Evgeni Plushenko

I'm really sad and nervous. But I'm mad at him!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was in shock when he wanted to come back.... and I was right. I said not once he forgets the competitions and skates on shows, makes beautiful shows like the Snow King...

Thanks @gallavich for that info.
He seems to act sensible (he experiences pain and consults his doctor). It sounds as if the artificial disc(s) (has he more than one?) are ok, but that there are new problems in his spine.
Maybe his competitive career is really over now, we'll see. I wish him all the best no matter what.

I agree. It's not his age, but the fact that his problem is not going away and only getting worse when he puts more stress on the body. I understand that competing is in his blood and it's hard to walk away. But everyone has to retire eventually. If this isn't the time, then when?? Bring Snow King to the world...show us creative exhibitions like he used to do. That's what I want.

Yes, I hope if he doesnt't listen to the fans or doctor, his wife will presuade him.

Plushenko will not take part in the test skate to be held in Sochi from September 12th-13th. It seems that something is wrong with his back.

Isn't that basically status quo at this point? Is his back really ever going to be fully healthy again? At what point do you just accept that something is permanently wrong with your back?

I really hope he finds some shinny object to distract him from skating before he manages to do even more permanent damage to his body, especially since it is such a lovely body. He clearly needs an outlet for all his mental and physical energy and his creative soul - I hope he finds something that gives him joy without risking his spine.

Maybe Brian Orser needs to adopt him, hand him off a promising young skater to coach. I could see Plushy enjoying not just coaching, but being with the skater to grow and blossom and develop. Some of the clips of him with a young Elizaveta are so cute, especially when he is ignoring Mishin. He may need to find someone who he can coach for years and years. Maybe he needs to find his own version of what Rohene Ward found in Jason Brown - someone to work with for year to produce something wonderful.

I have no idea why you are so picky on my wording here. Before this news broke, he had been skating in shows overseas like a normal person. Could he skate with a broken spine then, tell me? Because I was not so sure about the reliability of some news source at that time, I chose the word "seems". Before posting should I check every single word I wrote to avoid offending some people like you? What's the fuss of my meticulously-worded expression here? Your overly strong reaction is really low & ridiculous!

I was not picking on you at all, nor was i "offended" just being philosophical about his situation and yours was the one that prompted the musing. I apologize that your wording elicited thought... I actually thought that was the point of the forum. I assure you nothing in my post was intended as any form of comment on how your worded your post, nor do I think you should have done anything differently - I took your post at face value and responded to the situation in general just as I assumed you were participating in the discussion in general as well as contributing news. Honestly had you not reacted this ways I would have evaluated your post as being an accurate and effective one, but given that I seem to have done something wrong in replying, I have to conclude that I misconstrued something and am too clueless to know a good post from bad.

Actually I did assume there was still "something wrong" with his spine during the shows, just like i thought the same during Sochi. He has back issues, it was my understanding they were ongoing issues that he has to keep dealing with and has been dealing with for a long while.

Though thank you for calling me low and ridiculous - i assure you I needed the insults! You can rest assured in knowing that you successful stung me as I am sure was your intent.

It's a question, isn't it? I mean, the man keeps so busy with shows - some of them his own, such as Kings on Ice, and the forthcoming second installment of the Snow King - plus various other activities that make one wonder when he finds the time to sleep? He does want to coach, and has already taught some children's master classes - and seems to enjoy the experience. He plans to open a skating school And yet none of this seems to distract him from the desire to compete - or be able to replace that experience. I suppose it's the adrenaline... and the challenge... of wanting to achieve something... unique?

Maybe he likes pushing himself too much? Maybe he needs to challenge himself somehow. I could see how for some exhibitions would not be enough to feel challenging to oneself. Perhaps he should try to climb Mt Everest or something, that would give himself a personal challenge that he would feel good about, but also likely not kill or paralyze him. Or we could send him off to some tropical island with Elvis Stojko who can get him into racing cars or something - Elvis manged to find other ways to keep himself busy and challenged - and he seems to have a similar need to keep pushing his own body.

I think on coaching/schools he may have one that needs to stick with it for awhile to really get the full enjoyment out of it. I suspect once he finds some students he connects with and gets to watch them grow and blossom, he will find it more rewarding than just giving lessons. I could see him really enjoying the process of taking a skater from doubles all the way to landing their first quad - and something like that takes years of investment.

Or maybe he just has too much energy and gets uncomfortable when he is not training hard and often. Suddenly burning half as many calories in a day might not be easy for some people to adjust to. He may just need to keep busy and finds training the easiest way for him to keep balance.

