Yes, it was! The children in the apartment above me are still jumping in joy!

Same with me, I was on the Metro to Copacabana after RG and EVERYONE was jumping, dancing and screaming of joy in every part of the city

That match was such a nail biter. I really wanted Brazil to win at home, so that penalty shoot out nearly did me in. What a fabulous moment for them and for Neymar. When he walked up to take that shot, it just seemed like destiny to me. That was the moment of the day for me.

the goal for canada was 20 medals...

we will most likely end at 22.... track and field tonight was not so good... 3 4th places... SIGH
It's weird... Almost every time I watch a sport there is a Canadian winning a medal. Also the Swedish commentator considered(during athletisc) how well the Canadian athletes were doing. Canada must have done better than expected... or?

Sweden has done a lot worse than expected. Many have not performed their best. So big hugs and congratulations to Jenny Rissveds winning gold today. She is young and was in Rio to get experience

Now on to women's handball final, France-Russia

USA has Matthew Centrowitz in the final of the 1500m tonight. I hope he can medal, or at least put in a good show. There was once such a proud tradition of middle distance running in this country. Not so much any longer.

To be honest, I don't know this runner. While I'm not a huge track follower any longer, that is still astonishing. American milers used to be household names in the USA.

Middle distance probably had more glamour than the sprints, to be honest.

Replying to my own post. I feel like Nostradamus! What prophecy!

I am so pleased for him, and for USA. First gold in this prestigious event event in 108 years!

He ran a courageous race. Really went out hard when it was time, and didn't wilt under the pressure. I'm sure the Africans were shocked when he didn't crack. They had to have expected it based on our track record. Also, a medal for New Zealand! I have relatives who will be proud.

Matt Centrowitz has been gaining a name for himself internationally the last few years (he was 4th in the 1500 last Oly) but has been well known among distance running circles in the MD/DC area since his high school days. His dad was a two time Olympian out of Oregon, and his mom was a sprinter I believe. Still, from interviews I've seen, they encouraged their kids to do other things besides running, like play musical instruments, and Matt Jr played soccer his first two years of high school. But when he did finally start running he improved very quickly and won states and Nike nationals. So we all knew he was destined for greatness one day!

America still way out in front. But it is looking increasingly unlikely that they will finish up with double the medals of anybody else, as China is now up to 70 medals.

Great Britain has closed slightly on China to be 4 medals behind, rather than the 5 they were yesterday.

Germany’s advance continues. They have now got ahead of Japan and France on Total medal count, and are now up to 5[SUP]th[/SUP] place.

In fact, it means that Russia, Germany, Japan and France now occupy the same positions in both versions of the table.

Australia, Italy, Canada, South Korea and the Netherlands remain in the same positions as they were yesterday.

Brazil moves up to 13[SUP]th[/SUP], with New Zealand in 14[SUP]th[/SUP]. But, these 2 countries are actually on the same number of total medals as the Netherlands. So, there could be some changes.

Sorry, no time for any more analysis, because I managed to mis-count four times! And the MotoGP races will be starting shortly.

But, if I get the chance, I’ll add some in later on, after racing is over.

Russia and Germany are going head to head. Same with GB and China, I'm really curious how it ends. I'm still impressed by how small country like Netherlands have so many many medals. Amazing.

I just realized that Austria and Portugal has only one medal. Also I read that this Olympics are the worst in whole history for Finland. :(

I've watched a few talk shows about Masayo Imura, coach of the Japanese synchro swimming team. She is called Spartan and known for pushing the swimmers to the edge. There was a part when the host asked her if she would let her students put off diet for their birthdays. She said something like the swimmers know what it takes to realise their goals and they don't mind dieting. The hosts are like "Huh" :eek:hwell: But the reaction of the whole Japan when receiving the bronze is very moving. They took turns hanging their medals on the stern coach's neck.

Bah, I still don't get over how the whole synchro thing ends too soon :scratch2:.

Bad for Finland, but not so much worse than the last 20 years or so I think.

Here's the medals for the Nordic countries 2016:

Denmark 15 (swimming, men’s handball, cycling, rowing, wrestling, canoe, badminton, women’s 400 m hurdles and sailing)
Sweden 11 (mostly Sarah :hap85: swimming, cycling, shooting, golf, equestrian, wrestling and women's football :yay:)
Norway 4 (rowing, wrestling and women’s handball )
Finland 1 (women’s boxing)
Iceland 0 :( Oh, Iceland used to be so good at handball(silver at 2008 olympics).

I bet Denmark has most medals compared to their population(5,7 millions)... or?

ETA Just saw New Zeeland has a population of only 4,471 millions and 18 medals, so I suppose they win

Wow, that's amazing for Denmark and New Zealand! I knew Denmark is not a big country, but didn't realize it's like 1/7 of Poland population. I had no idea about New Zealand though.

That is wonderful that so many countries won medals! It seems that 10 countries won their first ever gold here.

I'm very proud of the GB team. This is their most successful games ever for numbers of medals and in fact they have won 67, 2 more than in the home games in 2012! The country is pretty overwhelmed by their success. Lots of candidates for our annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year!

I love how the opening and closing ceremonies give us a chance to immerse ourselves in another country's culture. I love the spirit and music of Brazil! I'm also digging the organic feel of the scaled down ceremonies while I'm still completely wowed by the people involved. Big thumbsup to Rio for these games
