2015 Worlds Men Short Program March 27

I'm old enough to remember when flowers were tossed to the ice in appreciation to the skaters. In 1976 it took a long time to clear the ice from all the flowers thrown at Dorothy Hamill. They didn't have a Kiss and Cry back in those days. The skaters just stood by the boards and waited for their scores. Her arms were completely full of flowers. If I remember, skaters back then sent them to the hospitals.

The plushy animals, while less likely to leave debris on the ice aren't really practical. I remember reading an article where the skaters couldn't always donate them because of sanitation concerns at children's hospitals... so they ended up with bags and bags of them.

If I'm ever at a major international competition, I'm going to start a new trend. I'm going to toss gift cards. I bet the skaters will like that better than a life-sized stuffed bear.

I had thought this too before someone correct me lol.

It's only true if the gold medalist is the only skater representing that country. Japan has 3 men, so the top 2 of them have to have a combined placement of 13 or less even if one wins.

In 2012, Savchenko/Szolkowy won the world title but Germany only got 2 spots the next year because the other German teams were 13th and 14th. In 2011, Savchenko/Szolkowy also won but Germany got 3 spots this time because the second team was 12th for a total of 13.

They should have sent Daisuke or Shoma instead of Kozuka and Mura.

Daisuke is retired and Shoma choose to focus on JWC.

I remember reading somewhere that only the points from one ISU championships would be counted towards the world ranking so for Shoma who's in a country with a deep field, it was probably better to focus on JR Worlds instead

edit: ah my bad just realized this was Murakami, he's inconsistent too so it's not safe to rely on him either
Please let me excuse about the flag.

If you talking about the flag with red and yellow rising sun, it is not “the rising sun flag", which Japanese Imperial army had used during WW2.

“The rising sun flag” has to be white and red, just same as national flag, but that one in the video was yellow and red and some characters on it.

The flag is one of “Tairyo-bata(大漁旗)”, which is traditional Japanese fisherman's flags, originally flown by boats to signify a large catch of fish, and often used sports event as a banner. There are various designs for the Tairyo-bata, and that rising-sun is just one of the symbol along with wave, fishes, and sea weeds, etc., as you can see here.

About that flag in the video, I can see the “Onagawa(女川)”, the name of the Tsunami attacked city on the flag, so that flag must be used for one of the ships destroyed in there.
I think, people with the flag just want to encourage Hanyu and also people in Tsunami-striken area, and have no idea to humiliate people in China or Korea. (but I admit it is naïve to use that rising-sun design in China.)

Thanks! I only saw it in LQ because my school internet is not very reliable, this is very informative so thanks for sharing.

Poor Kovtun. It took so long for the children to pick up all the toys for Hanyu and Kovtun couldn't really do anything on the ice before he skated. I suppose he did get more than enough PCS sympathy points from the judges at the end, but it's really bad luck for him (and for Javi tomorrow) to skate after Hanyu.

I knit gifts. Like I made socks for Jason for when I saw him at Skate America.

Now you've gone and done it.

Now I have to stop and weep the we no longer get to see him. I would gladly watch him over nearly everyone else here, including Yuzu and Javier.
You know, Takahashi will be going to school in the US(not sure when or if he is already) and he is said to be staying with a host family.. You could be his host family.

I actually think he simply got over excited himself after great start unfortunately

To be fair I think the ice today has some problems, some event is just jinxed. Just take the most consistent male skater and they might just falter. Javi did okay but he was skating very cautiously.

Cant wait to see the competition on our tv tonight, although Kozuka and Mura placements :drama:
And Misha Ge top ten!

Sadly, I live in the South, so the opportunities to see him on the ice are non-existent. If I could watch him skate every day, I might consider it. :)

..watching some performances again. The ice is so freaking hard. The men sound like they're trying to skate on rock.

He was really trying to avoid all the small children on the ice. Wasn't easy to do. Those children were exhausted and falling all over the place carrying Hanyu's toys, which I thought was a bit over the top. It does not seem quite fair for the skater after him, though I don't know what can be done about that. Hanyu is the only situation I would call "out of control" this Worlds.

I understand your point. I guess they should allow skater to take the ice after all the toys are taken away

While I am sure they would like that. I would not be surprised if Ronald McDonald house is happy to accept donations of things like socks, underwear, pajamas, t-shirts, etc. All would be things that could be thrown on the ice but also practical. I would not be surprised if they see parents that refuse to go home and change and are very grateful for some clean stuff to wear.

If not Ronald, I am pretty sure that homeless shelters/goodwill are frequently looking for donations of unused underwear as it is something that does not get donated often. I know it sounds weird, but at the same time I think it would be a great idea for a skater to request instead of stuffed animals. You still get to throw stuff, it is not going to damage the ice or make a mess, but it is also something practical that could lead to helping people.

I've checked the protocols and I seriously don't see where Hanyu has been over-scored or Javier disadvantaged: Hanyu's jump's layout enables him to gather more points than Javier (he has two jump passes in the second half while Javier has only one), his 3A was to die for while Javier did have a difficult take off, he definitely is the better spinner of the two and the sharpness and the speed of his skating today was quite impressive. Javier skated with ease and a lot of presence on the ice but if you look at the details Hanyu has the edge.

I'm guessing you must not have seen Javi's 4S that should have been straight 3's across the board instead of mostly 2's and some 3's. Thank goodness no one gave a 1 otherwise I would have gone there myself and whack the judges myself. I remember how indignant most people here were back when Chan would fall and still get those PCS and high scores after falling yet I cannot remember a time Chan scored over 90 much less a 95 in an SP with a fall.
