If someone told me that I would love a program by a 6 ft tall, 18-year old man to Mary Poppins, I would have thought they were crazy. But I DO. He really sells it, without being too juvenile or cheesy or over the top.

However, when skated to the brilliance that is Shae-Lynn Bourne, be prepared to have expectations surpassed. As in both Nic's Mary Poppins and Elvis program this year; just remarkable in terms of choreography.

Clearly he's French Canadian. Good Ol' Mary Poppins........He's a great skater and a wonderful performer. I will definitely be keeping an eye on him at Junior Worlds. Thank you for posting that link.

As mentioned earlier, Olivia Gran won the silver medal in the junior ladies competition at The Challenge Cup. She was first in the FS. Beresford Clements and Aleksa Rakic finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in advanced novice men. Clements lost entirely on PCS (his total TES was highest). Larkyn Austman will be competing in the senior ladies FS tomorrow. She is less than a point back of third.

I'm not surprised BC/YK is sending out skaters. I think Ted Barton sees every single JGP competitor at every single JGP event. If after seeing all those athletes he doesn't push for his own skaters to get out there and compete then I am not sure what to say. I think the success of Skate Ontario's pilot last season with CdP helped lead to all this.

20 gold, 17 silvers, 16 bronze = 53 medals in total

3 of these medals have come from advanced novice men...a full set, actually. The babies of Skate Canada are also delivering.

I watched the last 2 flights of the Junior Ladies and all of the Junior men, and recorded the scores as they came up.

I won't be able to do that for Sunday's results as the competitions take place in the early am hours. But I expect all will be posted for the Seniors fairly early on.

Larkyn skated 1st, which is always tough, esp. for an unknown. Still, she ended up in the top flight for the LP (currently in 4th). The field is close for 2/3/4 place at the moment. She could move up if she skates like she did at Canadians, in her LP.

Well add another medal, Mango...Larkyn won the bronze! She also got the worlds TES minimums in both programs landing, a triple lutz with positive GOE in the free! She didn't attempt a lutz at nationals. Way to go Larkyn! Bonus that they even spelled her name right, this time

Great to see that Larkyn will go into the season with the TES minimum for next season! It really sets the stage for a good launch at the senior Bs next fall.

And given all of the discussion we've had on this thread on the need for Canadian skaters to get more and earlier international experience, it's good to see that Skate Canada as well as Ontario and BC/YK sections showing action on this.

It's not enough to have a Long Term Athlete Development Model [LTAD] that says intense competition experience is necessary at just below the elite level. It needs to be resourced as essential part of the talent development plan. Hope that other sections will join the trend and put their skaters at post-nationals international events next season.

But experience isn't the only benefit. I'd also like think that, with earlier international judging feedback, perhaps coaches, skaters [and the families that fund them], will take a long hard think about the results they have and what needs to change now.

Sometimes I wonder if certain coaches tell parents and themselves to ignore some of the domestic coaching feedback, or even Skate Canada talent management guidance.

I really wonder if some of those coaches are so caught in either a belief that 'I know what's best to get them to elite level' regardless of the domestic feedback, or are so focused on getting them to the level of international competition that they don't really think about the long run game.

Or, on the other hand, some skaters really are valued higher in Canada due to particular Canadian notions about what is excellence, and the skaters and their coaches need to see early that it just won't be enough for international success.

Well, His Parents are Italian but when I met him, he lived in Montreal, he sounded very French, had a big hair, and called me keeton instead of Quintin.....Here's his Bio....

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Vannelli is one of three sons (Joe, Gino, and Ross)[1] born to Russ and Delia Vannelli. Russ, his father, was a big band musician. As a child, Gino's greatest passion was music, and he began playing percussion at an early age. By the age of 15, Vannelli began writing songs. Just out of high school, he signed his first recording contract with RCA under the pseudonym Vann Elli, but went on to study music at McGill University.

I don't know if this is the best place to post this but I've been musing on Nic Nadeau's Elvis FS since I first saw it. He completely impressed me, so much in fact it actually made my relationship with Javi's FS a little less enthusiastic, due to how different their interpretations are (Nic's a lot more Elvis-ish in his swagger?). I'm looking forward to seeing more of this guy. Has he or will he participate in any other competitions this year? Will he be at Junior Worlds?

Yes, this is a good place for discussion of all Canadian skaters and Canadian skating from pre-juvenile on up, past and present.....[according to Mango's OP].

Nic certainly also has a Fan Fest that you might like to drop into, but analysis is very appreciated here.... Would love to hear more about what you think!

And in response to your question, yes he has the assignment from Skate Canada for Junior Worlds even though he has been skating as a senior within Canada this season.

While I believe there has been a recent change in Skate Canada policy, until this year, skaters who won the title at one level were automatically required to move up to the next level in domestic competitions. This has been a bit of a problem for some when there are restrictions in allowed elements in the level at which they compete internationally. Having an international vs. domestic SP or FS that are very different can make for poorer results in one or the other. We have for example some super young Canadian pairs teams who compete as juniors domestically, but don't compete internationally at all because the ISU Advanced Novice limits on pairs are extreme.

Nic got a silver at the ISU 2016 Junior Worlds. We're hoping to see his 4Lo ratified at an international competition.

well... i cannot say much about gino... a bit before my time... so for those who think i am so old because i don't know shawn mendes.... :roll5:

In Montreal, most of the Italians raise their children in English.... believe it or not, English seems easier for them to learn than French.

So Gino would be bilingual in both Italian and English, if his parents followed the traditional model.... He would have picked up French as well as a third language, like most Italians do but many of them speak it with various accents....

Now regarding your name.. mrrice.... if I were to pronounce it how it's written in French, it wouldn't sound like keeton.... nor quintin... it's a very rare name in French.

The translation is Quentin and is almost never used.... in fact i have only seen a few children from France with this name... never in Canada.

I think a francophone would have a hard time with your name.... QUIN- would sound like very nasal... a sound you don't have in English KIN - TIN (same nasal vowel sound)

The vowel sound is close to the AN in CANE but the N is dry... no NNNNN

So in French the KW sound is totally lost as QU is just K not KW.

in any case, we may need to rename you Queen-Teen if you bring up shawn mendes and the likes

when I wrote KIN-TIN... i meant it to be pronounced in French... the I is not an EE so it's more like CANE (but no NE wet sound...) TANE (same, no NE sound).. the vowel sound we have in French for this doesn't quite transfer to English

haha he does have an accent.... typical of the Italian Montreal families that's what I would say... I don't hear French in his speech at all.. (just watched a couple interviews)... In any case... thanks Quintin for making me time travel to times I never knew finding out this montreal guy sold 10 Million albums is something... I have sold about 20
