Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

Yuzuru Hanyu wins the award for the most fun medal ceremony ever

There is a post below the above in the IFS fb talked about mob scene at GPF outside of the skaters' entrance to the arena. And one poster commented "We saw similar 'rock star' hysteria for Hanyu at CoC it took me back to my days as a Bay City Roller fan". Looking at the amount of poohs/gifts at last COC + his GPF win, they will need the security at Worlds 2015.

Someone even captured his flight boarding pass to Barcelona and posted it on tumblr :disapp:. And it was taken down after someone contacted the poster.

+3 for saying NO to JSF ice shows.

You can see from my name "Schatz" that I'm german. I felt sorry about the little german girl. But his father describing Yuzu as arrogant really made me mad.
yeah, chinese fans seem to be really polite and wise. Once there're some crazy behaviors of some young fans, they make new rule for the fans and reason the fans. Just look, how quiet the COC rink became before Yuzuru's programm.
I feel sorry for the girl but her father might have gone too far. Yuzuru didn't even sign at NHK, his home event. If he says yes to one, then he will have to say yes to 1000. That would drive him crazy.

Actually I am glad that he is learning to say no, just like Yulia. If he doesn't say no when he's tired, stressed... Then he will never feel safe and relax. The pressure on him is overwhelming, especially now that he's the only OGM who ever competes right after he won OG, all attention from the skating world, not just Japan, is on him.

I have seen how many likes a post about him on FS magazine gets (over thousands per post) compare to other posts (about one or two hundred likes). The attention on him is huge. I hope he will not feel too guilty because he had to refuse some fans. He will never have enough time for all.

I hope someone will tell the father of the flower girl this. Yuzuru has spent weeks to reply fan mails, some even dated back from 2012. There would be no way such a person can be arrogant and cold. Maybe the little girl asked him in the wrong moment, I think Yuzuru was advised by JSF and Borser to refuse. He couldn't say yes all the time.

I really think that off-rink, he should be left alone unless it is an event or presentation. I thought about this a lot because I have actually walked by Yuzuru a few times in the two years and a bit since he has been in Toronto. I always try to act like I don't recognize him (although the first time I saw him my jaw kind of dropped). A person should be entitled to his space and privacy. He gives so much as it is. He is so generous. He needs his time-outs and, now with his being so recognizable, there are very few places that he can go without being bothered. it has to be tough. Fans need to be understanding. If they really care, they should more give him his space.

Just wanted to say you're an amazing fan! I wish others could think the way you do and are polite enough to consider his feelings.

Yes, Fan Entitlement is the perfect phrase to describe what some people felt they deserved. I think some people expect all athletes to act the same way, so if one athlete decided to stop and autograph/take pictures, then they think all athletes should do the same. And if they see a fan posting on SNS that they got any kind of personal interaction with the athlete, whether it is a handshake or an autograph, they expect similar results when they ask for it.

I imagine if this continues those two bodyguards that we hear about for the NHK trophy will accompany him on future competition too.

Thank you, residents of Sendai, for protecting the privacy of him and his family.

When I think about him interacting with fans I think about:

In Sochi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NaKgjjt6Lk He was polite and smiled, not very open but not in the slightest arrogant with the girls.

And

From 2012: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6krdqIDh2E (Caution: Might cause abnormal reactions, open at your own risk ... )

Also there's the fancam from PIW show at may of this year, where he acted really friendly, thanking everyone, trying their gifs, and high fiving the people who were far from him at the stands. This was a show that was designed for the skaters to interact with fans, I don't know how he would react at some extreme situation because I don't know him personally of course. I've seen at blogs people that met him at the streets, supermarket in Toronto etc and it seems that there was not problem. I do feel bad about the girl with the skates and I wouldn't discredit the episode that the father described, but I also think that he was at a place crowded by fans and this can be overwhelming. Sometimes I get the impression that in Japan top skaters are idolized too much (it's no different from how a few international fans treat him of course, but I think this is more alarming in Japan because of the popularity of figure skating there), example is how JSF decided to use for him bodyguards at NHK, I think it creates a barrier between the skater and the fans that doesn't quite happen for skaters from other nationalities, for the ones that at least are not quite as popular at their own countries as japanese skaters are. So I really wouldn't form a complete opinion about his personally based in those episodes at competitions because of the enviroment, especially because there are quite a lot of reports from fans and videos that say otherwise about how he acts with fans.

I´m gonna said thank God he doesn´t have any social media. It will be ugly.

