservedly won his title, besides at GPF he made too many mistakes thats why he was 35 points behind hanyu, and his best score is around 186 for the long program from EC 2013 with doubling one of his jumps (flip which cost him aboput 3 points BV) so he definitely has higher score potential (not as much as yuzuru though if both skate clean but who knows if its possible for both of them to skate clean ) :)

Yes, it doesn't matter about scoring potential so much as what you actually do during the competition. Javi brought his best skate to World Championships and so he is a most deserved winner.
I'm sure Yuzu try to make sure it never happens again. ;)

If only Yuzu did 4S with fall, not 2S, Yuzu would win.
But then his haters would die of happiness, trashing his victory.
I wish people were able to recognize, that overall quality of Yuzu jumps, spins and steps is just enormously better than everyone else`s.
But no, they`d only bring up 3 clean quads vs 2 flawed quads. :disapp:

Please, we've had this already- Patrick has been winning with lots of flawed jumps, I hated that system allowed him do that. Quality of everything should not overshadow cleaner executed performance if it's technical value permits to win.

I think it was better that Javi won exactly because of that. Haters would have had a field day trashing Yuzuru for winning without a clean quad, even more so when Javi landed almost all his quads and made no mistakes in the SP, he may not have the level of skills Denis and Yuzuru have but he has the jumps and technicals. And I personally wouldn't have wanted a victory like that to be remembered the way Patrick's 3rd World Title was.

If you ask me I'd say I think Yuzuru showed the best skating skill among the top men at Shanghai.

General, if you talk about skating skill in all field I think Patrick is still the best and I highly doubt that anyone can come close to Patrick in SS since 1)he has trained his basics from very very young and 2) his great masters all have passed away, no one teaches SS like that now anymore (since it's not worthy under CoP). Before this season I think only Kozuka comes behind Patrick in SS. But this season Yuzuru has improved a lot (and Yuzuru is faster on ice) so I think it's not too long until Yuzuru is just right behind Patrick in SS (if he continues to improve his edge which I believe he will).

That's why I mentioned Miki. Please note that I like Miki as a person much more than Yuna. And her win at WC 2011 is very deserving. But for sure if you ask 1000 people who basically have no bias towards Miki or Yuna, I believe the majority of them would say Yuna is the better skater overall. I am not Yuna fan (and I have gotten enough hate because of that lol). I was thrilled for Miki to win. But to be honest, had Yuna skated at her best, Miki would have had no chance. So there's a reason why Yuna is called the queen despite the fact that she did not always win, it's not just because she has many fans. One reason is because because she is the OGM, and the another reason is she has stellar skating skill and very consistent overall.

Do I think Yuzuru has stellar skating skill? Yes, not as Patrick but he will improve fast. Do I think Yuzuru is consistent? Yes. With men field, he is quite consistent. And he has been in his 5th year as a senior already. It's not the matter of winning or losing a competition. No one can win all the time. I don't believe you can win all the time even if you are the greatest skater of all time (see Yuna, Kwan). But the level of your skating quality overall is still on top. He has many to improve, especially his stamina and consistency overall. But I don't think it's wrong to say Yuzuru is still the prince.

I think it was better that Javi won exactly because of that. So true. I doubt that Yuzuru could be happy if the judges gave him 3 more points in PCS so he could win. No one should win that way. You did not do well enough, you lose. You know what you must to get better score next time. Get more preparation, stay healthy, keep good mentality...

That's why we have many kings and queens and princes of fs, why don't we have princesses though?

Edit: maybe yuzuki can be one!

Lol yuzuki? hehe, in Japan many call Mao 真央姫 “Mao-hime” (princess Mao) so we have a princess already :p
Some fans even say that she is a 天女, a kind of angel, and others say sha is like a 観音様, the goddess of Buddha, by her appearance) though not sure if 観音様 is a male or female.

not to mention many fans call Yuzuru 氷上の貴公子 (ice prince).
in addition people call Plushenko 皇帝 “Kou-tei” means the emperor (king) as you know

by the way this is funny isn't it? (they look alike)

For me, Miki was a better skater, than Yuna. Because Miki was the first woman who succesfully land 4S (yeah, may be it was a destiny that now she`s engaged to Javi - 4S is their fav;)) and Miki had 3 lutz-3 loop.
She lost it later, she had injuries.
Was it payback for 4S dunno.
Yuna had slightly better SS and better programs. Their spins were same quality.
Miki is 2 time world champion like Yuna, but no Oly medal for Miki.
Overall, I think that Yuna, Miki, Mao, Caro - they all are queens.

As for Yuzu still being prince - I would say, for now, we have 2 superstars of men skating - Yuzu and Patrick.
As much as I admire Patrick, I think he is past his peak.
Clean and healthy Yuzu could be challenged by clean Denis and may be, someone of a younger generation.
