Very thin gold leaf is used. Gold leaves are used for cooking as well, and some kinds of sake contain gold leaves for festivals, anniversaries, etc.

Not particularly good for your health, but too much taking might be harmful. But it may be difficult to take too much gold in any case due to the cost problem![]()
Its also used quite commonly at high end restaurants as garnish. Also novelty foods
