I'm old enough to remember when flowers were tossed to the ice in appreciation to the skaters. In 1976 it took a long time to clear the ice from all the flowers thrown at Dorothy Hamill. They didn't have a Kiss and Cry back in those days. The skaters just stood by the boards and waited for their scores. Her arms were completely full of flowers. If I remember, skaters back then sent them to the hospitals.
The plushy animals, while less likely to leave debris on the ice aren't really practical. I remember reading an article where the skaters couldn't always donate them because of sanitation concerns at children's hospitals... so they ended up with bags and bags of them.
If I'm ever at a major international competition, I'm going to start a new trend. I'm going to toss gift cards. I bet the skaters will like that better than a life-sized stuffed bear.
