2014 Skate Canada Ladies FS 11/01

I think the skate of the night is belong to satoko. She has great polish and her spins are to die for. I saw her TES drop from 67 to 63 so must have two or three <. I wonder if she can grow more power and high into her jump and she needs that explosive jump if she wants to compete with the russian ladies.

This is how I would have scored Ashely and Satoko in PCS.

Ashley
Skating Skills 7.00
Transition / Linking Footwork 5.50
Performance / Execution 8.00
Choreography / Composition 7.00
Interpretation 8.00

Satoko
Skating Skills 8.00
Transition / Linking Footwork 8.25
Performance / Execution 8.00
Choreography / Composition 8.50
Interpretation 8.50

Ashley skates faster, but comparing their step sequences suggests to me that it's not because of superior edge quality. She also doesn't display a wide enough range of skating skills in her program for me to credit her with a higher mark.

I really wish Ashley could fix the ur / 2ft problems. I would love to see her challenge a clean Gracie at nats and have a podium shot at worlds. I don't think any those things will happen if she can't get full credit for 3-3 or 2a-3. I lived her presence and confidence tonight!

Me too on everything you said!

I admire Pogo's jumping a lot and think she has other fine qualities, too. But in both the sp and lp, there is just a lot of messiness - and so, I can understand the scoring and placement, but just don't love the programs as they are. Miyahara stole my heart at this comp...can't wait to see more of her. and Yay for Courntey, too!

Anna deserved the gold. Nice jumps, a little labored in the spins, but she's really improved in one year.

Ashley was completely gifted. Yes, she sold "it" but her program was completely empty. It was all two footed skating. I don't understand how she has the highest transitions score when there wasn't a single transition in her program.

Satoko had the skate of the night. I love her musicality and interpretation, reminds me of Akiko. Her PCS was too low and she really should've gotten silver here.
Actually Satoko reminds me of Yukina Ota much more than Suzuki.

There were transitions in her program. Watch it again.

Again, Ashley received a ! on her 3F, but just one of them. Are they saying she's taking off too much on a flat instead of an inside edge?

Anna getting 62 in PCS, how is that possible if Kanako got only 58?

It's called Using PCS as placement markers, just as the Presentation Marks did the same thing back in the days of 6.0.

A clear case of sour grapes. Those who can't do, teach, a noble occupation, those who can't do or teach, complain. :disapp:

Nice passive-aggressive diss of those here who disagree with the scores and, I'm guessing, with your assessment.

Anna deserved to win. But Ashely program was not as good as it looked. I love Moulin Rouge but I was not impressed by how it was choreographed. A couple of jumps looked under rotated. So I place Miahara ahead of Ashley Wagner. Actually Miahara had the skate of the night, but she has the handicap of being too small.

wagner ,her PSC is too high, very few transitions and as almost same choreography as last year. so boring .
i guess miyahara deserves silver .

Nice to see two US women in the top 4.

Pogo did great, but I'm sick of "Firebird" already. Her tech content was amazing.

Yes, agreed! Firebird is becoming my least favorite warhorse and I really don't like warhorse music for skating.

Congrats to Anna. :) She's young, she has time to get better. Not everyone is so polished and mature at 16.

^^ But then Pogo should not be getting such huge scores on PCS. Even her technique is a bit sloppy and unrefined. The judges are blinded by her beauty, and that whole Russian baby ballerina hype. To me Radionova has more potential overall than Pogo.

Eh, Pogo is over-rated on PCS and even though she lands the jumps, her technique is way sloppy. Plus Pogo doesn't have the speed and polish exhibited by Satoko who indeed had the skate of the night. Pogo was also over-scored on PCS in the sp. I think Ashley should have had even higher PCS in both segments, and end up with a win overall, with Satoko in second and Pogo in third. Alena was too tentative on her jumps in the fp, but judges were quite harsh on her.

Hicks has always had amazing speed and huge jumps. She's trying to improve on presentation, but she still lacks connection with the music and the audience. If Hicks was Russian, her poor presentation skills would probably be overlooked, and she'd get more PCS for her strengths.
