2017 Four Continents Men SP

I still can't comprehend what happened to Han Yan 3A's. It used to be his money jump. Like +2 GOE, all across the board. And it's still big. but landings are not perfect anymore....

his 3A decided to run away with Michal's 3A :slink:

perhaps but if skating skills are not rewarded properly, it sends a message about what matters most. Is that the sport we want to watch in the future?

The sports goes through its phases. I think the toughest competitors will endure through those different phases. Patrick has seen the sport at different phases and did what he can to compete. That's all you can do.

I was gutted for him and you bud, after the combo. Patrick can probably do it in his sleep, it has been so consistent this season. I have no doubt that he will come back in the LP.

Keep fighting that good fight my friend, as I have on the women side. Respect!

Fell asleep during the mens sp. Just catching up. I am curious because I just watched Jasons sp on British Eurosport and they said that the US mens world team hasn't been decided yet? That they will decide based on the results of 4cc? I thought they already picked the mens world team.

:points: Sad that you and your funny dog doesn't want to do it...

I could let him do it but it would be a lot of "Turn off your music. ARG." "Why are you wearing something that looks like a stuffed animal? Are you trying to trigger me? " " If I could jump high enough to get over a 10foot fence when I was your age why can't you get your triples off the ground?"

Eli the German Shepherd would be constantly asking about what you are eating and if you are going to eat all of it or not.

I can't even tell you what he would think about Hanyu's flying poohs. He'd probably go through the screen to try and get them.

They definitely picked the team. It's not the first time Eurosport (as great as their commentary is) got something wrong.

How in the world did Nathan's 4F GOE range from -1 to +2?!

Maybe it has something to do with the judges who read the 'steps before solo jump' rule vs those who didn't? GOE range is really strange to me. There's been like solo 1s mixed in with 2s and 3s in other places that also confuse me.

I finally watched the full broadcast this morning after a good nights rest!

Slaythan!!!! I had been telling my family I thought he would win the short! I was neevous because my favorites seem to always have issues! His ending stumble was hilarious, it reminded me of his LP sumble at nationals too funny. I love he balletic quality of this program, it was such a good direction to take him in this season.

Grant was fantastic to watch as was Misha and Brendan!

I told my family purple seemed to be a japanese trend this year. I am not a huge fan of Yuzuru's short this season, I do think he did fantastic with it at the Gran Prix final. Here he did well but for me it was missing his normal spark. His long program is my favorte program for any man this season so I can't wait to watch it tomorrow!

Shoma did so well, I can't wait to see what he does tomorrow as well, the strides he's made this season are fantastic!

I haven't seen Boyang all season, the spider-man program was such a good choice for him so fun!

Patrick made me sad, but I do trust that he will come back strong in the long, same goes for Jason.

This event has been so fun so far! I really wishes I could have stayed up with all of you last night to watch. This thread has dominated the competition threads. I can't wait for the long!

Han Yan has one of the best ss but is not rewarded accordingly. He lost some weight I think, which makes it harder to control his landing. He should perhaps adjust to his take off to a smaller scale to be secure. Height or distance of a jump is not as important as the cleanness of a jump. But overall men are not as consistent as ladies, either consistently good or consistently bad in jump qualities.

GOEs come from evaluation against criteria that yield an increase in GOE and some that result in lower GOE. So if there are more plus points than minus, you get positive GOE. If they're the same, you get 0. If there's more bad than good, or there is a clear jump problem (hand down, step out, fall, etc.) then you get negative. Some of the differences we see in GOE are the result of judges not seeing everything. Some judges fail to apply rules correctly. Some are more lenient than others.

So basically it's almost as subjective as PCS.

You know the judge and tech caller mentioned in this thread, Mr. Prins, once explained that the cameras used in the venue to look at elements are different from the ones we have for broadcast. So it could be they miss some things. But yeah, GOE can be subjective too.

