Figure Skating Anime

Well yes the inspiration of some characters, certainly. Yurio and Julia, Yuri and Machida, etc. regarding background, style, etc. Probably not stuff like personality though as least not directly.

They certainly based some of Yuri's personality and his skating style on Daisuke and they weren't even that subtle with it. *cough* glass-heart *cough*

Finding all of the references is actually the most fun part about Yuri on Ice to me. In every other regard it can't keep up with real life skating, even the drama is nothing in comparison.

If anyone remembers that whacky movie Blades of Glory, where the two guys skated as a pair, their main opponents/ villains were the brother and sister pair that was dodgy too. I couldn't help but remember that as well!

So crazy that she spent her lunch break watching the episode I COULDN'T WAIT ANY LONGER

Mission accomplished

That's exactly what my husband pointed out as well. "Are these supposed to be like Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg?"

And yes, he did remember the characters' names, he's weird like that

We did see him! The reigning japanese champion is the cute chicken nugget in ketchup Kenjirou Minami.

Kenjirou is not the champion. He was just a kid that also happened to beat Yuri at Nationals. If he were the champion he wouldn't had had to go through sectionals with him .

It says in his profile on the official website that he was " top place in the All Nippon Competition".

I'd rather to give priority to what the actual show states rather than what the geeky profiles done by other staff and prone to continuity errors. Like a previous poster stated, they made lots of emphasis on showing how Yuri was so bad last year that even a junior could beat him.

Thoughts on ep 9:

1. Sister...? They went full blown Protective and Clingy Big Brother Syndrome, didn't they. It was about to go into Angel Sanctuary teritory any moment.

2. JJ's song was the cachiest song on this show, omg, I wanted to sing along.

3. What about the -3 GOE for that axel, huh?

4. Whoa, Yurio's getting his own taste of crushing performance nerves. I loved how he couldn't "feel" agape because he was angry.

5. Yuri doesn't like it when Viktor's attention wanders away from him pefore performance, heh.

6. As a dog person, I totally understood Yuri's panic at the end.

7. Hahaha, stream troubles!

ETA:

9. I felt for Yurio when his grandpa couldn't come. His beat-up car kinda drive home that Yurio's from a poor family probably.

10. That thing with the dog dod't come out of the blue! Macchan was shown to salivate over the buns and, which had me laugh because it was such a typical dog thing to do.

11. Yuri shouting "Davai" and Victor "Ganbate" was so amusing. They're learning each other, lol, cuteness.

5. it reminded me so much of yuzu. he mentioned once how he was jealous/upset that everyone was applauding/all the attention was for javi while yuzu got onto the ice (javi had just performed). so he went for a quad to get the attention back on himself lol. (now that i think of it, im not sure if he actually said that or if fans just speculated that that was the case. im pretty sure he did mention that he wanted to bring the attention to himself before he was about to compete.)

9. i wonder if they'll bring up prize money. maybe theyll show that yurio uses it to pay medical bills or to support his grandfather/family. it would be quite a tearjerker ;~;

Huh. It'd didn't remind me of Yuzu at all. Actually, their reactions seem to be opposite, to me. Yuzuru wants the attention and admiration of the audience whereas for Yuri more important seems to be the attention of that one special person. Other people's attention doesn't seem to matter to Yuri nearly as much as Viktor's. It's been hammered again and again that it's Viktor watching him is what makes him skate better, what energizes and motivates him.

Nevermind, perhaps you are right...
:palmf:

Anyways, since we don't see other Japanese skaters on the podium, it means Team Japan is not as strong in the anime as in real life. Yuuri was the only Japanese man in the grand prix finals last year. Though, I'd like to believe Minami, as a rising star, did better than just beat Yuuri last year at nationals.;)

^would someone tell me who this person on the right is?

Edit: might want to mute your computer/phone before clicking.

Michal Brezina.

Lol, I knew it reminded it me of something and that was that Brzezina photo I saw in some "cutest Men at the Olympics" article. I thought it might have been Ivan Righini but it was Brezina.

ETA: thank for the warning about muting, that "crack" stuff is just annoying instead of funny.

yuri being from poor family is probably true in this case, however, I think this grandpa driving old car thing is a common phenomenon in Russia regardless of their wealth because I noticed that a lot of russian houses have this old, domestic car parked outside and also mostly elderly men driving them, and my parents who lived in Russia for long time explained that their old men simply likes their old cars and don't get rid of them partly because of their patriotic pride for their russian cars that aren't manufactured anymore. Yuri's granpa scene was probably reference for this culture, cause his parents probably drives relatively new Japanese cars lol

Wish I had known that beforehand, no idea why youtube recommended it to me, as the only videos I watched on youtube that are related to YOI were some of the songs...

CBC just posted this.... Canadian figure skaters as anime characters... they were talking about Yuri on ice...

This needs to be done for all the skaters now now now now now I want my Americans as anime characters, they would be so cute! And Team Australia!

Also they have a wrong answer in the quiz at the bottom :palmf:

that brother-sister relationship makes me so uncomfortable despite the bro saying that his love for her isn't physical, it feels just like one of those creepy old cultures where siblings get married :eww:
and that korean guy's costume is freaking hilarious it must be a shade towards Boyang Jin's horrid costumes lol
