2017 Four Continents Men SP

PS... I blame Chan fans for at least 100 of the posts in this thread :) the funniest part is that we are not talking chiddy much if at all, just excited by the line-up :)

inflation!

hehe, sorry...you left that door wide open...

After seeing some skaters live, I am getting pickier... I did not like seeing skate skate skate to the end of the ice : JUMP... skate skate skate to the other end of the ice : JUMP...

it's so boring ;) looked almost like curling ;) (which I like btw) ... just from the feeling of skating from one end to the other...

We will see though...

I don't like seeing it on video either.

3 is not enough.... when so many do 4 and now 5...

But 3 landed is better than 4 or 5 not landed... we will see.

What I would like to see happen is that judges DEDUCT PCS scores IF (not saying it will happen here) programs are diluted to allow so many quads...

The video on 4CC Men skating without the elements is very telling. When Chan comes on, it is such a contrast. Just on footwork, Chan, Hanyu and Uno are fast and their choreo is non stop before and right after the jumps. Uno, however, bends down to generate speed. D10 is quite elegant but he does take time for set up compared to these three. I definitely see Chan and Hanyu as best skaters. And then of course there are preferences re other components between them.

Patrick can't go to grad school or do an MBA because he doesn't have an undergraduate degree. Post-secondary education in North America is quite demanding and can be challenging to do if you are winning World Championships and Olympic medals. I think Paul Poirier is the only Canadian National team member who has an undegrad degree.

I love the diversity of the programs we're going to see. Beatles, Prince, Nokia ring tone...

yes... that video is telling... that's why I posted it... I wonder how many people watched it. It is very clear how some skaters skate, including the jumps and spins in the program, while others jump and spin and include skating in their program.

See you at the podium.

I guess I'm making up for not paying any attention to most threads. And I haven't talked about page count, until now. :)

I just watched a run of Jason's SP on YouTube. No quad but he sure does look good. I imagine he'll do quite well when it comes to his PCS mark. It's just too bad he doesn't a quad. Other than his spectacular flexibility, everything that Jason does, Patrick and Hanyu can do as well. However, when you add the TES mark. Jason unfortunately, is not match for other top Men.

And few skaters can afford both the training and the education. Higher education can wait but training and competing can't.

The Japanese skaters are lucky to have salaries from sponsors.

LOL me neither or at least not as a main topic, just posts count :) LOL.. because I thought I had contributed a bit too much perhaps :) hahaha and then I saw you up there too.... we are just passionate fans of skating... that's all

That's because the ISU uses logarithmic scale to score PCS. :whack:

Like the earthquake Richter scale or the long term stock chart, the highest values are squashed to be a tiny fraction of their true values relative to those at the lower levels. Thus a true difference of over 5 points in PCS may be shown only as 0.1 to 0.2 depending how high it is above 90. An equivalence of a quad in skating skills is given about 0.1 point above the equivalence of a triple jump.

If you really think about it PCS is not even marked out of 10. It sort of works like GOEs, and actually work within an EVEN narrower threshold.

GOEs is suppose to go from -3 to +3, scale of 6 with mandatory deductions and guidelines. Where as PCS at elite level rarely makes a difference between 8 to 10. That is like +1 to -1 difference, due to difference of 2 separate them, which is surely wholly inadaquate?? For skaters who made a mess of things, it rarely result in deduction too.

It is literally pointless to compete in PCS if the judges can't make full range of the parameter between 1 to 10 instead of 8 to 10 at elite level. PCS at the top, is just another 1x element, infact let's just call it element 15. :drama:

Page 36 Yiipeee... i wonder if we will see a part 1 and part 2 thread lol, that would make it bigger than previous WC.

I really like the men's music choices, also the ones with vocals - which I'm usually not a fan of.
Dear Prudence is amongst my top favourites Beatles songs, so it's always nice to hear that. And it goes very well together with Blackbird (although I think Patrick interprets the Blackbird part better than the first half of the program. Maybe because he is focused more on the technical elements in the first half.).
Beatles, Prince, only Pink Floyd is missing this season?

I'm sorry, completely OT, but can't resist, and it reminds me ....

When a trial attorney says "With all due respect, Your Honor", what he means "You don't know what you're talking about, Your Honor" ...but it needs to be said nicely. Practical legalese

I can't believe what one lawyer told me she did when she was frustrated with the Court - rubbing her nose with a certain finger....now she is a judge herself :) I kind of think my work as like a figure skating performance there are spins, footwork and jumps so to speak. You try to make it look pretty and you just hope you fully rotate and land those jumps/ things you are trying to prove in the court room.

In light of the quads in the sp does that mean Patrick has to skate clean and hope someone makes an error? Realistically does he even have a chance overall?

I'd think that would be a pretty irrevocable truth to everyone who watched that video (and actually, also before ;) ). They have speed and edges, but also a lot of other stuff that's impressive and listed for PCS: one foot skating, difficult turns (chained together at that), varying of direction & speed... and all of that with cohesive programs with great flow throughout. Definitely the 2 best ones here.
But I'd also list Jason as someone who has great overall quality - he's quite well rounded to me, with good speed, flow & edges, and some nice intricate turns (although everything not quite on the same level as the above 2). Shoma & DTen have really good edges and speed too, but both IMO aren't on the same level when it comes to 'in-betweens' - there are less difficult steps and all that jazz. So they're good, but also not on Yuzu/Pat level.
Hanee could be so great, with those gorgeous skating skills of his... :sad21:

Patrick is not hoping on others to make mistakes.
Patrick knows his BV is lower but he is only able to control what he does.
Patrick is HOPING to skate well.

That is all... results aren't always measured in ranking.

And of course Patrick has a CHANce....

A shot at what? Making the LP? I'd think probably yes.

Seriously: clean he'll be around 100, the only people potentially beating that are Yuzu, Shoma, Nathan and maybe Boyang. He has a good shot at the podium IMO.

Hah this thread is epic! Maybe it needs to be retitled to the pre-Men's competition and then the *actual* SP thread.

The amount of quads is astonishing. Like, wow, now a 3-quad FS is a minimum to have a shot of winning.

I go through phases of what I like in figure skating. Right now, I'm in the mood for muscular, physical, technically wow programs. I'm not in the mood to ooh-aah over someone's layback.

Boys, you better bring the BAM!

Next week, maybe I'll obsess about sit spin positions. It cycles.

Has Uno gone back to his SP from last year? saw a video on Insta of practice and noticed the outfit change. Sorry if already discussed/ disclosed!
