David Bowie died on January 10 after a battle with cancer, his representative confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 69.

"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer."

The influential singer-songwriter and producer excelled at glam rock, art rock, soul, hard rock, dance pop, punk and electronica during his eclectic 40-plus-year career. He just released his 25th album, Blackstar, on January 8, which was his birthday.

Another music legend passed away. It is quite shocking to me, since he seemed to live forever. I didn't know how innovative he was until watching Velvet Goldmine directed by Todd Haynes. I was fascinated by the whole image and music used in the film so searched anything related to it. It is deeply connected to David Bowie's glam rock and androgynous appearance although he disliked any association with the film.

Yes, very sad news to wake up to. :( We lost a true legend today. May he rest in peace.

Very sad to hear this. He's been in the news lately with his play "Lazarus" selling out off B'way and his last release so this was a bit of a shock as he kept his illness private.

He was an icon, a genius and influenced so many musicians and artists. He will be greatly missed. RIP David Jones.

ETA: I happen to work about a block from his residence in NY so I went during lunchtime. There's a makeshift memorial with album covers, candles and flowers and a lot of media and fans just standing in disbelief. Very sad.

I was in shock when I read the news this morning, but keep his illness private was the best thing to do.
It's funny... I can't remember precisely when and how I begun to like his music and I don't understand a considerable part of his work, but I love it anyway, it's fascinating and beautiful in an unique, strange way. Go in peace, David.

The same thing has happened at a mural of him in his hometown, Brixton.

I wouldn't say I was a fan as such, but I did appreciate how good his music was.

The music scene has just lost one of it's big stars. Hearing so many of his songs over the past day or two really reminds you of just how talented he was.

You know, for somebody who was so flamboyant when he was younger, you have to admire him for the way he kept his illness so quiet.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Just as a side note. Celebrity Big Brother started last week, and David's ex-wife Angie is one of the housemates. Thankfully, the programme makers had the decency to tell her that he had died.

But, they then went and broadcast the aftermath of her being told. :jaw:

Channel 5 have done some questionable things over the years, but this is way over the line.

Totally disgraceful.
