Patrick Chan

and yes Mango for the longest time, Patrick would do 4t-3t, then 4t... he would open his LPS like that... I think that was the case for all 3 years he won WC but I could be wrong... I think he wants to start with the combo... and I am okay with that.

Where I am not okay is when he does do the combo in the LP. If he is going to only have 1 quad, have it as the first jump... do the 3-3 combo in the second half. At least that 3T gets .43 bonus LOL just kidding ;)

4everchan I am only sure that the 4S will come from that 3S and that 2F was meant to be a 3F, and somewhere along the line he lost a 3T. It does seem like he lost it on the opening 4T. He's done that before, right? Maybe he needs to not start off with a combo. Patrick has pledged to improve his performance. From this article:

By the way, we've seen Javier's FS at Japan Open. Protocols here.

Thanks for linking us to the article. It's great to get Patrick's own assessment of the FS. :agree:

It reinforces my sense that he's more philosophical about this one. He has the long view, and has clearly met some personal milestones for improved progress at this point in the season. He's comfortable and confident, which makes me feel so too.

I'm personally not too concerned about calculating BVs to see if he can top the podium in this year's Worlds. I think that all will be well as long as he's on the podium this year, and everything that I saw this weekend indicates he will be there.

Marina Zoueva has a history of taking the long view in helping skaters to develop. She says takes them as they come and then works with them to achieve their shared goals. She knows that for Patrick it's an OGM. She wouldn't have taken on this role with him IMO if she weren't fully committed to that. And as a Canadian citizen she may wish to be part of the team that overcomes the mens' OGM gap for Canada. So, I would be surprised if she were to encourage any short cuts that could put the plan to achieve that at risk in order to ensure another golden victory at Worlds this year.

Here's a 2014 interview with Marina from the other forum that I find helpful in understanding her approach....

Really like Patrick's FS!
I will watch it every morning and learn from it (Everything).
Another masterpiece.
Vastly different from his Chopin masterpiece. which is very very very difficult to present the subtle difference with 2 piano pieces.
Hope we can have a clean version.
Thank you Patrick for continuing skating such gift for skating fans.

TGee I am not as confident as you that we will see Patrick on the World podium this year, but I hope he accomplishes some if not all of the goals he has in mind. If he can do more quads and improve the success rate and quality of his jumps then for me he will have had a successful season.

With two quads, one has to be a combo. The bonus is superceded by the importance of securing the credits for both quads. Naturally and wisely, he would do a combo if the first quad was solid but, missing that, he would do it with the second quad. He has done this a few times and amazed commentators how he would recover from any poor quad landing and sail down the rink to do a perfect 4T3T. This time around, the second quad is in the second half so he has to keep it in his mind longer about adding on a 3T. Ditto for 3As this season. So plans B take a little more mental energy than before. I'm sure he will adjust well to this little mental task so it would not be a serious distraction.

I will go read his interview now. I expect to find him relaxed, at ease and confident as he has shown himself to be. In fact, he has been growing in this direction for the last couple of years. He has arrived mentally. The extrinsic manifestations will follow.

At last, I finished updating my Finlandia Trophy blog post (or so I think). This was my first time blogging one of Patrick's competitions, so it's been a fun learning experience.

My thanks to all of you for reading! :)

that clapping had nothing to do with the music... i was like what the clap !!!!!!!!

The audience just wanted to show support and encouragement. There are times clapping is greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, the clapping really ruined Patrick's music and probably his concentration and rhythm for the 4T to some extent.

Long jumpers and high jumpers too often signal for clapping from the audience to aid their rhythm of the jump including the run up.

yup i agree :) i am talking though about the SP.. if he i only doing one quad there, he perhaps should tag the 3T after the 3Lz :) however, perhaps it's risky if he has a great quad toe at the beginning, why not get credit for the combo early on?

IMO : those bonuses are silly anyways : it was to prevent frontloading.. not we are stuck with back loading :( MEH

sure... at ACI : we clapped when skaters got up from falls as well etc... but that was spontaneous and cheerful clapping, providing encouragement... the crowd here tried to clap in rhythm to a piece that is so smooth and lyrical... ruined it...

To all of Skate Canada goers ;) DO NOT CLAP UNTIL HE IS DONE :) lol

I watched Patrick's two programs again.... I like how they contrast one another. I am beyond excited for the season to come.

Favourite choreo moment : right after the LOOP... Patrick's mini steps on the music... makes me so emotional... (last year, it was the beginning of the e minor prelude after the spin that did it for me... that and the 3S timed to the music)

What choreo moment did you prefer from either program?

Yeah... I think ours are much better. But hmmm... it does give me an idea.

Sooo tired... could have slept 10 hours. I'll have to start taking days off after Patrick's competitions, lol.

4everchan, I'll try respond to your question above later.

Forgot to add: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

Looking forward to reading about all of your favourite moments in the LP :)

Want to share this important new interview with Marina Zoueva, on her coaching of Patrick, that appeared earlier today in a Russian commentary by Andrey Simonenko at sovsport.ru. Marina also responded to questions about Nathan Chen at the end.

FS Gossips provided an English extract of the 'Chan and Chen' section of Simonenko's Saturday roll-up at http://fs-gossips.com/marina-zueva-chan-and-chen/

Hesitating to take this on myself, I'm waiting to see if FS Gossips will provide a translation of today's longer piece.

On "Finland Trophy" tournament Marina Zueva brought his new students, and this is not the dancers, which in recent years, mainly achieved success famous coach. Her group is now trained three-time Canadian champion Patrick Chan and the winner of the final "Grand Prix" Junior 2015 American Nathan Chen.
"Patrick is necessary to create a comfortable atmosphere"

- News about the transition for you in Chan's group, one of the best singles of the world, shocked the world figurnokatatelny. How did this happen?
- Patrick rode with us at the rink in the summer, and then decided to continue training in our group. He liked the atmosphere, like our coaching staff - and he decided to stay with us.

