Your opinion on Skate Canada

I attended both SA & SC this year, back-to-back. I had a great time at SA. As for SC, not so much.

Great feedback here sabinfire! I am sure Skate Canada and the organizing committee would welcome your perspective! Even to share it on their facebook or web page. Getting bums in seats in this sport is not an easy feat and it's the little things and attention to details, that can make or break, "an experience".

Having been a customer relations manager for an international company, I know that they would appreciate hearing from you.

When I learned that SA was in Chicago, I briefly entertained the idea of going because it was within driving distance for me. CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, but my initial research indicated that an all-event package was $600usd and up. That ended my plans right there!!!

I know at Skate Canada events (eg Nationals, so it'll probably be in the same range for SC) packages are $200cdn top tier. You're probably in a better financial situation than me but I know I won't be going to any events in the US anytime soon!

SC tickets have been hard to come by in recent years so I wouldn't mind if there was more available for the locals.

Not sure where you heard that. All event tickets at Skate America were $125 USD. Club section tickets were $175 USD. The VIP package, with food and a meet and greet (I think) was $400 USD , if I recall correctly.

I never went to any SC, only to SA, but from my past experience and TV observation I prefer SA for one particular reason: on SA 2/3 seats are empty. So you buy the cheapest seats available: right under the roof one kilometer from the rink, but during the events you can sit anywhere you want, even almost directly on the rink. That's what we did and it worked!
From what I see on TV Skate Canada are much more packed, so it would be impossible. :)

I hear you Manitou and the only thing I would say, is SC is normally hosted in secondary arenas (5,000-7,000 seating capacity) versus SA at 10,000-20,000 venues. Bottom line, with a smaller space, there is normally not a bad seat in the house. SC 2017 will be in Regina,Sk., in a similar smaller sized venue.

I went online to SA website and that's what I thought I saw. And the reason I didn't question it further was that I recalled a poster saying that his 2014 US National all-event package in Boston(?) costed him $1000 (front row). My 2014 Cdn Nationals front row costed me $200.

Next year SA will be in Lake Placid. For me, Lake Placid has a certain mystique to it and it'll be a dream to go. I'd even try to ignore the exchange rate.

If I can I'll try to do a little more searching to clear up the mystery of where I got that info about the ticket prices.

I attended both SA & SC this year, back-to-back. I had a great time at SA. As for SC, not so much.

My first (and biggest) complaint was in my section of seating. I sat in section 7, opposite judges side, great view from center. Unfortunately, I quickly discovered there was some type of 'VIP lounge' area on the upper level behind section 7, separated from the audience only by a thin black curtain. This VIP lounge was not accessible to regular ticket-holders. There always seemed to be a high volume of noise coming from this area, including the constant murmur of conversations, sharp bursts of loud laughter, and the constant clanking of dishes/silverware. It literally sounded like there was a full-service restaurant running back there. Most of this occurred in the middle of competition while skaters were on the ice. At a couple points, I heard the dropping of dishes on the floor and shattering of glass. I'm pretty sure the noise carried further than just my immediate area, because I saw several people sitting 5+ rows in front of me who turned around to check where the sounds of breaking glass and bursts of laughter were originating.

Food options were terrible. It's an arena and I wasn't expecting much. Most options were pre-packaged and barely edible. One of the few 'fresh' food items were the hot dogs, and they were absolutely terrible. Concessions were frequently overwhelmed, understaffed, and under-stocked. Equipment didn't always work. I had problems buying a can of beer w/ cash during the gala because the person running the stand 'couldn't log in' to their station. The arena was in the middle of nowhere, so leaving would require at least a car (as well as missing a portion of the event). Looked like hundreds of folks (especially Japanese) were being bused in every day and had nowhere to go.

Washrooms were poorly maintained and often gross. The lines (especially for ladies) were atrocious, and hadn't cleared even during the duration of an ice resurfacing.

The arena seating area itself was never cleaned over the course of the day. Trash and bottles accumulated all over the place beginning in the morning and were still there later that night.

Traffic was bad leaving on Friday night. Total gridlock in the area in and around the parking lot. Took me an hour to get out of it. Traffic was okay for the remaining nights.

I heard booing during the Free Dance session, but never at any other time over the weekend. At various times, I also heard the crying of an infant or the clicking of cameras. None of it seemed to be originating in my immediate section though. Quite honestly, I'd have preferred to sit closer to all the other sounds v.s. the noise of the party going on in the restricted lounge behind me all weekend.

I clocked a new personal record in Mississauga: I was in the arena on Saturday from 7 AM in the morning till midnight, without ever leaving!

I didn't hear the noise from the VIP lounge (sat in section 24) but I'm sure it must've been annoying.

I also saw several Japanese tour buses there, I'm sure those folks were stranded at the rink as there's nothing else to eat within decent walking distance. Would also echo the same thing about cleanliness, I remember sitting in different areas for practice and found in certain spots the ground was sticky (probably spilled beverages). There was even a little girl who got upset because she placed her earmuffs on a seat to save to watch practice and came back to find it had touched some gum that was placed, or on the seat from before.

The staff also asked us to scan in both morning and evening session tickets on Friday for some reason when I got to Friday practice, even though I told them I was planning to leave and come back in between. It forced me to scan out the evening ticket just to re-scan it in when I returned, that part really wasn't necessary and probably held up the line. I also made the unfortunate mistake of taking my ticket out in the parking lot on the windiest day and it completely blew out of my gripped fingers - luckily they issued a replacement since I was able to prove it was part of my all-event ticket.

I know they streamed the practices, but does anyone know if that footage is available now to watch?

I think I'm too honest (or chicken!) to do something like that! I'll have to meet up with you and follow your lead!

Well it's too bad that you missed this year as it was a great competition, but hopefully you'll have better luck next year and it will be even better! I haven't been to Nats, but I'm pretty sure all event tix are a lot more expensive than Skate America. Worlds are also a lot more expensive. I do think, though, that $1000 is on the high end for Nats - you can get a ticket package for 2017 "Championship Weekend" which includes both senior men's events and free skates for ladies, pairs and ice dance for prices ranging from USD $152 to 334 depending on where you sit. Since I would be most interested in those events, that actually seems quite reasonable to me!

A friend of mine was looking to buy SA tickets and asked me if I paid $500+ for them. I paid $125 for the all-event, 6th row from the ice in the end section (my preferred place to sit). We figured later that she probably accidentally ended up in a web site that was for a ticket broker, not for the actual SA web site. To me, when you count the practices, the actual competition, and the gala, it was a lot of entertainment for $125.

Thanks Tavi and Arriba627 for the info! I guess I ended up on a ticket broker's website too! The last two SA (Wisconsin & Chicago) were within driving distance for me!

I received a survey from the Hershey Centre about the event. I told them the event was excellent but the food choices were abysmal, the lineups too long for both food and washrooms and trying to get out of the parking lot was ridiculous on Friday night (they should have had someone directing traffic). They did try to remedy the women's washroom lineups by changing at least one of the men's washrooms to a women's but there were only 2 stalls so it didn't do too much to alleviate the lineups.

I didn't stay for the medal presentations for men and dance simply because I wanted to get out of the parking lot in a timely manner (30 minutes on Friday night, but only took 2 minutes on Saturday since I left "early"). I did hear a bit of booing just as Chock/Bates' marks came up but I'm not sure if it was because they won the free dance or because people thought their marks were too low. Only time I heard any booing and I found it very disappointing. I haven't been a big fan of Chock/Bates but I loved both their programs, especially the long and they deserved to win the free dance. I thought they had great energy and expression.

I only bought food on 2 days - a slice of pizza one day (didn't taste quite as much like cardboard as last time I had it!) and the chicken nuggets on another day. I snuck in my own muffins, fruit and almonds. On Sunday there was enough time between the practice and the gala to drive over to Subway so I didn't have to brave the lineups or the horrible food.

I would have been interested in looking at the Skate Canada merchandise boutique but their hours weren't great and there was always a crowd. I think they likely lost out on some sales for that reason. People were trying to buy items as they were setting up on Friday and they told people they weren't open yet.

I was in section 7 as well but I didn't hear the noise for the VIP section. Was it possibly from the boxes above?

I was VIP, in the front row, center at SA and paid $400.

I received a survey from the Hershey Centre about the event.

Was it an email survey? I wonder if they are just doing random surveys of the audience or everyone will get them.

Agreed on the food and the lines to the restrooms. I was able to buy a SC t-shirt on Saturday, no issues there. I snuck in most of my food, I even had an email printout from guest services in case someone questioned it, but I never needed it. I saw plenty of people who were eating food they brought in.

One bright spot was my seat was changed, I was supposed to be sitting higher up in my section, but they moved my tickets down to 7th row.

I agree it has an element of a risk.. :)
You need to have a cold blood and a nerve in certain situations.
Anyway, we found a place near the rink on the second half of the first day and it was ours for the rest of the entire thing. What's more, we had different neighbors every day! I suppose those neighbors assumed we were the true ticket holders of those seats, while certainly they were not! :)
