2016-2017 State of U.S. Men Figure Skating

What a lively discussion, lol! Only skimmed through portions of it, but did someone say Max is getting a new program? That's news to me.

Yes, he will have a new "bullfighter" program at US Nationals. Tom Z posted some training clips and it looks very, very good already. I can hardly wait!

I sort of wish Krasnozhon were competing as a Senior at Nationals, just to see where he would end up against Zhou, Hiwatashi, Torgashev and all the other senior men...but it makes sense for him since he is a shoo-in for the Gold as a Junior.

He's smart to stay in Juniors. After getting a good look at Nathan's performance at the GPF, I can't imagine he'd even make the final flight in Seniors. I love Alexei but, Nathan, Adam, Max, Jason, Grant, and Ross, all have a quad planned and if they were to land them, I think they'd all finish ahead of him.

It'll be more interesting to see who USFS decides to send to JW. Alexei should be a shoo-in because he was the only one to go to JGPF, but Vincent and Tomoki have JW experience even if they struggled during the JGP this season. IMO, USFS should send Alexei (assuming he wins the junior title) and whichever junior-competing-at-senior-nationals places highest.

I thought of that recently as well...I think Alexei is safe because he was the only JGP finalist...Vincent is probably also safe since he was pretty close...I think the 3rd spot is between Tomoki and Andrew. Tomoki has the advantage since he has a world junior medal, but I think Torgashev has had a better season.

Vincent actually did well at his 2 JGP events. In Yokohama he was unlucky to be competing against Jun Hwan Cha, who set the Junior record at that event. In Tallinn he was leading after the SP but had a freakish fall in the LP which really shook him up and dropped him to 3rd. I'd still consider him the top US Junior except that he apparently injured himself at Golden Spin.

I don't follow junior men extremely closely, so does anyone know what's been going on with Tomoki that his season has been pretty bad? I was completely charmed by him at Nationals last year. Growth spurt maybe?

No insight, but he changed coaches from Ouriashev to Kori over the summer, and last season he really didn't come out great guns until Nationals. So we wait and see. Based on the season thus far, he's probably the one who has to demonstrate the most improvement from his early season in order to make the Junior World team. Personally, I think Vincent is the most likely to go, then Alexei, then Andrew, then Tomoki. But Tomoki can change that story if he comes out looking as solid as he did at Nationals last season. He earned the three spots. Andrew hasn't shown mastery over the triple axel or the quad. However, there is just as good a chance that Andrew will be the one that shows up looking as solid as Tomoki did last season. In which case the reverse scenario is true. And if Vincent or Alexei implode, they could leave the door wide open score-wise. Essentially, you don't want to be the guy with the fourth highest score of these four at Nationals, I think. Regardless of whether you're competing in the senior or junior event.

This is a positive development. A few years ago, USFS didn't use some of its JGP spots in men because there weren't enough skaters to go (or warranted a second event). The fact we have a tight race for three spots is really good.

Aside from those four, I thought Eric Sjoberg had a solid JGP result considering he was fresh from Novice.

After the Grand Prix final, I am now more excited than ever 4CC. Eight of ten of the top scoring men can compete there; Yuzuru, Patrick, Shoma, Nathan, Patrick, Boyang, Adam and Jason! It's like a pre-world's face off. Now the question is, other than everyone qualifying for 4CC, is Yuzuru going? He hasn't gone for four years. On the other hand his 4Lo is unpredictable and he falls on his 2nd 4S. I suppose will know after Japanese nationals.

As for Europeans. I guess I'll look forward to seeing Javi win again. Maybe he'll get his short clean finally.

I know Patrick is a great skater with amazing tricks but he does not have the magic to have a doppelgänger.

(Is there another top ten male skater that is also named Patrick that I am not aware of?)

Lol. That was an accident. I probably meant to write Dennis Ten.

No. But there are 8 of the top ten scoring men this season eligible to compete at 4CCs. Denis Ten has the 7th highest for the season.

ETA: Oops! Post was too slow, LOL.

No joke but way back in the day in Canada, Patrick competed against another Patrick Chan who was from BC I think. I remember there was video on youtube of the other Patrick Chan but I seriously for the life of me cannot find it right now.

Yuzu and Patrick probably won't compete though. (Well....since it's in South Korea, Yuzu will at least be nearby unless he's gone back to Canada...which he probably will have by then).

Top ice dance and pairs usually have competed in 4CCs, but that tends not to be the case in singles. 4CCs seems tailor-made to disadvantage non-European skaters considering location, travel, timing, and lack of prestige. ISU should seriously reconsider the timing of 4CCs.