- What did he ask you to teach?
- Patrick is so complex athlete with remarkable career, it is difficult to say what it is possible to learn more ... Rather, it is necessary to create an atmosphere in which they can show their capabilities.

- Provide a comfortable state.
- Yes. With a comfortable condition and technical stability comes to training. In the case of the atmosphere prevailing with athletes - it's basic. Do not forget that Patrick came back after the break, at which time a new generation of singles.

- We know that Patrick has difficulty with triple axel. Trying to solve this problem?
- Of course, we are working on it. And he works Patrick. It is important not only advice the coach, but also the execution. A lot of work with video.

- You have the coaching role in working with Chan distributed?
- While we all follow Patrick. Rather, the case. He has long been one coach, and now three.

- You, Johnny Jones and Oleg Epstein?
- Yes. Of course, Oleg has experience with the singles. He worked with the Olympic champion Evan Lysacek in 2010, worked with Gracie Gold. I have all the previous experience - in singles and pairs. She worked with Alexander Fadeyev, Anna Kondrashov with the same Gracie Gold.

- A dance?
- A dance appeared only in Canada. Prior to this, only a single and pair. And in America, I coached sports couples -chempionov Canada Kristy and Kris Wirtz. And his son, Fyodor Andreyev, raised. So it is not a new area for me - I just came back to it ten years later. Of course, the technique is a little different from Patrick's more American than Russian. But we did not break. Tunable, look, it's better to apply the technique to Patrick.

- Chan great artist. Already we felt that diamond in your hands?
- Of course. Now he came to us with ready-made programs, choreography staged by David Wilson. And music to skate wrote Eric Radford, two-time world champion in pairs figure skating. He played the piano, was added to this cello and orchestra. Very soulful music - both emotionally and rhythmically comes to figure skating. Still, because the skater wrote it - put it in the love and knowledge. Patrick chose it himself - and he takes it to heart.

- You once came up with a program for Mahler's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir in advance. For Patrick already have ideas for the next season?
- The idea that Patrick I will have to train, it is too new. So I just started to make sense of it, to think.

- Tasks of Federation of Canada has delivered you?
- The Federation always puts the problem, but first of all he feels skater opportunities. And not an easy task, but doable.

- Gold World Championships and the Olympic Games?
- First, Patrick should be to catch up. Feel confidence. He said recently - me for 24 years. And I see that this is 24. Of course, it will be his third Olympics, but Evgeni Plushenko at four Olympics medals won. So anything is possible, if the entire approach is reasonable, competently and with love. I've always been a fan of Patrick's. He has contributed to the figure skating, followed him - tried to ride as Patrick, perform as Patrick, the emotions, the soul.
"Nathan Chen in its capabilities - leader"

- The beginning of this season has shown that the tendency to execute as many as possible quadruple jump will not go away.
- Patrick regained quadruple Salchow. With this two quadruple toe loop. It is necessary to do them consistently and cleanly. Plus components. Implementation of programs in his unique. It is every time in training leaves the impression - happiness watching.

- Compete with Yuzuru Hanyu, who started the quad rittberger, really?
- Really. And in my group are now trained skater who performs four different quads - Nathan Chen. He came to us as a group to improve the presentation of the figure skating - the steps, turns, expression. Learn how to put the soul in the execution of the program. He is currently working on this and slowly regains his quad after injury.

- Successfully?
- Before leaving for Finland, we conducted a rehearsal of the competition - Nathan laminated purely arbitrary program with four different quads. Toe loop, Salchow, Lutz, flip. It is unique, this is not yet in the world. Now it is necessary to bring to the competition. The credit for this entire Rafael Arutyunyan, who did a great technical work. In terms of features at Nathan leadership positions. Now it is necessary to raise the second estimate.

- So long ago you did not have singles - and now two of them, and what!
- The confluence of circumstances of life. But happy. Of course, to see such a talent like Patrick, every day to see how he rides, this limits the possibility to have a brilliant, helping Nathan demonstrate its capabilities - all is happiness.

- The dancers are not jealous?
- They come to the competition, saying even the competition does not want to watch the singles after our workouts. They train together. And the dancers see what burden placed on singles, what kind of work they perform. Every day they rolled in one workout short program, on the other arbitrary. With all the jumps.
"I will certainly fight for Sinitsyn and Katsalapova"

- Your students Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov returned to Russia and is now practicing with Oleg Volkov. Which mode you continue to work with them?
- They have a plan, they should follow it. Of course, it is difficult to be responsible for what they do, nothing can replace live training and live chat. But we are in touch with Oleg Volkov.

- You'll take them to the "Grand Prix"?
- I'll be in China, which will also act Maia and Alex Shibutani. Nikita is now undergoing rehabilitation after surgery. It was made in early April, and it turned out that the problem is more complex than thought. Therefore, the rehabilitation period took longer and the season we started much later than they should have. But I am very pleased that the program that we have set, we get experts gave positive feedback. Now the main task of the children and Oleg - dash them.

- In preparation for the main starts - European and world championships - a waste of time-critical?
- Firstly, it is necessary for them to get there, to qualify. National championship will be very serious, it is necessary to be ready. Before the "Grand Prix" Victoria and Nikita will be performing at the stage of the Cup of Russia, I hope it will help them get in shape. They are in a more difficult situation than other groups - due to surgery, which pulled the beginning of preparation for the season. At least three months. But I am a fan of Russian athletes with all my heart, and I will definitely continue to fight for this pair.
