2017 Four Continents Men SP

Well looks like I'll be asleep when the SP starts. Looks like I'll wake up to results. At least I'm not sick this time unlike last year when I almost didn't care and that I have no classes this spring semester.

I wonder if I'll automatically wake up at some odd time in the morning to check results.

Oh wait, I just saw that Mark Webster is competing. That means we'll hear the Nokia 3310 ringtone SP! I seriously wonder what kind of commentary the B.ESP guys will have to say about that lol.

Yeah, I agree with this. 4CC is a good opportunity to experiment because it's more of a low-stress competition compared to Worlds. It's another chance to test out a layout/quad in front of an audience and get those kinks out. Boyang and Shoma are particularly vulnerable to this late addition of a 4Lo, more so than Nathan who has had good showings with his layouts in two competitions.

I expect splatfests, but I will continue to hope for relatively clean programs.
Yes... we can hope! :-D

I think Nathan has a "fair" or maybe even "good" chance of clean performances...
I don't really know what to expect from Boyang this season...

...and Uno is the most worrying for me - he has been looking like a wreck by the end of his free skates this season... and didn't he say recently that his success rate for 4L is only about 1 in 10?! If so, it just seems crazy to risk it (and risk injury - I worry that these young guys are adding too many quads, too soon - before they have built the strength, muscle and stamina that can protect them from injuries)

I hadn't actually seen this before. I don't even know whether to laugh or

I  when I saw this thread was so long because I worried I somehow missed the event!

But nope, just quad discussion.

Nathan seems most likely to skate clean. He's been doing this same layout all season. Hanyu, too.

I don't even know what Han Yan is doing, I love his skating, but my god, try landing your old layouts before throwing in more quads just because :drama:

Last I heard, B.ESP (or any Eurosport for that matter?) isn't planning on showing any 4CC :(.

I also concern about Han's new jump layout. Ever since his shocking drop-out from Worlds in Boston, his mojo is not coming back fully. He used to nail his beautiful 3A, but showed his struggling with it along with his 4T which has never been his reliable arsenal yet. I wonder whether he can really land his 4S at 4CC for the first time. (didn't check on his results at Nationals though) However quads are not everything for skating, so he has to deliver other elements together. Until he feels secure about himself, I think skating cleanly is more than important for Han, but...4CC could be a good place for skaters to explore new things.

I've been waiting for this comp since December. All I want is a great competition from the top men in the world. But now I think I'm going get another standard men's company with splats and pops. I still have faith that Nathan, Patrick, and Hanyu will put out decent programs.

In recent days, Brown has resumed training his quads, and plans to show his quad toe loop in Gangneung.
"It's definitely something I want to be doing at Four Continents," he said. "I have the mindset to do it. I want to go to Four Continents with a more difficult program than I had in Kansas City, one step closer to what I want to be putting out at worlds."
There's pressure on the 2015 U.S. champion to regain his prior form, and then some, by Helsinki. To earn three U.S. men's spots at the 2018 Olympics, he and Nathan Chen's placements must total no more than 13. Brown was fourth in the world in 2015, helping to qualify three spots for the following season, but younger contenders with multiple quads have emerged since then.

The men will battle with unprecedented firepower in Gangneung. Chen plans a repeat of the seven quads he hit in his two programs in Kansas City, where he won the U.S. title by more than 55 points by executing four different four-revolution jumps -- lutz, flip, toe and salchow -- and five total quads in his free skate. Grant Hochstein, fourth at the last two U.S. championships, hopes to hit three quad toes -- one in his short and two in his free -- at Four Continents.
Chinese press reports say Boyang Jin, the world bronze medalist, hopes to add a quad loop to his repertoire and equal Chen's five-quad free skate. After winning the Japanese title in December, Shoma Uno spent several weeks with Alex Ouriashev in the Chicago area, working to add a quad loop to his free skate, along with quad flip and toe.
In his first competition since winning the Grand Prix Final in December -- where he lost the free skate to Chen by 10 points -- Japan's Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu will bid to win his first Four Continents title with quad loop, quad toe and quad salchow in his programs. At age 26, three-time world and three-time Four Continents champion Patrick Chan has added a quad salchow to the quad toe already in his repertoire. In addition, Hanyu and Chan possess stronger program component scores (PCS) than their rivals.

Wow, I just look at this so differently (not the first time that's been said;) )

You can say you're going to add 80 gazillion quads to your program. You can even show us vids of pretty ones on the practice ice ... look, a quint axel! What great BV!:sarcasm::laugh:

But when I go whooooah, is when you *land* them in a program *during a comp*. And super whooooah, you need to land them in a comp where you have transitions, steps, and hopefully music that makes sense for those jumps, transitions and steps. Out of this world: add great spins.

But it does increase the page count, and that's impressive:agree:
