2017 Jr Worlds Ladies FS

Alina won't grow until the Olympics, she'll stay exactly as she is now. She probably has to live on protein shakes for a year but she can eat all she wants afterwards. *sarcastic*
Her mother is a petite person, they're almost the same height. I doubt that Alina will grow too much. Of course we can never tell.

People keep saying that Alina is a sure thing to make the Olympic team next season but she has a lot of growing to do in the next couple years and those jumps might disappear for all we know. That's why i think it should be 16 and up for Worlds and the Olympics. Let these girls prove they can still jumps when they aren't stick figures anymore and have some maturity.

I think she looks more mature at 14 than Evgenia at 17. But who knows. I still think Evgenia has the upper hand, but we'll never know. To see someone dominate the Ladies like that, is kind of scary.

So when are we going to discuss what happened with Polina? Today felt like watching Gracie at US national, wondering what the heck happens here. Is she injured? Did something happen?

I actually followed her. She was injured multiple times since last season after she withdrew from junior worlds. As someone who follow her season, I am not surprised at all by this result. She was clean all season long last season, aside of YOG I think. This season, aside of JGP Estonia, she would make mistakes either in the short or in the free. Though the multiple mistakes she made here is very uncharacteristic. Having a less than stellar season after an amazing one might finally get her to do those skates here, who knows. Quite a shame. She grew a lot too. It clearly affected her jumps' consistency.

I would be nice to have a skater that can actually compete for medals after such a long time. Tanja Szewchenko is the last skater I remember who medalled. Over 20 years ago. Then maybe the sport would have some more exposure besides the pairs competition.
Lea has very good chances of keeping her jumps, she's already nearly 17, she's tall and apart from the ! she got her technique seems to be sound. So she just has to work on everything else, but that's something to build on. And she seems to enjoy herself, that's really the most important thing!

Maybe Alina will be the one to challenge Zhenya's dominance. She has the TES for it. But probably not the PCS for a while.

Great competition! EPIC final group!

Marin broke 200 at last, with a beautiful performance and smashed her previous PB.
She gave her best, and she can be proud.

Zagitova held her nerve for an indisputable win, and improved her World Records. She will be a big threat to top seniors if she can keep what she has now, as she grows... but add more refinement, finesse, and emotion to her skating.

Kaori also held her nerve, another great performance and also smashed her previous PB... well deserved place on the podium.

Eun Soo Lim gave a great performance too. Not perfect, but nothing that would have changed the result so she need not have any regrets. She has made dramatic improvements since the beginning of the season... transitions are better now... more convincing performances with way better projection, expression, fire and commitment... added to her big solid jumps and good spins. Next season, if she brings deeper edges, a few more difficult and varied transitions, and less two footed skating... she will surely be a force to be reckoned with! I will not be surprised to see her on the podiums in JGP events, JGPF and Worlds.

Next Japanese and Russian nationals will be a bloodbath... fighting for Olympic places...

I just realized that Korea lost a great shot to get three slots. Poor So Hyun an got 20th place.

Even if she does, her jumps are big and her technique looks good - so I doubt growing 1 cm will magically make all her jumps turn into twizzles.

And maybe it's just me, but Alina looks far from a stick figure to me :scratch2:

After Julia, I promised myself not to get attatched to another junior Russian skater unless I knew their technique would hold after puberty. Polina was that exception. Now I'm heartbroken all over again. I hope she gets her mojo back, because she is an outstanding skater and I want to see more of her.

And they could have used it so well. I'm already dreading the fact that one of Eunsoo, Ye-Lim and Young won't be at JWC :sad21:

Judge 6 gave Alina's 3Lz-3Lo a 0... were they high????

Edit: Judge 6 also really liked Marin.

Nothing because Zhenya is not nearly as awful as GS likes to think so. She is still by miles ahead of Alina in the components and she is far from stagnant either.

For everyone else, depends how fast Zagi can develop.

I actually think Alina is (at this moment) better than Evgenia because Alina 1) does a +3Lo combo, 2) has better flow in her jumps, solo or combo, 3) has a more gentle and smoother skating, 4) has better choreography and musicality and 5) more beautiful tano/Rippon which she did not abuse. So I really don't see how Evgenia is "miles ahead" of Alina

Thank you Frida :)

I know a lot of talented intermediates and novices as well. The one I'm looking at closely is Emily Zhang, an intermediate who has all her jumps including a 3S 1/2 3S when most girls have only two triples at that level. Trust me, change is coming.

Kaitlyn is very talented, she learns fast and isn't afraid to do challenge herself. Don't worry.

Yeah, Alina jumps better than Zehnia at the same age. I still remember when I complained that Zhenia's jumps barely cross the ice when she was 14-15. But look at her now. Somehow Zehnia has improved her jumps despite growing a bit.
Compared to Zehnia, Alina at least has a true lutz. She has ok spring in her jumps. We shall see if she will do well in Olympic season.

Disagree. Some skaters body change after 16, some change at the age of 13/14 (Look at Marin, her hips already stick out comparing to when she was 12). Some skaters body does not even change much despite puberty. 15 is alright. I am actually sad that many of these 15 years old deserve more to be on the senior field because their quality is better than many senior skaters out there, but their age kept them from doing so
I disagree. I think it's very tough for those young skaters to put in all the time and effort only to probably lose their jumps during puberty. If they win medals before that everything is fine of course, but how many are pushed, think that they really have the chance only to have their dreams shattered? The problem is that the girls jump best pre-puberty and before they finish puberty. I watched a documentary lately about rhythmic gymnasts in the GDR who were malnourished and said that they had their first menses at 18! Some of those girls are in the hands of tough coaches, doctors and parents and I would wish that more would be done to protect them.
I would change the age eligibility to 17 or probably 18 for seniors.