I hate to be one of those Nathan Chen bandwagonners, but my god. I love this kid. I hope his Olympic-season LP is ballet-inspired. He pulls off the balletic movements and sensibility (from my limited knowledge of ballet) better than any man of this era, and he makes it look effortless. When Mama Chen had him doing ballet and figure skating, she knew what she was doing. His footwork sequence is to die for.

Shoma has magnificent skating and his knees are the best of the current men. Program felt empty. He brings a very welcome intensity to his interpretation, but the choreography/transitions are just really not there for me. Spins are better than Nathan's. Much better 3A as well. But I really hate this program - there's nothing to it, it does nothing for me, it's generic. If he didn't bring such good intensity it would be awful, but because he's so good, it's just bland. I liked him more last season when he wasn't tackling such difficult content and his programs were of much higher quality.

Boyang's program is fun . But he doesn't have enough fun with it or bring enough personality at the beginning. It's only after that combo is out of the way that he gets super into it. Obviously he botched the combo (the 4Lz was HUUUUUGE), 3A was nice (better than Shoma's or Nathan's), 4T was nice. Spins look weaker than last season (about on par with Nathan now), skating looks stronger (though still weaker than Nathan or Shoma).

Of these 3, Shoma has the strongest LP in terms of artistry, though I won't be surprised if it's watered down some choreographically since he is upping the technical content. Nathan could end up outshining both Shoma and Boyang in terms of artistry, since (one assumes) his choreography/interpretation will have improved since Nationals, whereas both Shoma and Boyang are upping the technical game and so their second mark may suffer (one assumes).

I'm just really interested in these three since they're of the same skating generation. Patrick and Hanyu are in leagues of their own in some ways and can't really be compared to the youngins.

And my darling Han Yan - always given garbage programs, best skating skills in the world besides Yuzu and Patrick - lands all his jumps for the first time in a long time and biffs up a spin. :drama:

I'm so much more into presentation than I am the athletic jumping beans. Thought Nathan did extremely well - as he has both - but was completely turned off with Hanyu. I hate his costume, I hate the music, and I'm even hating his greasy hair. Poor choice of all of it - he's so much better than that. I thought Grant did an outstanding job and I'm happy to see him get some recognition. Misha skated well. Some of his jumps are very good but I don't see him as a contender at Worlds. Han Yan will self-implode like he always does and it's a shame because I really like his program and he interprets it so well. I wonder where Jason would have ended up had he not fallen on that 3A. All things considered, still in the top 10. And Patrick. My heart breaks for him. He is the smoothest, most graceful man on the ice and when he's on his jumps are magical. He embodies what I love about men's figure skating. Boyang Jin is just all jumps although it did seem like he was having fun out there. I just don't find him very pleasing to watch. Shoma Uno is still always going to be in the mix.

The freeskate ought to be very interesting. I'm betting on Nathan Chen to take it all.

Nathan Chen has emerged as a major threat to Yuzuru Hanyu. Chen is better at quadruple jumps than Hanyu and he could beat Hanyu at the World championships. Nathan Chen used to be inconsistent but his quadruple jumps are much more stable than before as his skills have significantly improved in the second half of this season.

I wonder where Jason would have ended up had he not fallen on that 3A. .

He lost -3.2 in GOE and 2.4 in BV (due to UR 3Z) = 5.6 points.
Adding that to his TES score (assuming 0 GOE for 3Z or 3A) = 43.97
+ 43.00 PCS he got

86.97, which would have put him in 6th, right between Patrick and Han Yan.

He might have gotten a higher score if clean cause he would have likely got additional PCS/GOE. But alas, this game assume everyone else's performance would have been the same....which obviously isn't always the case.

Someone gave Patrick Chan 8.75 in SS! No, wait two people!

PATRICK!

And then I saw the 9.00! That person gave 9.00 to Yuzuru too. I cannot. CANNOT

yes, saw that. outrageous. patrick's must never, nay, CAN NEVER be less than 9.50. should be 9.75-10 every time if the judges at least pretended to be fair. ding him when he pops jumps and falls but don't underscore him in pcs. seriously. it's unprofessional.