While I love following social media active skaters I do think it's best for Yuzu to stay far away, but didn't he say in that Yahoo! acceptance speech that he searches himself a lot? Gawd, the things he must have accidentally found o_o. And I keep thinking about the pure horror that's going to be unleashed if he ever starts dating. Imagine the harassment that person will receive, they'll have to stay off the internet forever!

The thing is I don't think all of those people are his fans, some are probably there to collect autographs from any skaters they can find. Nothing particularly wrong with that, if they are being respectful to the skaters and don't expect what their want is a guarantee. So would they understand the situation of Yuzu? Maybe not. But if these people got mad of him because of this then that's too bad, one cannot please everybody. And if those that claimed to be his fans and is mad at him after this incident...that's great! Please move on! They are in the "fandom" for the wrong reason to begin with. Yes, figure skating needs more fans, but not these kind of fans.

I think the fact that he is not able to respond to the overwhelming support from all around must have bothered him, otherwise he would not have mention that in the interview right after coming back from the event. Yuzu is a smart boy and a very sensitive person. I trust his judgement and I believe in his caring heart.

After he finished the Free Skate in COC, Brian was ready to take him straight to the stretcher but he insisted to head to the K&C area instead. (Ok, I know some still shake heads at his decision to skate at COC but let's not get there for the sake of this discussion:hopelessness:) I remember reading later on Brian said something like, Yuzu didn't want people to worry about him so he didn't want to skip the K&C. Brain also said he sometimes care too much about his fans. Sorry it's been a while so I don't have the exact source of this, please feel free to correct me if my memory serves me wrong.

Also, Yuzuru it one of the skaters that have quite a lot of fans that just like him, not figure skating ... As if he is an entertainer. This is quite clear when you see some other pages dedicaded for him and see the commentaries, or even the commentaries at that FS magazine post at facebook. I choosed to only post here because that's the most active thread but I follow almost every thread and competition. It's no crime to only like him though, it's just necessary to be respectful. There's also a lot of people that have gotten into skating because of him so that's great.

That would be the hardest. As great as Mao and Dai have been, they have never said no to JSF's events. :slink: I highly doubt that Yuzuru can get a pass. That's JSF for you.

True. Dai-chan and Mao-chan had to do many ice shows in the past too, it almost seems to be an obligated duty for the top skaters to do so. Not to mention Yuzu also receives funding to train overseas, so I don't know if that adds extra pressure for him to give back more.

However, we do hear more recently from Brian in interviews about how Yuzu is overloaded with too many obligations during this summer which interfered with his training. Mind you, I think most of these interviews are for English media so the message might not get to JSF. Yuzu himself have also mentioned quite a few times how exhausting the summer had been for him and how his condition is not that good since the beginning of the season. So hopefully that's enough hints for JSF to spare him a break.

Well, Yuzu's name is not on the Japan SOI cast at this point yet! The tour will take place in Jan so if he is to participate I would think the organizers would announce it already! So that's a good start at least :cheer:

And horray to him not having a social media account!! He can set one up after he retires:laugh:

I know that I became a fan of him for his skating because the way he skated his SP in the Team Event at the Olympics pulled me in. Had me mesmerized. It made me a fan just like that.

No doubt it not easy for Yuzu to say no, I think partially because of he is funded by JSF, partially because he takes his responsibilities too seriously, and perhaps, partially because in Japanese culture it is simply hard to say no to the governing body. However, I hope Yuzu’s bumpy journey towards the GPF serves as a wake-up call to JSF.

Brian has revealed to the world that long before the GP events, Yuzu was frequently interrupted from his training for JSF events. It is not hard for the world to figure the lack of training led to his unsatisfactory performance at CoC (before the terrible accident). Through his struggle at NHK and triumph at the GPF, it has never been so clear that concentration on his training is the most important factor for his success (and Brian’s infamous hand written training paper says enough). Plus his health - he can’t be burnt out or injured in the ice shows before the real competitions.

If JSF is smart, they should know that Yuzu’s long term success is in their best interest. Of course, Japan has so many skating talents (God knows how many out there have not been known to the world), however, I doubt you can find the next Yuzuru Hanyu in the near future.

I wonder how the Japanese public reacts to the overscheduled ice shows for their top skaters. If the public opinion is powerful enough to change JSF’s course to do business, I guess the media could help Yuzu. No idea about Japanese politics though.

Photos from the Grand Prix Final

I've uploaded about 97 of photos I took of Yuzuru, at the Grand Prix Final in Barcelona --> HERE.
I find them pleasing, I hope others do too :-D

I mentioned it in the Grand Prix Final board too --> HERE

And if anyone's interested, I expect to upload galleries of many other GPF skaters too, when I have time.