I just hope if he comes back he does not further exacerbate his health issues. How long before something does the type of damage that permanently affects his mobility not just for skating? That is what scares me. At what point is the spinal cord itself in danger of long term damage?

His love for the sport is endearing though - I can't image how hard it must be for his loved ones to have to discourage something that brings such joy and passion to his life. And when you have reach the level he has, how do you find things that don't pale in comparisons? Maybe he will be invited to dancing with the Stars, he likely would enjoy that and it would at least keep him reasonably safe and occupied for a year.

Yikes, I get distracted from Plushy news for a few days and all Heck breaks loose! :jaw:

But I agree with the above! Plushy just loves skating so much...although not sure scaling Everest would be the safest thing. Maybe he should take up sky-diving nothing more adrenline inducing than jumping from a plane I'd imagine!

Whatever happens with the skating though, I'm sure he'll make the right decision.

I am not at all intending to sting you with my overly emotional words, but I really felt offended by your philosophical reply at that point. Actually it is not me, but Plushenko himself who claimed to be a healthy man before all things took a sudden turn. Sorry for making you feel bad with my biting reaction. Anyway we all wish him well, so let's shake hands and forget all these verbal misunderstandings! :)

@Stitch - You reminded me of this Elvis Stojko/Plushy photo from Sochi:

https://twitter.com/Therealestojko/status/433500813177421824/photo/1

They seem to get along well together - especially as Stojko supported Plushy after Vancouver; and Plushy has mentioned how, when he first competed in the senior GP, Stojko came up to him and wished him good luck, which must be a very cherished memory as the interviews I saw it mentioned in where only a few years back - anyway, but I digress... Maybe he should get together with Stojko, and do some race car driving - maybe golf just isn't scratching the itch.;) On the other hand, I remember him saying - before Vancouver, I think - that he'd tried driving fast cars and all manner of activities, but not got the adrenaline rush from them that he craved... Sigh. Maybe it just simply is love of the sport...

Well, we'll see what happens...

Plushy is underground. Absolute no news on him since 4 days. This is very rare. Yana posted these pics and videos about Plushy's dacha next to St. Petersburg. If you remember that big white house by the lake. Probably they are there.

Plushy received twitts and messages from fans. Some of them. It seems most of fans agree with us.

@EvgeniPlushenko Zhenya: no need for quads, for medals. Its your charisma, that makes us emotionally happy and satisfied Take care https://twitter.com/drkrie1/status/636581074789900288

@EvgeniPlushenko Please know so many of us love and support you. My wish is that you will post a video on Instagram [in English & Russian] if you feel it is important for your fans to know more of your situation with your back. Seeing your face would help us understand your feelings and prepare us to go on this journey of recovery with you. I have been with you since the Sochi Olympics and your 13th surgery. As much as I want to see you realize your dream of returning to competition, I will support you if you decide not to return for the sake of your health. Nothing is more important to me than you having a healthy life, Zhenya ;) Lots of love and your army of fans hope to hear more from you soon. https://twitter.com/DreamyPopLover/status/636634833075179520

EvgeniPlushenko Jack, please, think 100 times, if for the sake of an uncertain future in the competition, need another risky .->
If you need it for your own health, a normal life with family and appearances on the show, do it - but not riskuy->
You have still a lot of luck and do not tempt fate further, we are afraid. We will support your entire solution -> but did not play behold with your life and our nervyma. We love you, Jack! <3 https://twitter.com/cekoni/status/636636010722525184

I really like him, but this just might be too much. As it seems, the hadrest thing for him is to stop. Not to give up, that's something else. But to accept, that he won't be less if he stops competeing. I'm pretty sure that all of us would love him as a "retired" skater, just as well as now.
He would still be the one and only Evgeni Plushenko.
He has to face himself, and that is the hardest thing.
We can only wish all the best for him.

@EvgeniPlushenko We are all worried about u! Fans support u in everything but most of us think u have to retire. Just because of u and Sasha https://twitter.com/lala630312/status/636551279351873536

Wasn't there something about "no physical activity" or something? D'you all think he's bored out of his skull as of yet - or is he doing the feline thing, and sleeping his way through it?;)

2nd September? That's soon - is he due back in Israel?

Both of you are right. No physical activity and he will go to Israel 2nd September. I thought no pics with friends, his family, no pics with Sasha etc. Just the chickens and goats. Yes, probably he is sleeping. ;)
